They were bad CGI even for their time period, which is... painful to look at, really. And the cuts weren't good either. Whoever did the editing was shit at their job, so the bumpers sometimes cut off a hair of the preceeding or following scenes. I've only watched a couple G2'd eps, so can't really be sure that was true for all of them, but it was enough to put me off ever trying to find out.

Starscream is often extremely whiny. I think that's what got him the fandom nickname "screampuff". It's not because he isn't dangerous.

Name change probably for copyright reasons. And... I could kind of wish they didn't go there, because while it almost sounds interesting, it also sounds like they reused the idea One Too Many Times. I can give it a bit of leeway tho because, lets face it, humans trying to get involved in battles involving much stronger robots tend to result in the (somewhat derogatory slur, really) nickname of "squishies" for obvious reasons. (My Wilybots try not to use the term around human allies, now that they have them, but they DO still use it from years of habit.)

But as for it feeling a little overused (tho maybe not), other than Josie, Spike's own son Daniel in the G1 US Cartoon Season 3 ended up an extremely underage Headmaster in Arcee's head because it also doubled as life support after he was injured. (I know it's a kid's show, but.. urgh. So many of these timelines have child soldier issues.)
