Okay, Now THAT'S Better
Apr. 15th, 2022 11:44 pmNice quiet Friday at home, going nowhere, with arguably my biggest frustration being having to wrestle with a frozen banana still in the skin for my smoothie this morning. (It's such a pain to get the peel off in those instances!) Pretty productive day too:
1. Free Writing Day – work on whatever catches my fancy: Check/Substitution – I forgot for a moment that playing Fallout 4 today would necessarily mean writing up my adventures for the Playthrough Progression! So yeah, did that after supper and doing the write-up below. Victor has raised a relay tower; defused a tense stand-off at the Concord Drumlin Diner; brought Mutt back to live with Dogmeat; improved his guns a bit more; made himself a "mercenary belt" for more pocket space; killed some super mutants; gotten a bit lost and went the wrong way into a ghoul-invested flooded town on his way to Diamond City; and gotten scared half to death by some more super mutants exploding themselves and some wolves. But he is now FINALLY on the road to Diamond City – once he finds out what was going on in the back room of this veggie stand. XD
2. Keep up with YouTube Subs and start working on the Watch Later: Check – two from each tonight –
A) Started with the latest OXBox list: “7 Most Violent Shopkeepers You Don't Want to Steal From: Commenter Edition!” Yes, the comments have brought us a few more violent shopkeepers – though this time, despite the name, not all of them are triggered by shoplifting. Sure, the Kecleon who serve as shopkeepers in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon only reveal their true type-shifting, speedy-attacking powers if you try to steal from their shops, but some need you to actually attack them (like Andre the Blacksmith in Dark Souls – angry Santa holds a hell of a grudge!), while others pull out their best moves if you buy too much from them (like Renon from Castlevania 64, who becomes a boss fight after 30,000 gold worth of purchases – to be fair, that is a lot, and he IS a demon), while others might get pissed if you merely browse before trying to leave (Beedle from Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, who – thanks to having to pedal madly to keep his store afloat – is very annoyed if you add extra weight to his shop without even purchasing anything and drops you out a trapdoor, fortunately not to your actual doom). Basically, always treat video game shopkeepers with respect, watch your budget, and don’t be a looky-loo. Or an asshole.
B) Then it was over to some Anna Rudolf/Anna_Chess for a vicarious Call Me Kevin experience – a video about her playing Dead By Daylight with him! Though, to my surprise, it was NOT about her playing with him as the killer, either trying to outwit him or teaming up with him to troll their friends – instead, it was about Kevin’s own first time playing with her and friends as a SURVIVOR. You know, needing to get AWAY from the monster. The video featured two maps, the standard outdoor map and the Raccoon City map – though, interestingly, the first featured Nemesis from the Resident Evil games, while the second – actually set in an RE location – had a Japanese Oni monster instead. Most of Kevin’s time was spent panicking and running away from the monster as Anna shouted encouragement and instructed him to “loop” to help confuse the Killer and get to a safe spot. Though he did actually pull off some pretty damn smooth moves, to be honest – like managing to hide directly behind a tree just behind Nemesis when the monster started camping poor hooked Anna and thus help rescue her with their friends. Or doing some amazing work dodging and weaving around the Oni in the police station, with some sick vaults over the stair banisters before finally getting smashed and wasting a TON of the Killer’s time, allowing the others to repair generators. And both matches ended in all the survivors escaping, yay! :) Good times~ (though I still want to see Survivor Anna versus Killer Kevin XD)
C) From there it was into the Subs themselves for this week’s Fun With Shorts – “The Picture's The Thing” Part 1! The first chunk of a short on the printing of paper ads, in fact – it’s about how they make the etched plates that can stamp the images in a series of dots in up to four colors! The process itself is interesting, but the fact that it’s treating advertising as the premier form of communication is – well, Josh said it best in calling it “depressing.” At least we have him and his riffs to liven things up!
D) And finally, we had GrayStillPlays and Find Love – another terrible stick-figure puzzle game! This one was all about manipulating the environment around the sticks to make it so the guy stick got the girl stick – preferably without suffering a beatdown or a terrible death. Gray being Gray, he tried his best to find the beatdowns and terrible deaths. Like Guy Stick wanting to get with Girl Stick taking selfies – the correct solution is to shake the tree until worms come down and scare her into Guy Stick’s arms, but you can also take her phone, and she responds with the slap of ages. XD Or crossing a narrow but deep gap to get to Girl Stick strolling happily through the wood – you try to move the guy to the vine hanging conveniently from the tree, and he just drops like a stone. XD And later, the girl ends up hanging from that same tree when the vine disappears – try to save her directly, and you’ll BOTH fall to your doom. XD There’s also a few that are just weird – like Girl Stick rejecting Guy Stick’s attempt at proposing, and the solution is to click the diamond ring until you mysteriously uncover the key to a Ferrari, which she’s totally into. Or saving Girl Stick from drowning by stealing another guy’s surfboard – you EXPLICITLY LEAVE HIM TO DROWN. So yeah, you can imagine Gray had a lot of fun with this one. XD
3. Play Fallout 4 and move Victor on toward Diamond City: Check, though we did have a rather lengthy detour first – let me give you the deets:
11/19/2287 – picked up on the afternoon of this day, with me preparing to set up the usual “outhouse and shower” set-up that I build for all my settlements, both for immersion and because it gives Victor a convenient place to poop and have a shower. (Case in point, Victor actually got the “hey, you need the toilet” message WHILE building the outhouse). Oberland had enough steel for Victor to construct a simple outhouse, but NOT a shower. So he and Preston went exploring nearby to see if they could pick up a bit of steel.
Fortunately, right across the tracks was Relay Station 1DL-109, one of those towers you can raise to produce new radio signals for your Pip-Boy to pick up. And, better yet, there was a broken Protectron there! Victor picked up some steel from that and raised the satellite dishes – that produced two signals, the Boston Supply Beacon and a Distress Signal, though he couldn’t make heads-or-tails out of either of them. Still, good to have, and with steel in hand, it was back to Oberland to make the shower. . .
And then, back to the Red Rocket and Sanctuary, because a) they have a lot of supplies and I wanted Victor to do some crafting and b) I wanted to symbolically “drop off Mutt,” the random encounter dog I love so much and who was adopted in the fanfic land after Victor healed her. So it was back across the rail bridge to start heading back to where it all started. Decided to just go ahead and follow the railroad tracks for a while, which took Victor and Preston past Jalbert Brothers Disposal (which I had them sneak past as, if I recall my Jon LPs correctly, it’s full of super mutants) and a very radioactive train (I TRIED to take a sneaky look inside for good junk, but ended up falling and getting trapped – reloaded a (fortunately recent) save as Victor started getting sick from the radiation). From there they went by a freshly-dug grave for a raider, and an abandoned house with a swing out front (was worried it was that house with a bear inside at first, but fortunately not). They also came across some very unobservant bloodbug hatchlings and killed them –
And then I heard voices nearby, about “paying up.” Turning around, I realized we were near the one “working” Drumlin Diner, and the “Order Up” quest with Wolfgang and Trudy! Victor went by to investigate as Wolfgang and Trudy continued yelling at each other – Wolfgang told him to stay out of it, but Victor asking politely what was going on got him the story – Wolfgang sold Trudy’s son Patrick loads of Jet, Patrick now owes him money, Trudy is refusing to pay, violence is on the menu. However, Wolfgang was a reasonable sort and said he’d accept Victor talking her down. Victor was like “you shouldn’t have sold him the Jet, but also he shouldn’t have bought it – let me talk to Trudy, okay?” Before that, though, he needed to get some better clothing for Charisma purposes, so he raided Preston’s “backpack” – fortunately, there was a nice light (in terms of weight -- 1 instead of 3) checkered shirt and slacks combo, plus a nice hat, that all together gave him +3 to his Charisma in there. Left him overweight, but since I could quickly make him change back into his combat gear afterward, no biggie. He went in and talked to Trudy, who was upset about her son’s addiction, but Victor pointed out that paying Wolfgang defused this crisis with no one getting hurt –
And the Charisma gear worked! Trudy agreed but warned Wolfgang not to sell her son any more crap; Wolfgang agreed and gave Victor 100 caps for his trouble. I promptly had Victor sell him the drugs he’d picked up in his travels, because hey, he IS a chem dealer. XD Bought some ammo off him too. And then it was in to talk to Trudy and browse HER wares to keep it fair – she had both regular AND military-grade duct tape, which was nice, so Victor got that and some other junk, and sold her his spare 10mm pistol and a Coast Guard hat he’d found. XD Preston approved (“liked”) of all of this by the way – I guess he doesn’t consider Wolfgang as bad as a raider.
Anyway, from there it was back up through Concord to the Red Rocket! Victor stored away his magazines and spare holotapes, and did a little gun modding – I had him put an Advanced receiver on his 10mm, as it has tons of ammo, so I may as well keep it and get some decent damage off it. Exhaustion, however, forced him into bed at 9:44 PM.
11/20/2287 – Woke up shortly before 6 AM to a massive thunderstorm – Victor put a Long Light barrel on the 10mm, made some Radaway at the chem bench, then ran back to Sanctuary because I wanted to see about more backpack options and that’s where the backpack bench was. I added a Mercenary’s Belt to his outfit in slot 56, added a canteen and all the pouches to it, made it a nice dark green, and bumped carry weight up 30 pounds. He’s at 405 pounds now with all his pocketed gear and backpacks! :D And also Codsworth idolizes him for all this. XD Nice. Ended up spending most of the day there just doing some crafting – gathered the local crops to cook up a ton of stuff, pulled almost everything out of Preston’s inventory (since I’ll be dismissing him in Diamond City in favor of Piper, and he had lots of leather armor to scrap and other stuff I wanted to sell – I let him keep and wear his Patrolman Sunglasses, though XD), scrapped a bunch of leather armor, put away all the spare clothes except Victor’s Charisma gear (and took a moment to see what he looked like in the black vest and slacks), and generally just made sure everything was in order for the trip to Diamond City.
And then, at 1:39 PM in the afternoon in-game – they were off! Victor and Preston proceeded out of Sanctuary, down through the parking lot by Concord (which, uh, had some mines in it this time – Victor managed to successfully disarm and take one, but I left the other because Preston was getting worryingly close to it), across Starlight Drive-In, and – straight into some bloatflies. Ugh, nasty little shits. . .and then, when they reached the bridge by the Beantown Brewery, they ran into the remains of a super-mutant-versus-raiders fight – fortunately, the wounded mutants went down pretty well to Victor’s shotgun. They made it across the bridge and back to Oberland Station by 5:48 PM, and then I directed them over to the relay, over the bridge there (which is a random encounter spot, but just had an empty camp this time), across the dam/water-lock, and into the flooded area known as Forest Grove.
Which is when I checked my map and realized I’d gone the wrong way. *facepalm* And then, on deciding “well, may as well tag the location – and oooh, ammo!” Victor and Preston ended up attacked by ghouls, and Victor ended up dying. Whoops. Fortunately, I’d saved recently – I still tagged the location and grabbed the available ammo, but Victor and Preston then just snuck around the area and back across the dam, avoiding trouble.
And then they ran into some very angry squirrels once they were on the right side of the bridge again. *shakehead* On the plus side, I learned that the “doubled meat” thing DOES apply to mod-added animals – got double squirrel bits off those squirrels! Om nom nom. . . Anyway, Victor and Preston found their way over to a road leading under a bridge, where they found a settler camped out who begged for some water. Victor, who has plenty of purified water, handed some over, to her gratitude and Preston’s approval. They continued on their way, along the road and toward a veggie stand –
And then there was a massive explosion just to the side, with the trademark Super Mutant Suicider roar. My first thought was “PRESTON!” but nope, he was okay – what had ACTUALLY happened is we’d passed by the Suicider making a very FINAL stand with his brothers against some feral wolves. *shrug* Grabbed the wolf meat and the good ammo off the mutants, then grabbed some veggies from the veggie place and camped out in front of it at 9:15 PM.
So yeah, pretty solid two hours worth of gameplay! I have ended with them having woken up in front of the veggie place bright and early on 11/21/2287 – next stop, Boston proper and Diamond City! :D
4. Work on tumblr drafts: Another partial check – while I didn’t get any drafting done on Victor Luvs Alice, I did add something to reblog later to said drafts from trawling my followed tags. And I’ve got three in the queue for tomorrow on Valice Multiverse. It’s the little things!
5. Get in a workout: Check – another night on the bike, but as I’m planning to take tomorrow off, didn’t start the next Oxventure stream. Instead, I watched B. Dylan Hollis TikTok compilations. XD What, he’s funny! And it was more than just the old recipes he’s famous for too – there were a number about him and his terrible old Chevy (which seems ready to fall apart at any second in these videos), him complaining about how cold Wyoming is, and him showing off his piano-playing and accordion-playing skills. XD Worse ways to spend a workout, certainly!
Additionally:
-->More beanbags today, despite some wind – middle game turned into “two of us keep tying each other” slog, but eventually we got through three rounds! I got 3-2-W; Dad W-W-2; Mom 2-3-3. At least some good throws on the last game got me the win there!
Not too shabby at all, no. :) Though hopefully I can pick it up with the drafts tomorrow. . .here, let's set out the Saturday to-do list:
1. Free Writing Day – work on whatever catches my fancy
2. Keep up with YouTube Subs and at least Plumbella in the WL
3. Play Sims 4 and get through at least another day with Smiler Always
4. Work on tumblr drafts
As stated above, break day from workout, yaaay~ We'll see how it all turns out tomorrow -- night all!
