Holy Crap, Look At This
It's a Drabbles88! About the Trilogy universe! *all gasp in shock*
-D: *rolling eyes goodnaturedly* Okay, so it has been a while since you've written for straight BTTF, but does it really warrant that reaction?-
Yes, I believe it does. In continuing with the "I'm obsessed with the kidlets" theme, today's fic is all about a certain child's birthday -- thought not in the way you may think:
9. Months
“Hey, Doc?”
“Yes, Marty?”
“Jules’s birthday is May 25th, 1886, right?”
“Yes, that’s right. Why the interest?”
“Well, it’s just – we were talking a bit about pregnancy in biology class today. You know, the whole nine months thing?”
“Yes. . . ?”
“Um – isn’t May nine months away from September of the previous year?”
“Oh, I see where this is going. No, I did not – sleep with Clara after the festival. You’re forgetting I got married shortly after you returned to the future. Jules was most likely conceived on our brief honeymoon.”
“Ahh, I gotcha. Still, you guys didn’t wait around much, huh? Married after knowing each other – what, two weeks? And then Clara gets pregnant right afterwards. Must have been a shock.”
“What can I say, we were in love. You know I was willing to stay in the past with her after knowing her for a mere weekend. But yes, finding out Clara was expecting so soon was surprising. Especially since any child of ours technically shouldn’t have existed. . . .”
“That’s just plain weird to think about. How’d you guys take the news anyway?”
“Interestingly enough, we had variant thoughts on the same theme.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. Clara thought that her getting pregnant so quickly was a sign that I really was supposed to come back and save her from that ravine. I thought that it was the timeline giving me a kick in the ass about getting back to the future.”
-M: . . .Wait, seriously? You have Clara getting pregnant practically the first time she and Doc -- ah -- you know. . . .-
Apparently, yes. This fic comes from an interesting fact I overlooked while picking Jules's birthday. You see, since it's not mentioned anywhere in canon, I decided to go for the in-joke and make it the date of BTTF III's release. And then, without thinking, I made his birth year 1886.
It didn't occur to me until later that I didn't know if this was enough time for him to have actually, you know, gestated. Fortunately, doing the math backwards proved I'd given myself JUST enough time. Result? Doc and Clara are surprisingly fertile.
-OD: *tentacles making disgusted noises* Probably a side-effect of my rejuvenation.-
-VD2: Didn't you have one of those effect the fertility of Doc-2 in the Night and Day verse?-
Yup, it's the reason Verne comes along so soon after Jules. It also hits Marty and Jennifer of NonTrilogy, when they end up having their third kid while the twins are 17/18ish. Of course, those were both immediate aftereffects, so I don't know what Trilogy's excuse is, besides me being absentminded. ^^;
Anyway, I was thinking about it lately, and then I noticed the "months" prompt, and voila! For reference, Doc and Clara get married on September 15th in my worlds -- fast, I know, but, as Doc rightly points out, he was willing to stay in the past with Clara after knowing her for two days. Don't you love movie magic true love?
-TD: Hey, some of us do.-
Okay, yes, it is nice. Anyway, one mention -- the bit at the end was at least partially inspired by the old BTTF writer Tekva, who had Clara express a similar sentiment in one of her (sadly offline now) fics, while Doc's thought can probably trace its origins back to
foxywriter and a couple of her fics. Seriously, though, I can totally see them reacting like that:
Clara: A baby? The universe must approve of me not being dead!
Doc: A baby? Okay, okay, I'll hurry up on getting us out of this time period!
-M: *snicker* And then his oldest son ends up getting time-displaced anyway, if your shipping preferences have anything to say about it.-
Well, Marlene COULD end up moving to the past. Either way, there's working time machines by the time that happens, so it's way easier to do damage control.
Speaking of kids, I'm making some progress on the "Secundus" grandkids. I have some couples and some preliminary kids:
Chester Van Dort & Allison Laidlaw: Walter Van Dort, Emma Van Dort (Walter's the other name Victor would give a boy, while Emma is just a name Allison likes)
Vincent Van Dort & Mabel Lloyd: Virginia Van Dort, Henry Van Dort (I wanted to continue the V theme with one kid, while Henry was one of Alice's alternate names for a son (yeah, Grandma and Grandpa get a lot of solicitations for names))
Lorina Van Dort & Douglas McFly: Norman McFly, Benjamin McFly (Norman's an in-joke toward the first Part II script (it was what Marty Jr/Douglas was GOING to be called), while Benjamin I just picked off the list)
Marlene McFly & Jules Brown: Electra Brown, Hector Brown (Doc DOES get the time machine working, and Jules and Marlene end up history nerds with a bit of an emphasis on Greek history. Electra, of course, is a shout-out to the card game, and I decided on Hector after coming up with the above excuse for Electra. :p)
Verne Brown & Mary Elizabeth Wright: Dorothy Brown (I just like Mary Elizabeth and Dorothy)
Isaac Brown (Still working on him!)
Jonathan Lloyd & Charlotte Dodgson: Franklin Lloyd, Flora Lloyd (adopted) (Again, just names I liked. I also figured Charlotte, being adopted herself, would be open to adopting another little girl.)
All of this is still a bit in flux -- Isaac needs a family, while I'll probably add a couple more kids to a few of these couples. All of them having two kids is way too neat.
-VD: Was that part of the reason behind Isaac?-
A little, yeah. I kind of wanted to give either Marty or Doc a third kid for variety, and Doc won out. And since I follow the fandom's tendency to give him a girl for the third kid (or, in Trilogy's case, two girls for the price of one), I decided on a third son to mix it up a little.
-J: I think you've got a bit of an addiction to making family trees.-
Hey, there are far worse ways for me to be spending my time.
-TTV: I have to ask -- are any of the grandchildren Touched?-
I would imagine a few are, yeah. Lorina probably passes it on to at least one of her kids, and Doc's strain would show up somewhere in the boys' families. This is a sciency lot in general, after all.
-TD: *laugh* Oh, we're more than aware.-
:p
Okay, I'm running out of things to say here, so let me leave you with some weird-ass Z names I found on that Victorian Era names site:
Girls: Zona, Zylphia
Boys: Zebulon, Zedock
There were some other weird ones further up in the alphabet, but these are the ones that REALLY stuck out. For obvious reasons.
-TTV: *stare*-
-VuM: Suddenly "Fitzwilliam" doesn't seem so bad, huh?-
-TTV: I'll give you that it's better than "Zedock."-
-D: *rolling eyes goodnaturedly* Okay, so it has been a while since you've written for straight BTTF, but does it really warrant that reaction?-
