Was trolling
fandom_memes, found this, and decided to give it a go:
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.
I chose Victor/Alice, natch -- to make it a bit easier on myself, I used the playlist I made for them on Windows Media Player. Let me tell you, it's hard to write any sort of coherent narrative in some of the time frames you're given! So yeah, what's coming up is not exactly my best work.
1. Knees of my Bees
Alice had never intended to fall in love with the shy, pale young man who had come before her to the Inkwell Bar. But after spending some time with him, she realized that not only did they have quite a few things in common, he was also sweet, kind, intelligent, and – frankly, rather handsome. And the way he looked at her sometimes, those warm brown eyes, that shy little smile. . . . She’d never met anyone else, ever, who could make her feel weak in the knees like that.
2. What Would Happen
Victor could practically see the sparks flying between their skin as they revolved slowly on the dance floor. He couldn’t understand why he felt like this. Alice, while admittedly a rather beautiful girl with a wonderful personality, was just his friend. He couldn’t fall in love with her. Besides, she was the niece of his father’s solicitor. His parents would never approve of the match. They wanted him to marry up. He wasn’t allowed to fall in love with her.
And yet. . .he couldn’t stop staring at her. Her green eyes, sparkling in the light of the lamps. . .her long auburn hair, flowing out behind her in waves. . .and those lips, soft, pink, and – and –
What would happen if they kissed? Would she pull herself out of his grasp and run away? Would she turn indignant and slap him? Or would she – would she return his affections?
There was only one way to find out. But Victor doubted he was brave enough to try it. And he doubted Alice would ever attempt it either.
3. You Owe Me Nothing In Return
Victor had always expected love to come with a price tag. One could attribute it to living with Nell Van Dort all these years – “if you’re consistently well-mannered, maybe I’ll notice you,” “if you learn piano, maybe I’ll be proud of you,” “if you’re the perfect son, maybe I’ll love you.” He always knew that you never got something for nothing. So when Alice told him she loved him, he couldn’t help but wonder what he would have to do to keep that love. He was terrified of losing it, terrified of losing her. And when they had their first fight, he was certain that was it – she didn’t love him anymore.
Until she showed up at his door the next day, apologizing and wanting to work things out. And Victor was confused – he hadn’t had a chance to beg, to change, to earn back her love. And when he’d blurted this out, Alice had looked at him funny and said, “Victor, I love you. I don’t need you to do anything to earn it back.”
And that’s when he realized that unconditional, true love really was real.
4. My Heart Goes Bang
Alice ran down the pathway, blade at the ready, eyes narrowed. Cheshire had just given her the report that some of the Jabberspawn had ventured out of the Tulgey Wood, and she intended to chase them back in. She wasn’t about to let some other innocent Wonderlander get menaced by –
She stopped dead as she crested the hill. The scene before her – there were three Jabberspawn there, two green and a red, steam hissing from the vents on their heads. And they had a figure cornered. A rather familiar figure. Chester!
Rage bubbled up in Alice. How dare they – how dare they attack her son?! She practically flew down the side of the hill, launching her knife with deadly accuracy at the nearest beast as she summoned up the Jabberwock’s Eye Staff for more firepower. “Chester, get down low!” she yelled, gripping it tightly and charging it with her will.
Chester dropped to the dirt, curling up into a ball. The Jabberspawn, sensing that the greater threat was coming up on them fast from the left, promptly turned toward Alice and sprang. Alice barely had time to let loose a stream of powerful energy before one knocked her down. Large teeth went for her throat –
And suddenly, they were gone, along with the rest of the head. Alice blinked, then turned her head to see her husband Victor, sitting on the ground, smoking blunderbuss in his hands.
5. Hey Pretty
Victor had no idea what to expect when Alice pulled him through the mirror. What did you expect when you walked through a seemingly-ordinary household object? Besides getting cut rather badly.
Instead, he got a field checked like a chessboard, and living chess pieces waging war all around him. He got a castle made solely of white marble, and creatures like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle. He got to meet characters who had charmed him for years, and others who had frightened him immensely.
And he got to see the darkness inside himself, let it run rampant through him – and then defeat it. Just as Alice had done.
And now – he got to become the co-ruler of the greatest land on earth – or any world.
6. Happy Birthday
“S-stop – stop--”
“Stop what?” the Heart Guard mocked. Alice glared at him from her position on the wall, wishing she could go over there and wipe the smile off his face. Damn these straps! Why did she have to risk taking tea with the Hatter again?
“Stop – stop--”
“Is that all you can say? You sound like a broken record, or a particularly dull parrot. Which only suits you. You look like a White chess piece, and we all know they’re utter trash compared to the power of Red.”
Alice struggled mightily against her bonds. How dare he, how dare he? Couldn’t he see how upset Victor was? Of course he could, that’s why he was doing it. If only she was free, if only she had her knife –
“Stop – stop – stop laughing at me!”
The fork jerked upward. Three sharp tines ripped through the guard’s throat, sending blood spraying everywhere. Alice froze, staring as the blood coated Victor’s body, and the guard fell. What the –
Then Victor turned to her. And smiled.
And Alice knew all was lost.
7. You’re So True
That was what was best about their relationship, Victor decided one day. They were both strange. Alice was the overly imaginative, wild young woman, while he was the too quiet, repressed young gentleman. She loved climbing trees and cats that talked; he loved watching the rain and chasing butterflies. She was outspoken, he was shy; she was bold, he was cautious. Neither of them had many friends in the real world because of those traits Neither of them was the person society expected them to be.
But then, if they had been, they probably wouldn’t have fallen in love.
8. To Die For
Was a life in Wonderland really the best life for anyone? Especially someone like Victor?
Alice wondered this in her darker moments. She worried for her love a lot of the time. After all, his first trip here had ended with him being possessed by the King of Hearts and nearly losing his sanity. Now he was living here, with one of the maddest residents. And he intended to go on living here. He seemed to like it, but – was it really healthy? Alice loved Wonderland, but she knew the place lived off madness – insanity. She could handle it – she’d never been truly sane, not in the way most people were. And she’d managed to conquer the bad, warping insanity that had threatened to destroy both her and Wonderland once. But Victor – Victor had been perfectly normal before she’d met him. Did he have the ability to survive Wonderland, with all its strangeness? Wouldn’t it be kinder to pretend she didn’t love him, send him home so he could have a normal life?
But the very thought of sending him away – forcing him away – made her stomach turn. She loved him so much, it almost hurt sometimes. He brought out the best parts of her, made her happy in a way she hadn’t been since – since her parents died.
She was the strongest person in Wonderland. But – she wasn’t strong enough to do that.
9. Could’ve Gone Mad
Perhaps it was silly, but Alice felt she could credit Victor with helping to keep her sane. Before he’d come into her life, she thought she could handle her worries, her fears, everything that threatened to drag her back down into the darkness on her own. It would be a hard job, but she was determined to see it through. She’d done it once before, hadn’t she? She could do it again.
But then, Victor came along. And when he joined her in Wonderland, Alice realized how much easier all of that was when you had someone who loved you there. She could confide in him her deepest, darkest secrets, and he wouldn’t judge her. He’d comfort her, hold her, and help her fight off the darkness, the fears. And when it came to the physical manifestations – well, he wasn’t the best fighter, but he was tenacious. When it came to the ones he loved, he would never stop. He felled one Jabberspawn just by sheer determination alone. And when it came to the Queen of Hearts – He’d risked everything to save her then. He was the best fighting partner one could hope for. And Alice counted herself one of the luckiest girls on the earth that she’d managed to snag him as her partner.
10. So Unsexy
It was the little rejections that hurt the most. The people who turned up their noses when he passed them in the street. The way his mother always gave him that look before they went anywhere. The way he’d see his father sometimes shake his head with a sigh when he tripped or did something else foolish. It made him feel – worthless. Someone who should just go away and never bother anyone again.
But whenever he told Alice that, she told him not to be silly – he wasn’t worthless, he was wonderful and interesting and intelligent. And she’d hug him and tell him she’d never do that to him, and the people who did weren’t worth thinking about.
It took him some time to believe her on that score. But, eventually, he did.
Bonus points if you can guess the artist for each song. ;)
Oh! I also have a new YouTube video up -- The Sunlit Collection, where you can actually SEE a bit more of my stuff. Amazing, huh? I'm really sorry the previous videos turned out so dark -- hopefully this will rectify it a little.
