Takin' An Early Bus Tomorrow

The showing of "Up" I want to go to is the 11:25 show, which means I want to catch the 8:55 bus to get there with enough time. *misses her chance to sleep in* Ah well, I should have a good time up there. Disney Digital 3-D movie and all that.
-D: And another one of the Discworld books, I'm sure.-
LOL, I'm still not done with "Pyramids" (though it's really good), and "Guards, Guards!" is another thick one -- I think I'll hold off until I'm at least halfway through the latter. I don't have much space left on my bookshelves anyway.
-TD: Weren't you going to get rid of a few of these books?-
Yeah, I really ought to do that soon. *reminds self*
Anyway, since it was actually nice today and it's supposed to be lovely tomorrow (keep your fingers crossed!), I present you with a summery Victor/Alice fic:

29. The sound of waves – By The Sea Forevermore
“Victor, come on!”
Victor hesitated, robe still wrapped tightly around himself as he stood at the edge of the water. Alice frowned at him, floating a few feet from shore. “It’s really all right,” she said. “I told you already, no one cares about seeing you in your bathing suit.”
“I know,” Victor said, blushing and looking away. He felt silly for hesitating, but he just couldn’t help it. He’d been raised in the same environment Alice had, one where a polite person used a bathing machine if they wanted to swim, as to not shock the other beach-goers. How could she reject it all so easily, while he couldn’t? “I just. . .it’s not proper.”
Alice rolled her eyes. “Victor, this is Wonderland. Propriety has no place here. Half of my animal friends go without pants, and you’ve never commented on that.”
Victor blushed harder. “Well, they have – fur. You never – see anything.” To himself, he muttered, “That’s what I need, fur. . . .”
Alice swam back towards him, standing once it was shallow enough to do so. She extended a friendly hand. “Victor, please. We were having such a nice day. Let’s not spoil it.”
Victor looked at her for a long moment, then nodded firmly. “I always did wonder what it would be like to swim without a bathing machine,” he admitted, undoing his robe and sliding it off. “Is – is it nice?”
Alice grinned and took his hand. “Come see!” she said, pulling him into the water.
The water was a bit chilly, but on a hot day like this, it felt wonderful. Victor let Alice drag him in until they were about waist-deep, then released her hand and half-stood, half-floated for a moment. He smiled – this was nice, not having to deal with four walls and a roof before getting to swim. He lay on his back for a moment, just enjoying the water and the breeze.
Alice swam around him. “Pleasant, isn’t it?” she said, looking a bit smug.
“It is,” Victor agreed. “I really do love this place.”
“So do I,” Alice said, before playfully splashing him and diving under the water.
“Hey!” Victor followed her, waiting until she emerged for air to splash her. They chased each other for a while, then started swimming side by side, bodies tangling in interesting ways in the water. Victor found himself blushing again. “My parents would have a fit if they saw us like this.”
“I don’t think Uncle Charles and Aunt Susan would be too happy with me, either,” Alice nodded, though she didn’t look like she cared one bit. She dove back under the surface of the water. Victor followed, watching her swim about like a fish (or a reptile, he corrected himself). She looked so beautiful like that. . . .
He couldn’t help himself. Surrendering to his urges, he swam over to her and pulled her into a soulful kiss.
They reemerged coughing and spitting up water, but by the smiles on both their faces, they considered that worth it.

-HD: Ahh, a relaxing day at the seaside. Wonderful.-
Heh, yeah.
-VuM: *confused* But -- isn't -- I thought you guys always said Wonderland was landlocked.-
They're at the Vale of Tears.
-VuM: Oooooh.-
:D This one was actually pretty extensively rewritten -- the first version didn't have any dialogue at all. It just described Victor and Alice going to the beach, building sandcastles and going for a swim, and the one time Victor kissed her underwater. I didn't really like it all that much, so I changed it to focus more on one particular trip to the beach. I'm a bit sad that the mention of the elaborate sandcastles got taken out, but this really does make a better story.
-J2: What's with Victor and his bathing suit?-
Victorian morals, made worse because he lives in one of the ultra-repressed fictional Victorian universes. It was considered rather impolite to just be strutting around in your bathing suit in those days. That's what the bathing machines were for -- they were little changing-rooms on wheels that allowed bathers to change and enter the water without anyone seeing you. Here's the Wikipedia article.
-M: Victor, your century was WEIRD.-
-TTV: You don't have to tell me, I LIVED in it.-
*snork* I'm probably overestimating their ability to move in their bathing suits, incidentally, since I'm pretty sure they were mostly made of wool and other rather heavy materials back then. Of course, they also live in Wonderland and they're swimming in child-Alice's tears, so anything's possible, really. Victor telling himself that Alice swims like a reptile is a nod to the game, where Alice becomes a honorary reptile for helping the Mock Turtle, complete with a turtle shell that appears sometimes when she's underwater. This helps her stay underwater longer. And yes, the title's from "Sweeney Todd" -- that lyric or song title (I'm not sure which) fit!

Aaand, now, bed. I'll see you all tomorrow afternoon, most likely.
