Kind Of A "Meh" Food Saturday

Went to the fabled cookout at my aunt's place and spent most of the day there -- my parents, aunt, uncle, cousin, and his girlfriend did most of the talking, while I just sat quietly and listened to everyone else with occasional interjections. (Not that I minded this state of affairs too much, given I'm pretty introverted overall. But man, it can sometimes be exhausting just LISTENING to everyone else talk! Especially my mom and aunt, as they can REALLY get going. . .) And ate -- there was plenty of food at this shindig! Not quite as much as last year, but that's probably for the best. We had:
-->A raw veggie platter with hummus dip, and crackers with some sort of spreadable vegan cheese with chives: both perfectly fine appetizers, though I preferred the veggies and dip to the crackers
-->My mom's contribution, a corn, bean, and tomato salad: Very tasty! I wouldn't mind having it again if she wanted to make it for just us
-->A watermelon salad with cucumber and tomato, served with feta cheese for anyone who wanted it: Better than I thought it would be! I didn't expect any of these combinations to work, and yet, they did. Something to keep in mind as the summer goes on, perhaps?
-->A potato salad made with avocado instead of mayo: . . .literally tasteless, I don't know how. And I really like potatoes, so this was a definite let-down.
-->What looked like grilled chicken with some sort of barbecue sauce: Perfectly fine, but I've definitely had better.
-->Vegan ice cream: Didn't taste all that different from regular ice cream, though it had a slightly-more-pudding-like texture. I had the chocolate flavor and found it just fine.
So yeah, it was a decent meal overall, I guess. Just I was rather disappointed in what I expected to be my favorite dish. :(
As you might imagine, after all that, supper was a late affair -- spare ribs! Paired with chips, pickles, and cantaloupe. The chips and pickles were fine; the cantaloupe we already knew was a bit "meh" (not as juicy as it should have been); the spare ribs were tasty, but both Mom and I got some tough ones (I had particular trouble getting all the meat off the bone with mine). And then my parents picked up a cheesecake sampler for dessert -- I had a slice of the "brownie," which was decently chocolately, but had kind of a pudding-like texture, rather than anything I would think of as a brownie. Mom had a plain piece, Dad -- well, I dunno, though I assume it was either turtle or strawberry, given they said neither of them had the other brownie piece. But they both said they weren't very impressed. *shrug* Can't win 'em all.
In other news, we got home late enough that I wasn't able to fit in Bloodlines -- it'll have to be a Masquerade Monday this long weekend! I DID fit in a walk, though -- five laps around our neighborhood, yay. Pretty nice weather -- not too hot, and not too humid. Though the latter was going up as the evening went on, so the AC's on for the night. Just -- easier for sleeping, you know? And tomorrow and Monday are supposed to get pretty hot, so -- ahead of the curve!
I also fit in some writing -- even if I couldn't play my game, I could certainly write about the related AU! Did a rough draft of the scene where Victor and Victoria reunite, based off the "Samantha" encounter that occurs in Hollywood. Alice initially encourages them to reconnect, figuring if she can subtly push Victor back toward his old mortal life, it'll make it easier to let him go eventually. ...Given "Londerland Bloodlines" is one of my "poly" AUs, we see how well THAT worked. XD I really do want to actually write this up as a "proper" AU one day. I like the game, I like this little world I've created. . .if I could stop coming up with Forgotten Vows Verse stories, maybe I'd have the time. XD Ah well, put it on the "to-do" list for the future.
Not on the list for the future: more "Scenes From Secundus!" Enjoy this seasonally-inappropriate short on snow, originally written in 2010. Cripes, which means "Secundus" itself is going to be ten years old at least next year. . .where the hell does the time go??
Ignoring that existential minefield, I also got in some videos -- it was "Riddles With Jay And Kassie" day again! More ridiculousness from 7 Second Riddles, though Jay and Kassie actually did pretty well this time around! At the very least, they've gotten much better at spotting who is a vampire and who isn't. XD I also watched one of Call Me Kevin's latest Minecraft videos -- he attempted to burn down the jungle he was lost in (which didn't work and ended up setting HIM alight at one point), then finally managed to escape and found himself in an ocean biome, which he ended up exploring and finding buried treasure in (no thanks to his idiot horse and all the zombies trying to drown him). So a net gain for him, nice. XD
And currently I'm doing the RP thing while preparing tumblr queues and saving up new drafts, as is usual for a Saturday. We'll see how much I can get to before exhaustion drives me to bed -- at least I have nowhere I have to be tomorrow! And the house to myself for a good chunk of the day, as my parents are going to a Connecticut flea market. Looking forward to it. :) Night all!
