-D: What the-?-
Gypsy Robinson's acting up again.
-D: Ah. *smirk* She is going to be my girlfriend in later stories, you should expect her having a mind of her own.-
Well, I didn't plan on her being your girlfriend later. . . .
Since most of you readers are probably lost by this point, I'll bring you up to speed:
2002: While writing "V.D.," I went a tad in-joke crazy. I decided that anybody who came back from the grave needed some doctors around to look after him. So I invented Dr. John Conner, a regular doctor, and Dr. Gypsy Sol Robinson, a psychologist. Gypsy was an in-joke based on one of my favorite TV shows, "Mystery Science Theater 3000." Gypsy was the name of one of the robot characters on the show. It was set on the Satellite of Love, aka the SOL. And the first main human character was Joel Robinson. Having had my fun, I dismissed her.
2003: I wrote "Dark Half." Since Marty was struggling with a mental condition, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (as suggested by my editor), he had to see a shrink. Ta-da, look who's back. She dragged Dr. Adams from "World of Darkness" with her too. I wrote them both in -- Glenda Adams her usual perky/bitchy self, Gypsy more calm and better-suited to the job. Gypsy also got her first sort of description -- green eyes.
2004: Now she's getting troublesome. I'd been working on a variation of the same story for a while now, my "Untitled" piece (which, incidentally, now has a title: "Definition of a Friend"). I'd rewritten it twice, and the darn thing just wasn't clicking right. My main plotline -- Emily's best friend Holly discovers a secret about the boys and their link -- was working okay, but the plot seemed to be limping along. I needed more tension, something to throw a monkey-wrench into the works. I decided that the revelation should come an an inconvient time for Doc -- namely, when he's discovering he's in love with someone. But I didn't know who to make the girlfriend for Doc.
And then -- guess who.
That's right, Gypsy came back, with the intention of becoming Doc's significant other. I was a little startled, but then I saw some merit in her stance. Doc is generally known as the town crazy man in fan fiction -- how ironic for him to fall for a psychologist! This version of DoaF clicked, and Gypsy joined the main cast -- late (her real debut is in 1989), but she joined it. I plotted out her age and a bit of backstory for her.
Now, a few nights ago, I started planning out some stuff for another future story, in which Gypsy introduces Doc to her parents. Unfortunately, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson are a bit Puritanical in their outlook -- they're very proud of their daughter, but they're not too thrilled about her love life. (For Gypsy's mom, think Marie from "Everybody Loves Raymond" -- or, even better, if you get BBC/BBCAmerica, Ella (Janet's mum) from "My Hero.") I was doing the voices when Mrs. Robinson called Gypsy by her full name:
Gypsy Rachel Robinson.
Not Gypsy Sol Robinson. Gypsy Rachel Robinson.
So, you see, not only has Gypsy become more than just an in-joke character, she's actually making some of the in-joke go away! What do you do with a character like that?!
-M: *giggling* Sounds like you have to put her back in her place.-
I can't. Rachel sounds right. -.- Damn characters and their good ideas. . . .
