This is turning out to be a rather cinematic weekend. We watched Evan Almighty yesterday, and we're going to see Iron Man tomorrow. The only movies we saw today were on the Sci-Fi channel, and if you've ever seen the movies Sci-Fi shows on weekends, you know they can hardly be called "movies."
-VD: It amazes me what they'll show sometimes. Today's offering, Carnosaur, looked faker than a lot of the very old stop-motion animation!-
Tell me about it! I mean, my God, it looked exactly like a plastic toy! Then again, none of these films could be described as big-budget. . . .
Thoughts on Evan Almighty -- that movie got a bad rap in theaters. We LOVED it. It was actually really, really funny! I knew Steve Carrell was a great comedian -- I knew and loved him back when we had Comedy Central and got "The Daily Show" -- but this just proved he has a great knack. And Wanda Sykes is hilarious. *lowers voice* Hell, you know, I think I may have laughed more at this movie than at its predecessor, Bruce Almighty.
-HD: *lowers voice* Why are we whispering?-
*points to Victor*
-HD: O.o??-
I don't want to upset him.
-TTV: *overhearing* Why would that opinion upset me?-
-M: Jim Carrey starred in the first one.-
-TTV: *hurt puppy look* And you didn't think he was funny?-
Not him, the script. Bruce Almighty started out strong, but then it kinda got bogged down in the whole romance subplot. They avoided that more with Evan, who is revealed to be already married with three boys. Not that it doesn't have sappy moments, they're just handled better in my opinion.
-TTV: Ooh. *pause* But you liked "The Truman Show."-
Yeah, but that was MEANT to be more pathosy or what have you. Jim's a good actor and I hate reviewers bashing him, but he's picked some clunker scripts.
-TTV: I'm sure Chris Lloyd's done the same thing.-
-D: Oh, yes!-
-VD2: It's called "Stacked."-
Yeah, he was the most watchable thing about that show. Probably because he was back to playing a mad sciency sort. I know it's typecasting, but he does that schtick so well!
Anyway, I can recommend Evan Almighty. In fact, you have to get the DVD just so you can see the music video that runs over the beginning of the end credits. "Everybody dance now!"
As for Iron Man -- I'm nervous. Marvel's been a little hit-or-miss for us. We've loved the Spider-Man and X-Men series (though yes, the third entries were weak (X-Men more than Spider-Man)), but some of the others. . . . Hulk sucked. And Ghost Rider looked to be made of goofy. I've heard pretty much all positives about Iron Man so far -- including a couple of opinions about it being a more "adult" superhero movie.
I'm -- not sure how to feel about that.
-DW: Pardon?-
Well, to me, the popcorn factor is a big reason why I like these movies. Yeah, I like them to have some depth, but -- from what I hear, Tony Stark had some serious problems. Yeah, Peter and the X-Men have their angstfests, but Tony's got drug abuse and stuff like that. I suppose it makes him more realistic -- but he's a freaking COMIC BOOK CHARACTER. I dunno. We'll see when I see the movie.
Not much else to say. Wrote a little on "There's Always Tomorrow" for OckDoc, got more done on "From the Ashes Reborn." Basically just chilled out.
-TD: Preparing for tomorrow's early rising?-
Yeah. Up at 8 on a Sunday! Not right. Though Mom probably does have a point about less people being at a morning show.
So let's wrap this up with a story about the tallest, most awesome Lego Tower ever. Thanks for the link, [livejournal.com profile] martyfan. See ya later!
