Monday At The Zoo
Sep. 23rd, 2024 11:51 pmSpent a nice Monday out and about today -- let me tell you all about it:
Southwick Zoo: I’m happy to report that we ended up having a very good day over at the zoo! :) The weather wasn’t the best (cloudy and rather chilly, though at least it never rained), and lunch wasn’t exactly spectacular (most of the restaurants and food stalls were closed, so we had to get middling wraps, a hot dog, mac & cheese, and chips from the one open deli – though I did also snag a very nice piece of s’mores fudge for dessert tonight), but we were still able to spend about four hours wandering around looking at the animals and participating in whatever activities were still open. Highlights of the trip included –
A) Seeing the zoo all decorated for a Halloween-themed event they’ll be running starting later in the month, with loads of (admittedly fake) pumpkins around carved with various designs – classic faces; famous cartoon characters; the solar system (with Pluto represented by the Disney dog XD); multiple pumpkin bits arranged to form various animals; a winter scene with pumpkin snowmen and penguins, running from a spooky pumpkin (rather Calvin & Hobbes-esque); and even Important Boston Stuff (like notable events from history, notable places, and notable sports team logos). Something a little extra-special to look at – AND it gave us an idea for our own Halloween decorating. Namely, instead of using the classic fake spiderweb (which is hard to clean up and dangerous to wildlife), we’re gonna make fake spiderweb using cheesecloth with holes cut in. :) Now we just have to find the rest of our damn decorations…
B) Going into the petting zoo and petting some goats and some alpacas hanging out in the same area. Couldn’t feed them, as per the zoo’s instructions (I think too many people have been giving the animals food they shouldn’t have), but they were still nice to pet!
C) Watching a giraffe in the giraffe enclosure lean over some rocks near the fence and desperately use its tongue to pick up a fallen leaf from the trees nearby to snack on – and then realize “hey, this leaf isn’t a good leaf” as it started chewing XD Like, seriously, this giraffe seemed genuinely disappointed in its life choices afterward. Teach you not to eat your regular feed!
D) Seeing a bunch of baby monkeys across those exhibits, including one little fellow that was only a month old, awww :) Very cute!
E) Seeing one of the chimpanzees in their enclosure wandering around with a blanket over it – like, yeah, you do what you need to to keep warm today! XD
F) Going on the faux-train ride (there’s no track, instead the “train” just drives along a road on regular tires) around the pond in the North American exhibit and seeing a bunch of elk, including one who had a pine branch stuck to him and was rubbing up on stuff to try and get it off, poor guy. XD Hopefully he got it off eventually!
G) Going up on the “Skyfari” ride (you know, one of those suspended chair ride things that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the some of the zoo exhibits) – though, hilariously, Mom, who specifically paid to get the experience, ended up terrified because she’d forgotten how high up it was. Now, granted, it IS one of those rides where your feet just dangle, and the chair DID start swaying a bit as we went around some corners, but – still. XD She was fine in the end, though, and I enjoyed the look at the zoo from the air!
H) And hitting the parakeet aviary and buying a couple of seed sticks each to feed them – and let me tell you, those parakeets get VERY intent on eating their seed sticks. Mom and I both ended up with multiple parakeets on us at a couple of points, with some of them squabbling over who got to eat the seeds off the stick. I also had to deal with a parakeet nipping at my fingers once the stick was cleaned off, and another pooping on me. But it was still fun!
So yeah, plenty of good experiences today. And I even got a souvenir from the gift shop – a new hoodie! My old Martha’s Vineyard one bit the dust yesterday (the zipper pull literally just snapped in half when I tried to close it up), so I ended up replacing it today with a nice purple one featuring the zoo’s logo. :) And, on the way home, not only did I get a chocolate milk when my parents stopped at a gas station for coffee, we took the long way around so they could show me a house they’d seen recently that was absolutely DECKED OUT in giant Halloween decorations. Like, this person had killer clowns, giant skeletons (both human and dog), demons, vampires, the works. It was very cool. XD So yeah – good day out!
Tumblr: Just Victor Luvs Alice to worry about today, and while I didn’t get anything done in the drafts (which is unsurprising, given how I spent the majority of the day away from my computer), I did make a couple of posts this evening about my trip to the zoo – one with pictures of some of the animals we saw, plus me posing in a wanted poster standee and a pumpkin carved with the USS Constitution, and one with a short video featuring that giraffe who tried to eat a leaf that fell into its exhibit and regretted it. :) So if you’d like some visuals of my trip, you can go over there!
YouTube: Got to it late (unsurprisingly), but I did get all three videos in the Subs watched, plus one bonus –
A) First up, we had a surprise double-update from Josh Way (which leads me to believe he meant to post one of these videos last Thursday and forgot) –
I. “RAW TAKE: The Substance Review (+ new podcast feed!)” – Josh talks about The Substance, a horror-comedy about an aging exercise show star who, in an attempt to keep her job despite the efforts of an executive to replace her with new hotness, undergoes some sort of procedure involving the titular “substance” to make a new, hot version of herself – and shenanigans and gore ensue! Josh was like “everyone says this is an amazing, crazy, must-see movie, and I agree if you’re into the grossness of these kinds of movies, but I personally feel it’s a bit TOO over the top in spots – some things could have been toned down. Still recommend it, though.” Me, personally, I thought it sounded like another variation on the old “Jekyll & Hyde” formula, but if you like that kind of thing, maybe that’s a recommendation! Oh, and as per the title, Josh also quickly told everyone that’s he’s got a new podcast feed where the audio from all these reviews is going up – he’s got some actual episodes planned in the future, and he might be doing “spoiler talk” stuff over there from now on, we’ll see. He is diversifying his portfolio and we love that for him.
II. “SCREEN TIME: The Killer’s Game Review” – Josh talks about The Killer’s Game, a movie about an assassin with a heart of gold who tries to get out of the game to go have a life with his new ballet love, but ends up fighting against all these other gimmicky assassins John Wick-style instead. Also there is a sitcom plot about thinking you’ve been diagnosed with a terminal disease, making a bunch of rash decisions, and then learning you’re not dying and your decisions will have consequences smashed in there somehow. Josh’s opinion was “this is an extremely mid movie that stars an excellent actor but can’t decide if it wants to be serious or silly and really is one of the lesser John Wick knock-offs out there,” and mine was “did you HAVE to bring back your opening titles for this, they always come on so loud.” XD So yeah – this one doesn’t sound worth it, folks! Just go watch Keanu Reeves kick ass, you know you want to.
B) Second, we had the GrayStillPlays video of the day – “When you end everyone's life to help the bro,” aka Gray plays Help The Bro! This is one of those “pick between two options to advance the plot” games, where you play as a rich bro who goes to a nightclub (after using a gun to spray the bouncer with cash), falls in love with a waitress (after being a douchebag to her and tripping her when she refused his offer to take her back to his hotel), foils a kidnapping plot (by first using a lightsaber to fight the guy, then using a magnet to take his knife so his love interest can kick him to the moon), takes her home and romances her (which does NOT involve creating a path of candles to his sexy sexy body, because that sets off the fire suppression system, but DOES involve turning off the lights so he can join her in the shower), gets yelled at by his surprise wife (and asking her to forgive him for cheating is NOT the right answer), goes to the park with his waitress love and convinces her to give him another chance (by making a heart with seeds for pigeons to eat), and finally tries to take her to the beach via train, only to end up getting gassed by the kidnapper again, roll out the doors to escape the gas, and having to chase the train on a boar. Before fighting the kidnapper on top of the train and pretending to plead for his life so the kidnapper will be swept away by a billboard. All with the most Google Translate dialogue and goofiest over-the-top facial expressions you have ever seen in your life. Gray delighted in just how utterly ridiculous it was and how many times the worst answer was the right one, as you might imagine. XD Perhaps one day we will get a follow-up with more horrible adventures of the Bro!
C) And finally, because it is actually the anniversary of the North American release of Corpse Bride, I wanted to get in at least one CB clip, so I went looking and settled on “The Vow || Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE ||” by แดง, which is the part near the end where Victor and Emily nearly exchange vows – only for Emily to spot the heartbroken watching Victoria and realize that she’s stealing another bride’s dreams just like hers were stolen when she was murdered, and reunite her and Victor. Sweet scene as always, and a good choice for the anniversary, I feel.
Workout: Hopped on the bike after we got home from the zoo, pedaling my way through another half-hour of “The finale of the Every Life Stage Challenge! - Part 8” by James Turner! And it’s increasingly looking like the reason this episode is so long is because James simply WILL NOT REST until the house is fully renovated and actually looks like a proper home that nine Sims might actually want to live in. XD And it is coming along pretty nicely, honestly – in this particular chunklet, James managed to –
A) Mostly finish off Pablo’s little upstairs apartment, complete with a small kitchenette with countertop oven and two-seater table; a little sitting area beside the stairs with a couch and TV; a bedroom with attached wardrobe; and the standard blue bathroom (James WANTED to make it avocado-colored, but didn’t have the right-colored tub). He still needs some workout equipment on his balcony and a little desk in the corner of the kitchen/sitting room, but it’s a nice, livable space, at least!
B) Update the greenhouse with proper stone flooring, some planters for the roses and strawberries that were previously out in the backyard (he went ahead and just sold the daisies he planted next to them, since they weren’t a high-ticket harvestable and thus wouldn’t make him lots and lots of money), and a bunch of decorative plants and tables and shelves and stuff to fill in gaps between plants and make it LOOK like there was more being grown in there than there actually was. XD It did look very nice, though, I gotta say. Greenhouses can be tricky to make look good, as I well know!
C) Expand and update the kitchen to a more modern style using the Home Chef Hustle Stuff – it’s still rather narrow, but it’s a lot longer with a bunch more counter space and nicer appliances and counters and stuff. Plus a side table for odds and ends and that family planner board from Parenthood, which it really feels like this family should have, yes! Eight kids means you need all the help planning you can get. XD
D) Add some hedges and a little covered walkway section to the front of the house to hide some weirdness with his windows looking into the kitchen (he had to change them to fit the new style, and there was some detailing on the new ones that he wasn’t crazy about) – which, he was actually really pleased with, as he felt the covered “carport” area in particular really suited the front of the house, and added more protection for Sims coming up the front walk when it rained.
E) Update all the doors and archways on the first floor to a more modern style (the Seasons type with the chunky top bit) to match the fact that a lot of the furnishings/rooms were looking more modern. He decided he liked the look of the more old-fashioned arches and doors on the second floor, though – fit Pablo’s Cosmolux/Mid-Century Modern and Krystoff’s French Country themes a lot better!
F) And get a start on the new basement movie room – after deciding he didn’t like stacking the stairs up and down in the hallway, he instead made a special basement stairwell in the kitchen and started planning out the room from there. I left it with him trying to figure out his vision in a way that was feasible with their budget (which involved making the walls down there SUPER tall and using platforms to make sure the stairs didn’t look absurdly long) – however, his attempts at building down there are screwing up the rest of the house in odd ways (popping off the curtains in KRYSTOFF’S second-story apartment, for one), so we’ll see how things go and if James can make it look the way he wants it to look!
So yeah – looootta building this episode! I guess, though, that there isn’t much to do with the family (the only tasks that have to be done are Semaj’s two elder tasks, “settle down with Nalani” and “throw a terrifyingly-huge family reunion”), so we might as well make sure that the house gets finished for the grand finale. :p As for stuff happening in Live Mode, it’s pretty much all been centered around making money – Krystoff has moved on from painting on an easel to using the digital tablet, as it takes much less time to create art on that thing; Pablo has been doing well in his job, and has gotten a promotion to Mascot; and Semaj has been tending his garden (the crystal tree finally fully matured, so now he has crystals to sell along with his strawberries) and making sure to complete all of his tasks for work (Dreaming Big on the basketball hoop to improve his Fitness; doing action scenes with Vivienne in the kitchen; and inviting his costars around to do some socializing). Oh, and the kids are basically just doing their own things, though James is making sure they do decently in school – keeping up on their homework and doing their school projects and whatnot. *shrug* Just general daily life stuff! We’ll see if things get more interesting as the episode goes on – as stated above, the gang DOES have to throw a family reunion before the episode is done...
So yeah -- can't complain about my Monday off! :) (Well, okay, I can complain a LITTLE about how chilly I was at the zoo, but that was my own fault for not realizing I'd need a thicker hoodie -- and I got one of those at the end of the day, sooo...) And now I'm just going to bum around for a while before hitting the sheets at a halfway-decent time so I can get up at a halfway-decent time tomorrow. Plans for tomorrow include finishing up that Multifandom Tiny Town Occults post on Victor Luvs Alice (need for Wednesday), along with seeing if I can get any other posts started; getting some writing done (not sure yet if I'm going with Londerland Bloodlines or Valicer In The Dark); seeing if I can clear out my Watch Later list as well as keep up with my Subs on YouTube; and getting in a workout. I might also try to play some Sims 4 tomorrow, but that's not a guarantee, as Mom wants to watch The Blues Brothers tomorrow (after realizing I've never seen it) with lunch, and I don't know if it's gonna be split between lunch and supper or what. We'll see what happens! Night all!
