Sunny Snow Sunday
Jan. 30th, 2022 11:26 pmAs in, it was sunny out, but that snow's not going anywhere for a bit -- Dad shoveled us out this morning, and he's of the opinion we got about 18 inches, so yeah -- foot and a half. Fun times! I can only hope the parking lot at the Diocese has been properly plowed tomorrow. . .at least I have my snow boots for this nonsense!
Even with the snow outside, though, I had a pretty good day overall:
1. Keep up with the FoD Playthrough Progression; Free Writing Day otherwise: Check – as usual, did the Playthrough Progression write-up right after I did the “actual gameplay” write-up for this list (below). I’m kind of using the Abernathys as a “central information hub” for Minutemen radiant quests, since we don’t have the radio or actual scouts yet. It’s a fun little thing to keep up with, especially when it comes to sorting out a timeline for any future “Fallout of Darkness” fanfic snippets! Definitely need to point Victor toward Diamond City sooner rather than later, though – after Starlight’s set up!
2. Keep up with YouTube Subs, the OXtra "Show of the Weekend" in the WL, and Jon's latest F:NV "Utter Chaos" video: Check – four videos total, nice –
A) Started after gaming with the OXtra “Show of the Weekend” I was intrigued by the other day: “Play-Doh Pictionary: Can You Guess the Game?” AKA Ellen, Luke, and Andy mold video game characters out of Play-Doh so the others can guess the game and who they are. First round was a round-robin: Andy gave Luke the task of making someone from Kingdom Hearts for Ellen to guess, and he created a rather goofy-looking Sora with pipe-cleaner arms; Luke gave Ellen Dead Space for Andy to guess, with her making a very flat and brown ant-like necromorph; and Ellen gave Andy God of War (2018) for Luke to guess, and Andy made a SHOCKINGLY good Kratos-with-Dad-Beard head! After that was pick-your-own – Luke started things off with an Isabella from Animal Crossing with a VERY crushed-in face; Andy once again impressed everyone with an adorable take on the Cacademon from DOOM (an angry red tomato with a googly eye); and Ellen did a decent job on – you guessed it, a Pikachu from Pokemon. Though the face ended up looking rather like the one in the famous “surprised Pikachu” meme. XD They all had a lot of fun, even if poor Luke’s creations were rather overshadowed by his coworkers’ – not even push-pin limbs could save poor Isabella. Shame. *pats him*
B) Then it was a quick hop over to Call Me Kevin playing Forewarned, which is basically the ghost-hunting game Phasmophobia, only this time you’re in an Egyptian tomb, looking for relics and avoiding the protector spirit. Kevin played a couple of games with his friend Max, running away from mummies, taunting the “Mesai” spirit, and getting knocked into acid pits (and occasionally burning up the mummified remains of his dead friend, as you can choose to come back as a mummy to aid your other teammates) before switching to playing with random groups!
And what started as him bringing up Brendan Fraser in The Mummy for shits and giggles (because loving Brendan a little too much on the channel is one of his running gags) turned into him convincing everyone playing with him to just call themselves “Brendan.” XD The newcomers were a little puzzled at first, and then just went along with it. Many lovely holiday snaps were taken, and occasionally the tombs were successfully raided without everyone dying. Just sometimes Kevin. Or two of the other Brendans, who helped the other two get out only to be banished back to the tomb because the Land Rover was a rental. XD It was very wholesome, everybody’s-having-fun trolling, and I liked it. :)
C) Then, after my work-out and supper, it was over to GrayStillPlays for another round of Happy Wheels! Started with a Spider-Man-themed bottle flip (with Pogo Guy instead of Nixon – and one of the things you had to flip your bottle on was Satan’s Ghost Flying Box of Darkness – Gray did indeed manage it), and then moved on through the world’s longest ball fall (complete with balls, smaller balls, rotating platforms, platforms with spikes on the underside and bouncers on each wall, squares – some with crossbows – and wrecking balls to fall through), a rope swing “speedrun” (featuring swinging across three successive ropes through a very tight thumbnail hole, before grabbing another rope to swing to the win – Gray basically won this one through sheer LUCK), a pogo fight against some very angry scribbles on a sheet of lined paper (complete with a poorly-drawn win; easily the easiest board Gray played today), a balcony fall where Bike Dad (minus bike and son) had to fall from a high balcony and avoid all the fights along the way to get the coin at the bottom (Gray got SO close so many times, only to take something sharp to the head – it took Dad getting ripped in half to finally grab the coin); and a boost-apocalypse where Pogo Guy had to fly across the desert with the help of mines (with Gray forcing him to hop backward to see such sights as a giant grackle flying off with an equally-large snake). XD Some real suffering tonight from Gray as he tried to conquer some tricky boards – you love to see it!
D) And, as typical for a Sunday, we ended on Jon of Many A True Nerd playing Fallout: New Vegas Utter Chaos! Today was a bit of a weird one for Jon, as his INTENTION had been to check out the interior of the Hoover Dam for fun doors, then figure out a way into the Honest Hearts DLC to scan for doors there. INSTEAD, what happened was he found a door that lead to an underwater cave – and then discovered such doors made him act at least partially like he was underwater (as in, dark blurry screen and slow movement speed) and couldn’t be fixed by a save and reload, meaning he had to reload back to the beginning of the episode (fortunately this was in the first five minutes), THEN found a way into one of the final areas of the Lonesome Road DLC, started checking for doors, and accidentally tripped one of the enemy triggers going backwards, meaning he had to fight a bunch of tough enemies while crippled from a mine and on one hit point. He actually held his own pretty well with his grenade launcher at first, but eventually one of the “Marked Men” got the upper hand, and he decided to nope out of there on the reload instead.
However, he decided NOT to give up on the idea of looking for doors in Lonesome Road, instead just searching for a safer entrance INTO the DLC. This did involve a lot of wandering around, running into a guy whom he could not complete a quest for, and accidentally triggering the “underwater” bug again, but eventually he found a way into one of the old missile silos!
He couldn’t use the console because he didn’t have ED-E the eyebot companion, and he couldn’t just go back through the door because it was actually locked for plot reasons from the other side. Cue Jon having to murder more Marked Men while looking for a way out farther up. Fortunately he did indeed find one, and FINALLY located the proper door into the DLC from the sharecropper farm – Hopeville! Full of scouts with gatling lasers, a fuckton of mines (which Jon ATTEMPTED to use to his advantage when faced with a potential ambush, only for some of his attackers to use an alternate route up to him – meaning he was nearly killed by a guy wielding a nail board); a new Red Glare missile launcher which Jon used to fix his own, and a laser detonator for the nuclear warheads around, blocking more doors! And what was behind one of them?
None other than Sunny Smiles, bartender at the Prospector Saloon in Goodsprings and THE WOMAN WHO HELPS GET YOU THROUGH THE TUTORIAL. Jon was thrilled to see her, even if she was mysteriously in a hazmat suit with a chainsaw. XD Better yet, she led him to a working monorail, allowing him to pop between a couple of stations to check doors (and get shot at by the NCR, for reasons he’s not sure of yet), and then somehow managed to teleport to Goodsprings on her own, possibly because she’s hardcoded to be in certain places and do certain things as part of the tutorial? At any rate, Jon did a little bottle-shooting with her, then ended the tutorial to keep her from trying to wander off anywhere dangerous. And then followed her example and traded in his little Ripper for a very glitchy chainsaw. XD Now he’s got even more places to try and find next week so he can try to get ED-E! You love to see it.
3. Play Fallout 4, swap Codsworth for Preston, and clear out Starlight Drive-In: Check, though it all took more doing than expected! Starting straight with swapping Codsworth for Preston – after confirming that I’d left no junk with Codsworth, I started looking for Preston around Sanctuary –
And couldn’t find him for three in-game hours. I must have gone around Sanctuary TWICE, picking up respawned junk in the containers and whatnot, before FINALLY stumbling across him – and by that time, it was pouring in-game, so I elected to reload and see if I could find him quicker in better weather then. Fortunately, the answer was yes, as this time he came down the main road much earlier and I was able to grab him in just a half-hour of game time. With Codsworth back in Sanctuary on food production, and Preston having given me the word about Finch Farm, I grabbed some materials to make a turret for Abernathy (which was critically low on defense), plus a dog bowl to drop off at the Red Rocket for good old Dogmeat. :) Though once AT Abernathy, I discovered I’d forgotten a component – oil! So I went searching around their farm for some – fortunately they had a couple of gas canisters it was okay for me to take, and I built them a turret facing the melon field, since Connie was already on guard duty for the tato field. With that sorted, I got Victor oriented toward Starlight, and he and Preston set off! He killed a radstag along the way for meat, hide, and bovine rennet (as I’d tested out milking the Abernathy’s brahmin, Clarabelle, and now have milk – I just need rennet for cheese) –
And then they stumbled across a cabin with some feral ghouls around it, and I realized this was probably Wayne Gorski’s place! The game confirmed it shortly thereafter, so after killing the ghouls and looting the place (and then passing off some loot to Preston – also making some super-drugs just to combine some of the ones Victor had picked up), I sent Victor downstairs to grab some more shit, kill Wayne (in a lucky sneak attack), grab his incomplete mini nuke, and – most importantly – his Wasteland Survival Guide! Which is NORMALLY the most shit one in the game, as it just marks Diamond City on your map (which – it’ll be marked just from getting “Jewel of the Commonwealth”), but I have the mod that makes it mark a couple of other places too, like notably Goodneighbor and the Boston Airport. So that was nice!
Anyway, once all that was done, Victor and Preston headed back out into the Commonwealth at large, killing another radstag, before stumbling across a tiny two-person raider camp. The raiders were killed in short order, and after taking their stuff, Victor and Preston proceeded toward the road.
And started getting shot at again.
By GUNNERS.
Yeah, uh, Victor did his best, but he was killed before I could stimpack him against the assault. He’s still using primarily early-game pipe weaponry and the like, which is – not great against laser pistols. Fortunately I’d saved literally just seconds before, so after taking out the one guy who HAD seen us and taking all his stuff, Victor and Preston booked it out of there to avoid the rest of the camp. Straight toward a little trader hut, in fact! One that I’m pretty sure was added by another one of my mods, a Commonwealth overhaul one, as I don’t remember this guy, his hut, and his CAT FARM from my earlier playthrough. XD Anyway, he had some useful junk, strawberries (another mod addition), and cat meat on him, so Victor basically traded him all his drugs and a couple of caps for that. XD Around then, he started getting tired, so I found him a good, quiet, flat section of road nearby, had him set up his tent, then turned in for the in-game night.
Up bright and early the next morning, the noise of some stuff fighting each other brought Victor and Preston to an old barn and generator station, where a Stingwing was harassing a bunny. Victor killed the Stingwing, and SOME sort of explosion took out another one around the back, though don’t ask me how it triggered it. *shrug* Victor got the goodies (including a fusion core), and then he and Preston oriented themselves BACK toward Starlight and managed to get over there once and for all!
Where Victor nearly blew himself up investigating the big screen and the living spaces behind and within. Forgot there was a mine there on the stairs. *facepalm* But he avoided death, looted all the goodies, and – with Preston’s help – killed the mole rat infestation that had taken out the previous owners. I left it off with a giant scrapping effort for the main parking lot – ESPECIALLY those rad barrels in the water puddle! Can’t have those irradiating the place. Next time, we clear out the main building, then we start making it a settlement! :)
4. Work on tumblr drafts: Check! Four-part update for the Chill Save this week – and that doesn’t even cover my last play session with Victor and Alice in full! O.o I just decided to break after they completed the temple and do the final bits of them visiting the museum and celebrating New Year’s at the cantina next week. But yeah, all the pictures are sorted, and I have them in the draft posts with some starter text. I also started working on one of the shipping memes I gathered off tumblr to post through February, though I may start by reblogging the original one I did a while back this week just to buy myself some time to complete the others. :p
5. Get in a workout: Check – back on the bike to finish off Jon’s Unpacking livestream! He and Claire listened to the ending song (after some initial nattering on how Jon for some baffling reason thought the game was warning people about “unprotected sex” leading to babies when it started writing the title at the end there – never mind the final home is one with two mommies and thus unprotected sex is less of an issue in THAT sense!), commented on the nice final shot of the Protagonist and her Wife, then filled the remaining time with Claire reading through chat replies while Jon went through all the pages in the photo album to see all the little notes you get for the different rooms if you choose them for the official picture. I couldn’t read most of them (downsides of watching this on a bike farther away from the screen than normal), but it was fun nonetheless! So that was a good way to end the livestream. :)
And then I tried to find this one particular mod video showcasing Carl’s Sims 4 Gameplay Overhaul, and it took me so long I got frustrated and negated all the happy feelings you get from the ending of Unpacking. *sigh* Never even got to the point of seeing any gameplay – the creator was just reading off the notes from his Patreon! Ah well. . .might finish that tomorrow, or might just plunge straight into watching the Oxventure livestream for their music video! That should be the next thing on the playlist, anyway. . .
And that and finally deciding on my phone upgrade (we're going with the same people my Mom gets her phone plan from, for ease of use) just about covers my day! Now I just have to head to bed and get ready for another full week of work. . .at least traffic shouldn't be too bad tomorrow, a lot of the schools are doing distance learning and the like. Just have to remember to check again in the morning in case there's a delay. . .night all!
Even with the snow outside, though, I had a pretty good day overall:
