Ahhh -- yes, having your prequel/sequel made by people who thoroughly loved the original is always going to be helpful. :)

Indeed -- I mean, it may feel like some people roll out of bed and go "EVIL!" but it's rarely exactly like that. People have complex inner worlds and all that. Though, yes, said complex inner worlds may be shitholes. Nothing stopping someone from having understandable motivations and still being a dickweed!
