Pony Day!

So I'm all caught up on MLP:FiM now, having watched last week's episode with lunch and this week's right before dessert. My thoughts?

. . .I didn't like it. If only because I though the Mane Six were being incredibly stupid in this episode. From the instant the unnamed tourist showed up, I realized what was going to happen -- a stupid "mistaken identity" plot. Which really shouldn't work in the world of Equestria. Why, you ask?

Cutie Marks.

Seriously. Let's forget that the Mane Six should have addressed that poor claustrophobic mare by name from the start to clear up the confusion. Did they really think the Equestria Games Inspector would have a chicken for a cutie mark?? I suppose it's not outside the realms of possibility, but it really should have made them stop and pause. And while I'm glad Twilight's gotten over her nerves, a part of me can't help but miss Twilight Psycho. The few glimpses of Rainbow Freakout were pretty good, though. XD And I liked the little nods back to "Just for Sidekicks" -- though again, why wasn't Spike invited to the Crystal Empire? Just -- not a good episode, in my opinion.

This one's better, but I agree with the crowd -- too short! I don't have any real objections to alicorn!Twilight (although I would really like to see how they can come back from something that definitely feels show-ending), but I don't quite like how the whole "cutie-mark switch" thing was handled. For one thing, I thought the episode was going to be about Twilight accidentally switching EVERYONE'S cutie marks (and special talents), including her own. I think that could have made a very cool episode! For another, I don't think enough time was spent on the switched marks. I liked the song showing it, but -- I dunno. I guess I wanted more "switched Manes." Explore a little more in-depth how the disconnect between cutie marks and talents worked. I guess I think it wrapped up way too quickly to get to Twilight getting alicorned.

Actually, thinking about it. . .I sort of wish THIS had been the DVD movie they're apparently making. The plot seems perfect for it! And it would have given the writers a lot more breathing room.

Also, TV Tropes alerted me to the fact that Rarity's not expressing Rainbow's cutie mark right -- the cutie mark was gained during a RACE. Rarity should be trying to outrace every pony! Maybe they thought that was too hard to depict? (There was also a mention of Applejack making dresses when Rarity got her cutie mark finding gemstones, but I'm willing to let that one slide -- Rarity's special talent may in fact be finding the beauty in things/people. If I remember the ep correctly, her cutie mark didn't actually appear until her costumes helped the actors wow the crowd in the school play.)

Still, it's a decent episode, and it was interesting to watch them all failing at each other's special talents. Fluttershy as Pinkie Pie was pretty funny too (especially if you realize that Fluttershy and Pinkie share a voice actress).

So yeah. Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing what future episodes bring!

Additional note thanks to an Alice: Madness Returns vid I just watched on YouTube: Apparently, if Alice goes into the ending wearing her Fleshmaiden dress, she can activate Hysteria Mode in Londerland. I -- kind of want to try that. XD
