This has been bugging me on and off all day.
-D: What?-
What period of time does "Corpse Bride" span? I saw a discussion about it back in the old threads, and this morning I got to thinking about it. It's kind of hard to tell.
-TD: It doesn't have any time machines. You'd think it would be straightforward.-
It's not quite. Now, we know this for a fact -- there are at LEAST two days involved. What's bugging me is the possibility of a third. We've got two possibly-contradictory lines of dialogue, you see.
-VD2: Oh?-
-MF: What's up, then?-
I dunno. Let me lay out the facts as we know them:
-->Day One is the day of the wedding rehearsal. We come across that around five in the afternoon, I would say. Victor and Victoria meet, like each other on sight, Victor flubs his vows, sets Maudeline on fire, gets banished to practice, goes to the woods, inadvertently marries Emily. That's all Day One.
-->Also Day One is the Van Dorts and Everglots having tea together, Barkis having the Town Crier telling everyone about Victor's "dark-haired temptress," and William and Nell begging for a chance to find him. "Just give us until dawn!"
-HD: That all seems in order.-
Indeed.
-->We can reasonably ascertain that Victor and Emily's return Upstairs and Victor's visit to Victoria is also Day One. Makes sense, right?
-TD: So far so good.-
Ahh, now here's where it gets complicated. Victoria's escape to see Pastor Galswells obviously takes place at night, during one of the Crier's predicted scattered showers. However, when we next see Victoria, attempting to take out the lock with a fireplace poker, the way it's lit suggests that there's light starting to come through the window. I'm almost certain it's dawn, which means that we've moved onto Day Two. Fair enough, right?
And then we have this line of dialogue from Finis: "You will marry Lord Barkis tomorrow."
Which implies that she's marrying him the next day. Right after this (and after Barkis has his little evil laughter session in the halls), we see the Van Dort carriage. Nell says that "it's almost dawn," which seems to jive with what we saw earlier. This is where Mayhew dies.
-M: Uh, not seeing the problem here. . . .-
You will in a moment -- naturally, Mayhew ends up in the Land of the Dead, and fills Victor in on the news. But what he says is:
"And Miss Victoria" (Victor asks how she is) "Well, she's getting married this evening."
And HERE is where we run into some problems. Now, Victoria getting married that evening would simplify matters -- the Dead obviously arrive during the night to celebrate Victor and Emily's upcoming nupitals. Which means the movie takes place over two days (or, accurately, one full day and one half). However, what do we make of Finis's line? Did the Everglots change their minds off-screen?
-HD: They're allowed to do that, aren't they?-
Yes, I suppose they are. But there's another problem for little anal old me. The time period the movie is set in is supposed to be roughly analogous to the Victorian Era, right? And you know how I've done all that research on Victorian weddings for Victor and Alice?
They didn't HAVE evening weddings back then. In fact, I'm pretty sure you could ONLY get married in the morning -- at the latest early afternoon. *goes to look up stuff* This short article declares 12 noon the usual time; this article states that you had to have a morning wedding BY LAW up until the 1880s, and after that only to 3 P.M. (unless you lived in the American South, in which case you had evening weddings so people didn't sweat to death).
-DW: . . . . You've put a lot of thought into this.-
I know. Now, I'm perfectly willing to admit that the best explanation is that Victoria did in fact have some sort of afternoon wedding to Lord Barkis (it certainly looked like daytime in the church), and a reception in the evening, putting "Corpse Bride" at two days. It's a fictional, semi-fairy tale world, and I'm sure Tim Burton didn't obsessively research things like me (or maybe he did, I don't know the man). But that slight discrepancy and the chance that it's three days, somehow, not two, bugs me.
-OD: *tentacles chatter* And they managed to do this without a time machine. I'm impressed. *Jules* Perhaps you should just assume Occam's Razor on this point, Vic.-
I know, I know, I'm probably the only one who cares anymore. But I can't help it. At least this has yet to come up in any of my fanfic.
-RPD: And thank God it's not actually important to -- er --
We've talked, he's okay being called DGVictor. Though I had to bribe him with a candy bar.
-TTV: I'm not surprised.-
-RPD: Yes, right, DGVictor's backstory. Incidentally, didn't you have a question for Museical for the Nexus?-
I just have one more day of work to slog through -- let me do that, and I'll get him out and about tomorrow afternoon. Then Alice can come out. I gotta get Clockwork into the Nexus again too, he hasn't been in all August.
-VD: What about fanfic?-
Got two prompts done for the 30 Dances, I'll start typing those up soon. Oh, and I have a present for you.
-VD: *suspicious*-
Don't give me that look, it's something genuinely good. Guess what I finished editing today.
-VD: O.O! What -- REALLY?-
Yup! I opened it up, thought, "I really want to get this done" -- and I got it done! :D I want to give the chapter one final look-over, and get the Facts page redone, but I PROMISE you the final chapter will go up over my vacation.
-VD: *hugstiem!* Thank you! It's about time!-
Tell me about it. And OckDoc, this means that I'll start typing up "There's Always Tomorrow!"-
-OD: *grin, cheers from the tentacles*-
Uh, as soon as I figure out what notebook it's in. *blush*
-OD: . . .-
Well, there's a lot of them in here!
-OD: *facepalm*-
