Today is also a day of firsts -- the first time travel experiment ever, the first time travel experiment involving a human, the first time Doc died--
-D: Hey!-
It's true! And, after the mess in the first movie is fixed, we have the first alternate reality created by misuse of time travel thanks to Biff Tannen courtesy of the sequel.
-M: I gotta say, most of those are pretty sucky firsts.-
We know, Marty, we know.
Anyway, been a pretty good day for me. I watched Part II this afternoon, which was nice. Ahh, Backie goodness. I also updated revison_doc and did Dee's birthday party! So yes, a lot of today was me busy talking to myself. :p
-VD: I'm sure Gigs will reassure you it's a sign of intelligence.-
*snrk* I also have a drabbles88 for you -- I couldn't post it on Doc's birthday, so I'll present it to you now:
12. Enemies
This was – horrible.
Verne sat on the hood of his DeLorean, staring up at the night sky. It was quiet at the moment – no sonic booms from departing or arriving time machines, no ripples as history was changed again and again. They’d all declared a – Verne supposed it was a “truce” – for the night, taking some time to get some much-needed rest.
Not that Verne was getting any. His mind was way too keyed up. The adrenaline that had been surging throughout his system all day hadn’t let up yet, and he didn’t think it would for a long time. Not until this mess was resolved.
He sighed and looked down. Sleeping on the ground was Martin McFly III – the spitting image of his grandfather, only with green eyes instead of blue and maybe an inch or two extra in height. Inside the car was Jules McFly, who looked a bit more like his grandmother with his redder hair and brown eyes. Both good kids, with Marty III hoping to become the first classical musician in his family, and Jules wanting to become an artist. They could have been brothers –
If Marty III didn’t remember his grandfather breaking his hand in an auto accident, and Jules didn’t remember his grandfather avoiding that same accident.
It wasn’t fair. It simply wasn’t fair. Neither of these two were bad people. For that matter, neither was Electra McFly. Her only crime had been being born in the timeline his father had dubbed 1985-A. Why was it only one of them could survive if they sorted out this whole tangled mess?
And what about Marlin Berry? He was a decent guy. Verne actually liked him a lot. But the guy’s timeline was one where Clara Clayton – Verne’s mother – had been killed falling over the edge of the ravine. If Verne wanted to remain in existence, Marlin had to go. And there was still Clara Wilson, and Clay Strickland, and Darlene Needles – and hell, even the Tannens! That shocked him – he was actually feeling sorry for Tannens! It was just something about the way Tiffany’s face had fallen, the way Buffy had choked out, “I always wanted a sister. . . .”
Why had their paths crossed? What force had made them meet the people whose existences they were trying to undo? What kind of sick game was this, where there could be only one – and that one was left with the knowledge he’d painfully erased people who’d done nothing wrong, who were just trying to survive?
Maybe it would have been better if his father had never invented time travel at all. . . .
Yeah, this story's a barrel of angst. And it's about a freaking CARD GAME.
-HD: *sulky* You can inject angst into anything, can't you?-
Well, the game itself is kinda sad when you think about it. You're literally seeking to erase the other players from existence.
Anyway, as you've probably guessed, this fic is based off the recently-released BTTF Card Game by Looney Labs. I suppose I got to thinking about this idea when I did my Fridge Horror post on it -- about how you're erasing everyone else from existence, even people who should be able to coexist with you. I got to wondering -- what would happen if the kids mentioned all MET one another? And worse, started discovering they all LIKED one another? The result was this. My vague idea is that, during the timeline changes, the various people in their various time machines start accidentally running into each other, and in comparing notes, realize they're different-reality "brothers and sisters." For the record, I picture most everyone as being around 17 to 19. There's also two distinct camps -- the "Baddies" (both Tannens, Clay Strickland, and Darlene Needles) and the "Goodies" (everybody else). And, as hinted in the story, everyone's starting to feel for everyone else -- the two Tannen girls always wanted siblings, Marty thinks Jules and Electra would have made awesome cousins, at the very least, Marlin and Verne have started to bond. . . . Verne's last thought about how it would have been better for there to be no time travel is a reference to how you end the game. Of course, without time travel, almost none of these kids would exist, so. . . .
-M2: That's dark.-
-VuM: Hang on, almost none?-
I'm thinking Marty McFly III MIGHT squeak in. Though he probably wouldn't exist in the form he takes in the game, so maybe it's a moot point. Anyway, it seemed appropriate to post because of the date, so -- yes, enjoy your angst.
And now, while I'm here, a bit of babbling on the Telltale game and the latest news on that. I hadn't actually watched the third video/blog when I posted the link yesterday, so it came as a bit of a surprise to me to see Young Emmett Brown. I'm a little worried -- yo, Telltale, he's BLOND -- but I'm doing my best to remain optimistic. Which is really helped by the line at the end of the last video:
Marty: The usual? You lead a pretty unusual life, Doc.
Doc: It's an unusual universe, Marty.
*giggle* So true. Oh, BTTF, you are so great. *fingers crossed for the game*
