Three Strikes, You're Out?
Feb. 25th, 2008 11:14 pmWork today was -- interesting. And thankfully on the slow side. We had three very significant mechanical malfunctions:
1. My boss is replacing the computer keyboards, since the old ones are getting worn out. While wiring up the second one, "something happened," and now one of our computers doesn't work.
2. The scanner gun we use to scan in the completed clothing orders is on the fritz -- the beam would not stop blinking. I tried unplugging and replugging it a few times -- no go. Luckily we can put the orders in with the keyboard too, but that takes longer.
3. This is the biggie -- apparently our boiler is unsafe and had to be shut down IMMEDIATELY, according to the inspector. I knew we were having some problems with the thing, but DAMN. Not good.
-VD: Someone needs to step up her job search.-
I've looked in the classifieds a bit. There's not much available. Hmmmm. I'll keep looking, though.
-TD: Sounds like you could use a competent spark on the premises.-
-D: Or our Changeling counterpart, dramatic failures aside.-
Yeah, really. That thing has broken down on us before, but I've never heard it classified as unsafe. Yeesh.
It also didn't help that I hadn't brought either a notebook or "The Light Fantastic," so I was kinda bored out of my mind. I made do with magazines and doodling, but still -- remind me never to do that again!
-VD2: Yes, we can't afford to waste any more writing days. Speaking of which-
To be fair, I have an idea for a Leap Day fic, but I need to do a little research first.
-DW: *licks bunny* "What would happen if the DeLorean tried to go to February 29th in a non-leap year?"-
*shrug*
-D: I suspect the DeLorean simply wouldn't complete the transit, given that it's an invalid date.-
-RPD: Or is this more of an issue of the buildup of "missing time" in a year, due to the discrepancies between the calendar year and the actual time of Earth's orbit around the sun?-
Second, yeah. I can't shake the feeling that that missing .24319 etc etc has to GO somewhere. Not to mention that leap years apparently add a little too much time BACK, that's why certain century years don't get them.
-HD: Time enjoys messing with people's heads, I think. I wouldn't be surprised, at any rate, given some of our past conversations.-
And the fact he trapped you at 6 o'clock for an extended period?
-HD: Yes, that too.-
-OD: *tentacles chitter* The time's not really missing, Victoria, it's just not marked on the calendar year. It still passes. *Albert* Besides, it's not like the year doesn't have other temporal anomalies.-
-VD: Exactly. Daylight Savings Time -- When you spring forward, you have a 23-hour day, when you fall back, you have a 25-hour day.-
-M2: Hey, didn't the trilogy take place over a daylight saving's thing?-
-VD: I believe it did, yeah. I've got the DeLorean calibrated to automatically adjust, so I assume Trilogy does too.-
Of course, that brings up the question of what happens when you try to travel to the hour of switchover on those days. . . .
-TTV: You know, that whole mess with Emily and me being "already parted by death" suddenly seems insanely simple.-
*giggle* It makes my head spin too, Victor. And I'm planning on using this for a drabbles88 fic!
-D: Off to BTTF.com with you then.-
Indeed.
