Like, it wasn't absurdly busy, but it was certainly busy enough:

Work – In keeping with what I just said above, it was a fairly busy end of the work week today for me:

A) After answering a couple of e-mails (and sending one out to get a “stuck” batch posted), I spent pretty much the entire morning working on the GL, since we had a ton of credit card gifts posted yesterday that meant I had to spend a lot of time adding up and checking off numbers over multiple days – I only stopped once to help my coworker with one credit card gift she was struggling a bit with (doing a down payment on a pledge – she didn’t realize that you could do the pledge and down payment in the same batch)

B) I then contacted two people who’d had trouble making their pledges over the phone with us before because of the credit card nonsense, because one of our contacts there had FINALLY fixed the issues stopping the pledges from going through (namely, shutting off a setting preventing payments past the end of the year, and turning on a setting allowing quarterly schedules) – eventually got both their pledges on, which was a nice relief

C) I then spent some time cleaning up my e-mail inbox before checking for any more missing payments, and sending the handful I found to our credit card people to get them posted (it seems the problem that was keeping them from posting HAS been fixed, but the ones I found were all from batches posted BEFORE I alerted people to the problem, so…)

D) And I ended the day helping my coworker contact a lady with two recurring gifts (she thought she had to renew the gift like a pledge and asked us to keep the larger one) and doing a few reversals (like applying someone’s overpayment from last year to their newly-uploaded 2026 pledge)

Nothing too exciting, I suppose, but it definitely kept me busy all day long! At least the commutes weren’t too bad...and now it is the weekend, yay. Hopefully it’ll be a decent one!

To-Do List

1. Get in a workout: Check – my final night on the bike this week saw me pedaling my way through –

A) The end of “Baldur's Gate 3 Cast play D&D #1 | High Rollers Presents: Shadows of Athkatla!” The final twenty-odd minutes featured the following:

I. Astarion, Karlach, Lae’zel, and Shadowheart, walking through the River District to their respective destinations (The Docks for A&K, the Waukeen’s Promenade market for L&S), pausing for a moment as they spotted a huge crowd in front of a giant stone stage, with three cowled and masked wizards atop it. The citizenry were up in arms about mysterious abductions, missing family members, and criminals running rampant, but the wizards were having none of it, with the guy in charge – sporting a fancy gold mask and a red robe – informing them that they were very busy with various tasks for the merchant houses and that they would be looking into the disappearances when they got a chance. In the meantime, the people were safe and should go about their business and not form mobs, or else. A little magical display got the crowd to disperse, grumbling, and the wizards themselves teleported away shortly thereafter. (As Wyll and Gale didn’t get to see this, lingering by the city gates as they were, Mark the DM instead had them notice various posters for missing people and thinkpieces on the abductions and if the city was safe anymore or not around the general area. Don’t want to leave the newbies out of the loop!)

II. Astarion, spotting a well-dressed upper-middle-class merchant in the crowd as it began to disperse, taking one point of fire damage to bump Karlach into the guy so he could then pretend to be a helpful fellow citizen and steal something while “offering assistance.” XD An excellent Sleight-Of-Hand roll saw him make off with the guy’s silk purse while pretending to make sure the “awful, uncouth tiefling” hadn’t ruined his clothes –

And not only was the man – one Brennan Quint – grateful for the help, he was also impressed with Astarion’s clothes, assuming him to be a fellow man of means! Astarion thus bullshitted him that his outfit was all the way from Neverwinter (after establishing that the guy knew what was what in Baldur’s Gate), and Brennan told him that there was a fashion show happening that weekend at the temple of Sune, and that he should pop in. Astarion said he might, doing his best to be charming – his Persuasion roll was middling, but the guy found Astarion interesting enough that he wouldn’t mind seeing him again. Brennan then headed off on his own business, and Astarion counted the money in the purse to find 20 gold –

Prompting Karlach, who’d finally realized what that bump had been for, to ask for half. And then just stare at Astarion as he attempted to claim it was bribe money until he finally gave her ten coin. XD Don’t upset the barbarians, guys – they will LOOM until they get their way!

III. And Shadowheart and Lae’zel proceeding to the massive open-air market (built out of what used to be an old fighting arena) and, after agreeing that those wizards they’d seen were likely to be behind the horrible dark magic assaulting Tav, making their way to the back of the market to find a very strange shop – the Adventurer’s Mart, an incongruously-modern-looking store with racks of discount healing potions, “true steel” swords, and other such bullshit, with a gnome sitting at the cash register reading an openly-pornographic book and an imp on the door going “BING BONG!” every time he opened it for a new customer. Shadowheart and Lae’zel attempted to question the imp to learn what it knew – Lae’zel intimidating the poor thing while Shadowheart did her best to charm it –

But, well, as it turned out, the imp didn’t speak any Common beyond “BING BONG!” and “No” – just Infernal. He still managed to convey that he didn’t know much, and they’d have better luck talking to the gnome shopkeeper – Lae’zel thus went in to interrogate the guy while Shadowheart comforted the imp (who’d been quite scared by Lae’zel) and giving him a guy. The gnome shopkeeper initially misunderstood Lae’zel’s questions about where to find “dark magic,” trying to point her to a specific aisle, then asking if she was looking for someone to cast it – cue Lae’zel pulling her sword and breaking out the intimidation because she was fucking DONE with all this. XD Devora gleefully rolled an Intimidation roll with Advantage, and while she only ended up getting a 10, it was enough to frighten the gnome at least a little. Lae’zel then explained the situation a little better – namely, that their companion Tav was being attacked by dark magic originating from within the city, and while Lae’zel wasn’t that keen on saving them, the party really did need them to help get the tadpoles out of their heads, so they had to figure out who was attacking them. Shadowheart wandered over as the gnome explained that he didn’t know much about this sort of thing – he was a very minor mage, did enchanted items – but that the Cowled Wizards in the government district probably would –

But then admitted that they’d been very busy lately and weren’t actually receiving visitors. And then talked them into buying tickets for the “Bhaalspawn Experience: A Narrative Experience and Adventure” guided tour through the old laboratories of Jon Irenicus (the main villain of Baldur’s Gate II) because, well, Jon had been a truly awful man and maybe they’d be able to learn something about dark magic there. Lae’zel grumpily admitted that they might find something down there, but insisted that the experience be cut down from an hour to thirty minutes (insisting she wouldn’t be reading any of the plaques OR going down the fun slide at the end), while Shadowheart talked the shopkeeper into letting them both go in for the price of one ticket (which he agreed to after another glance at Lae’zel). And so they prepared to go on their Experience –
With the imp, Bing Bong, who had apparently never let go of Shadowheart and was now just clinging to her. XD I guess he sort of counts as a summon? :p

And that was the end of Part I! With everyone assuring Mark that they’d had fun and were glad to be playing. :) Next week, as previously stated, we’ll watch Part II and see how this side quest concludes! Happily, I hope…

B) And all of “The Sims 4 Just Crossed Another Line... (Marketplace)” by onlyabidoang! I haven’t really been watching any Sims 4 videos since I dropped the game, but I saw that in my Recommendeds when I first booted up YouTube on the TV, and decided that I wanted to check it out. Basically, there’s a new “Marketplace” update coming to The Sims 4 later this month, which is going to add something akin to the Sims 3 Store to the game, offering both official EA content and curated “Maker” content (AKA stuff made by CC creators who sign up for the program) that can be bought with the new virtual currency “Moolah.” Which is, itself, naturally bought with real money. And Abi –

Was noooot exactly happy about this update. Mostly because he remembered the Sims 3 Store being one of the WORST THINGS about that game. And from what he could see, the Marketplace was going to be even worse. He was willing to begrudgingly admit that yes, this was probably a boon to console players (who would never get a chance to put any custom content in their games otherwise), and that EA was compensating the Makers creating much of the content – but he also stressed that it wasn’t really fair that console players would have to PAY to get their CC (and wouldn’t even get it at the same time as PC players anyway, as the update would be rolled out later for them), and that the Makers were only getting 30% of the revenue from their creations, with EA getting the other 70%. Add in that the Marketplace was going to be shoving itself in people’s faces on the opening screen (meaning you couldn’t get away from it even if you wanted to); that anything a Maker made for the Marketplace could not be offered anywhere else (though at least EA allowed that such creators could continue to offer DIFFERENT pieces of CC/mods on other platforms); that Moolah could not be obtained during regular gameplay, it had to be bought with real money, and it could not be refunded, traded, or gifted once bought; and that this all seemed to confirm the rumors that EA was getting out of the “making dedicated DLC packs” game (though maybe it’s about time they did – did you know this game has 115 pieces of DLC? And that it would cost $1,627.88 to buy them all?) and moving to a full-on microtransactions model, and – yeah. Abi was quite disappointed in EA for pulling this shit. Not surprised, just – disappointed. *sigh* You and me both, buddy. I feel like I dropped this game at just the right time now.

2. Continue editing Chapter 4 of “The Van Dort Vacancy”: Check – finished off the chapter tonight, with the final page or so featuring:

A) Victor telling Smiler “Thanks, but I have to learn to stand on my own two feet” in regards to Smiler’s mostly-joking comment about their parents would happily take Victor in, before adding that he’d be happy to stop by again for eggy toast; Smiler assured him that they’d be happy to have him

B) Smiler getting the blanket squashed flat enough to fit into the carpet bag, then asking Victor what he intended to do with the mask – and Victor, after briefly contemplating just snapping the stupid thing in half and leaving it on his parents as a sort of “fuck your parties and your wealth and everything” message, remembering Elder Gutknecht and his offer to train him, and instead just ripping the feathers off and wiping away the dust (he wanted to pry off the beads, but he couldn’t get his nails under them). Alice initially thought he was succumbing to the urge to destroy it, but Victor explained that he was cleaning it up to take with him...and when Smiler was like “why?” stating that, “well, the one thing every Whisper needs is a spirit mask, isn’t it?”

C) Smiler gleefully declaring “yes it is!!” and running over to hug Victor because they were so happy that he had changed his mind and decided to follow his dream, while Alice groaned (while trying to fight off a smile) that Smiler was going to be insufferable now and told Victor all about how she’d done her best to talk Smiler out of trying to get him to come live with them and become a Whisper because they had to respect his choice – “And now look at you, doing everything they want without them even saying a word!” Victor assured her that he wanted it all too, and Smiler teased her that she’d still technically won, as they were respecting Victor’s choices – it was just he was not making the choices they’d wanted him to make anyway. XD

D) Victor eventually reminding Smiler that he did still want to find his slug stories, and the trio getting back once more to the important business of getting Victor all packed up and ready to go (with Victor leaving the scraggly feathers from the mask on his pillow as a lesser version of the “fuck you” he’d contemplated before). The chapter ended with Victor admitting that it felt odd to look around the room and know it was the last time he’d ever see it – Alice said that was understandable, as he must be pretty attached to it (far more attached than she was to her room in Houndsditch), and Smiler said it was fine to feel weird, but Victor had to remember that he was moving into a better, happier life. Victor took that to heart and, after one last look around, walked straight out the door, ready to get the hell out of there.

Yay! :D We’ll see about getting final edits done on this sucker next week!

3. Watch something on YouTube: No check – once again, just didn’t have the time, especially since tonight WAS Game Night. If you’re curious, we played Cross Clues, which is a game where you set up a “grid” of numbers and letters, each with a word attached (like, column 1 might have the word “dog” and row C might have the word “firefighter”), and each player picks cards with certain coordinates on them. You then have to say a one-word clue so the other players can guess which pairs of words your card corresponds to (for example, if you have the card for C1, you can say “Dalmatian”). If they get it right, you put the card in the correct place on the grid; if not, you set it aside. The goal is to fill the grid up with as many cards as possible. My parents kind of struggled with the game a bit (Dad had trouble coming up with clues and kept guessing stuff that was already on the table, while Mom twice said the coordinates on her card instead of her clue), but we had fun regardless! But yeah, didn’t leave any time for watching a video – at least, not if I wanted to write. And, as you can guess from the above, I did want to write. Hopefully I can fit in at least the OXBox list video from this week tomorrow!

4. Get my tumblr queues sorted: N/A, as it has been for most of this week. At least tomorrow I should be able to get some work done on some of my Victor Luvs Alice (N Smiler) drafts!

Other: It was Bandcamp Friday again today, so I went ahead and spent about six bucks on a few songs from OK Go! Very pleased to find “the wild music videos” band on the platform, and even more pleased to find my three favorite songs from them – “Upside Down and Inside Out,” “Obsession,” and “The One Moment” – very easily. So now I have those in my collection, and I have successfully supported a band I like. Yay. :)

*nods* Not a bad Friday, honestly. Very glad I was able to take advantage of the Bandcamp Friday, and get Chapter 4 of "The Van Dort Vacancy" done. :D But now it is definitely time for me to head to bed. Tomorrow, goals include working on at least one of my drafts over on Victor Luvs Alice (N Smiler); playing some more Baldur's Gate III (gotta loot those slain harpies, at least); and watching whatever videos I can fit into my schedule. *nods* Seems reasonable for a non-cleaning Saturday. Night all!
