Interesting Notes

I'm still making my way through the first "Ladies" section in this etiquette book, but I came across some interesting things while walking together -- namely, according to the authors, in England it was all right for men and women who weren't lovers to go arm in arm if they went walking.
-TTV: *jawdrop* What?! That's not -- really?-
Yeah! I take it your mother and father said differently?
-TTV: Everyone in Burtonsville said differently!-
I think you're getting more of your etiquette from the Continent then -- the authors did mention it was different over there.
-TTV: *frown*-
Also, apparently a young man can indeed go walking with two lovely young ladies. *waggles eyebrows suggestively at Tie-Twister*
-TTV: *resigned tone* I'm not in a threesome.-
:p It's proving to be an interesting read -- I'm looking forward to seeing how the Gentleman's section differs. And the rules for the ballroom -- and they even have a section on how to cut meats!
-M2: Seriously? Sheesh, they were thorough in the old days.-
Leave no stone unturned when it comes to etiquette. Anyway, I've been rounding up songs for my possible music meme, AND I'm writing the ballroom scenes for Victor and Alice in "Love Will Find A Way" -- I think it's time for some fic.

26. If only I could make you mine – So Close, But Still So Far
They met again on a dance floor years later. It was a complete accident – Victor had been searching for a partner for the next dance, when he happened upon Alice, standing in the corner. They’d stared at each other in shock for a moment, then Victor had stammered out his invitation and Alice had accepted.
They waltzed together, telling each other about their lives. Victor told Alice about how he’d finally gotten to marry Victoria, and about their two children, James and Emily. Alice told Victor about the hatmaker Reginald Hargreaves deciding to court her, and how she’d finally said “yes” two months ago. They noted how much time had passed since they’d first met, and reminisced on that fateful week so long ago.
Then Alice said, “I still have that sketch you made of me.”
And Victor replied, “You know, I would have loved to have seen Wonderland.”
And they both clearly heard the unspoken message – I was in love with you back then. I think I still am.
For a moment, they seriously contemplated just leaving right then and there. Running away together, escaping from parents and guardians and responsibilities and society. Living together, being together, just like they’d both always dreamed.
But reality intruded, and reminded them that Victor was married and Alice engaged. They weren’t the kind of people to break trust. They cared about Victoria and Reginald – it wasn’t fair to hurt them on a crazy whim. As it was, the past was the past, and there was nothing they could do about it.
So they danced, clinging tightly to one another, relishing this one last moment of togetherness. And just before the song ended, they allowed themselves one soft, bittersweet kiss.
Then they parted, and returned to their actual significant others. And tried desperately not to think about what might have been.

I MAY NEVER BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO THIS SONG AGAIN
-HD: You and your angst!-
I can't help it, not all of them could be happy! All right, this fic is basically, what happens in the Solicitor's Ward-verse if Victor actually follows canon and goes to see Victoria, not Alice. Victor marries Victoria, and Alice goes back to London with her aunt and uncle, and neither of them ever admit they're in love with the other until this very awkward moment.
-J: That's depressing.-
Tell me about it -- I hated writing this one.
Trivia Time: Victor's daughter is named Emily after the Corpse Bride -- it's a common fan thing, and I like it, honestly. James is just a name I happen to like. Reginald Hargreaves is the name of the man the real Alice Liddell married -- he wasn't a hatmaker, though, I threw that in to reference the Alice/Hatter pairing. And, naturally, the fic is named for a song -- "So Close," which I first heard in "Enchanted." The whole thing sort of echoes the angsty bits of the ballroom scene from that.
-VD2: So you may have ruined that movie for yourself?-
No, no, I've got the happy version in "Love Will Find A Way!" And there's "Ever Ever After" too!
-VD: . . . Great Scott, not seeing them get together actually bugs you.-
Bloody surprise OTPs! *facepalm*
So, yeah -- this is one of a few "sad" fics in this prompt series, and one of two "bad ends," so to speak, for "Solicitor's Ward."
-TTV: Two?-
Yeah. And I'll warn you all right now --
The other one's worse.

Great, now I'm all depressed. *goes to put on "Ever Ever After" or something to make with the happy*
-TTV: I don't even want to know about that other fic she hinted at.-
-DW: No. No you don't.-
