A Multiverse Christmas Carol: Stave Ten
THIS IS THE SAD ONE, FAIR WARNING
Stave Ten:
“I promised him I’d go walk there on a Sunday. Oh, Alice, if you could – could just s-see how g-green and – and--”
All at once, Victor broke down in sobs, burying his face in his hands. His family huddled around him, embracing him tightly as they too wept. Alice pressed her head against his hair, squeezing her eyes shut. “He’s in a better place now,” she mumbled, sounding like she was trying to convince herself as much as her husband.
Victor nodded, but did not stop crying. Edna pressed her hands against her chest, feeling her heart break as she watched the mourning family. She’d never liked children – she’d always considered them too messy and noisy – but to see this. . .to see such innocent, kind people suffering so. . . .
Victor abruptly stood, murmuring, “Excuse me,” to his wife and children. Edna watched from her perch halfway up the stairs as he approached, his steps slow and ponderous as he made his way to the second story. God, he looked so old now. . . .
And then he stopped for a moment, looking straight at her.
Edna froze, pinned by his gaze. She knew he didn’t really see her. That he was just staring at the steps before him, as if they were the highest, most dangerous mountain in the world. But it was all too easy to read accusation in those pain-filled eyes. Why didn’t you help me? Why didn’t you at least pay me a decent wage?
Why did you let my son die?
Then he continued up, passing right through her as he laboriously continued his ascent. Edna turned and reached out to him, even though she knew it was useless. “I’m sorry,” she whispered to deaf ears. “Oh God, Victor, I – I--”
It was too much. After all that she’d seen, it was too much. She collapsed on the stairs, weeping. “I’m, so, so sorry. . . .”
-TTV: . . . *sniffle*-
I know! But it had to be written. Yes, folks, this is the rewrite of the "mourning Tiny Tim's death" scene. I really wanted to punch Edna in the gut here -- and the reader too. :( Poor Timothy. . .
-M2: That's what Christmas is all about -- child death.-
*pokes him in the side* This one takes again from the Carrey/Zemeckis adaptation -- specifically, the moment where Victor ends up looking at Edna as if he can really see her. That's straight from the movie. It's a pretty powerful moment. The adaptation Zemeckis did may not be the best, but I think it's pretty good for what it is. Carrey actually does a pretty good turn as Scrooge, and there's lots of good moments. And that opening sweep over the city as everyone gets ready for Christmas! I saw the movie in the IMAX, and let me tell you, those opening credits were MADE for it. :D
-TTV: The scene with Want and Ignorance? Less so.-
Yeaaah, that was creepy. And all of the future scenes, like this one, were appropriately depressing. Poor Cratchits. . .
Not a lot to say here, really, just -- a family torn apart by the loss of one of its youngest members. Fortunately we know Edna is going to change her ways and help them so Tim will live. And we'll see one of the results of that change tomorrow! :D After this infusion of sad, we could use the happy.
Not much else to say about today. . .worked mainly on getting the second chapter of "Forgetting You" postworthy. Also saw the latest MLP: FiM episode. Applejack, you have been spending WAY too much time around Twilight. (Who is actually absent in this episode.) Other than that, it's been a pretty low-key day. I did get Mom's Christmas present wrapped, however, so that's out of the way. Yay. :D Now to tackle that last Christmas drabble I gotta do. . .
