Learned/Noticed Something Today

Was watching someone do a Let's Play/Analyze of "Alice: Madness Returns," and she pointed out a sign I hadn't paid much attention to before in the game -- Theophilius Everett Horton, Clockmaker. Upon seeing it, I thought: "Theophilius? Hang on a second, haven't I seen that name associated with the Hatter before?" So I paused the video and went looking. It is indeed a reference to Hatter -- a double reference, no less. Theophilius Carter was one of the inspirations, at least visually, for the Hatter -- he had the nickname "the Mad Hatter" from standing outside his furniture shop wearing a top hat. He was a bit of a mad inventor too -- he made an alarm clock bed that physically DUMPED the person out at the appointed time. XD Everett Horton, however, is a reference to Edward Everett Horton -- who played the Mad Hatter in the 1933 version of Alice In Wonderland! :D I'm pretty sure the "clockmaker" bit is just a reference to how Hatter, especially McGee's Hatter, is obsessed with time. :) So that's cool! There was also a bit where she mentioned a dodo on a sign, and how the attached name is that of the guy who first saw them -- or the guy who saw them last? Damn, I'll have to rewatch that bit and get back to you. . .

Other thing I learned today -- May Day was apparently a big deal back in the Victorian era. Parades, a May Queen, a Maypole, flower gathering, bonfires. . . I've decided that Burtonsville didn't go in for quite all of that, but they decorated with flowers and had a sort of community picnic with a Maypole for the younger set. I've also decided it's Victor's favorite holiday, and updated my various headcanon lists to reflect that fact. Actually, I spent quite a bit of time updating the headcanon list that's on forgotten_vows -- you can see that here. No major revisions beyond the "May Day" thing -- but I do have a few new headcanons coming in the future. . .
