Happy Birthday Alice!
May. 4th, 2021 11:19 pmUnfortunately, it was a bit of a stressful day at work for me -- not so much actual work-wise (I had like a couple of big things to take care of, then just general maintenance), but in terms of coworker annoyance. . .yeah, everyone's being super-chatty and it's irritating the hell out of me. If only because it sometimes makes me feel like I'm the only one really WORKING. *sigh* I recognize this is probably largely a "me" problem, but still.
On the plus side -- had my cupcake, gave my dolls their party hats for the day, and even finally got my iPad to connect to my computer so I could post a picture of said dolls in their party hats with the cupcake to my tumblr. Also reread some favorite Alice fanfic, and looked at some related Fallout 4 mods on Nexus Mods (someone has done a really nice version of the Vorpal Blade). And, of course, there was the to-do list:
1. Get in a workout: Check – back on the bike, but NOT back with “Nuka-World Level One Survival” today. Since I was between episodes, and it’s Alice’s birthday today, I decided instead to watch some Alice-themed YouTubery! Granted, it took me a while to FIND something, but in the end I saw –
I. Roughly half of an analysis of the two games, AMA and A:MR – I ended up backing out at the point where the host was admitting they didn’t like Alice herself. I was okay with their critiques on how the original did amazing level design but fell down a bit on the jumping and combat, while the sequel had great movement and combat but got a bit samey with the levels (apart from the visuals), but I wasn’t about to watch someone calling Alice merely “tolerable” on her birthday.
II. The “Night At The Opera” Alice: Otherlands short, which remains a mixed bag. The stop-motion animation technically is beautifully done, and I like the glimpse into the Liddells’ tastes in entertainment, but – I can’t help it, I think the puppets are ugly. Alice doesn’t look like herself, and the Valkyries are. . .well, they’re basically black bug-like Alices, which – got me. They claimed that they were going for an insectoid look in the art book (which I skimmed again while eating my cupcake) for, uh, reasons. The storyboards and original script are far superior to what we got, that's for sure.
III. The original AMA trailer, which is one of my favorite video game trailers ever for setting the right tone for a game. :) It’s very well done and iconique. And I was worried it had disappeared from YouTube, given the one I had in my “Clip Mania” playlist is currently listed as “unavailable.” Glad to see someone still has it!
So yeah, that was a brief but nice change from the routine in honor of the day. :) Back to Minnie tomorrow, though – I gotta see how she handles Kiddie Kingdom!
2. Edit some more on “In A World Of His Own” Chapter 4: Check! Retyped the concert scene with a few little edits – rearranging a few words here and there, tweaking phrasing, that sort of thing. And I’ve come up with an idea on how to justify the Paino fight – while talking about how he doesn’t like just anyone hearing him play, Victor’s going to start complaining about what might have happened if either Maudeline or Finis had caught him at the piano. . .and THEN everyone hears the notes of an angry Harryhausen! Now I don’t have to keep lampshading Victor not getting why this particular fight is happening. :p
3. Keep up with YouTube Subscriptions: Check -- back down to two a day, which is helpful --
A) Started with Call Me Kevin introducing us to more Irish TV – Stop Search Seize, a show about various custom checkpoints around Ireland! It’s actually pretty interesting – we had incidents ranging from “we saw a couple of weird packages with our handheld scanner – oh, you had to put your overflow carrots into a couple of other bags, okay,” to “this giant box smells like coffee – yup, they stuffed a bunch of pricey cocaine bricks and weed bags in here and sprinkled it with Folgers.” XD Kevin was really into the whole thing (especially when they visited a classic sailing ship in Cork, and brought out the drug dogs at the airport), and I don’t blame him. Wouldn’t mind seeing more!
B) Then it was onto GrayStillPlays and more GTA V stunt races! Today’s was a complicated parkour board – where most of it had to be done without tires. Meaning there were spike strips placed at key points to pop your tires and make sure you were doing things like climbing steep ramps or doing tightropes right on your rims. Gray – Gray suffered. Gray suffered a lot. There was a boatload of suffering just from trying to get through the starting area. And then he actually got up to the hovering bits of hell, with the ramps and the wall rides that suddenly go upside-down and the “drive over these frosty drinks!” and – oh man. This is a new level of agony by which all others will be measured. I approve.
C) And naturally, since I watched one of the Otherlands shorts with my workout, I felt I ought to watch the other one after having my cupcake – “Leviathan!” Again, mixed bag – I’m not a great fan of the anime style, though I think it at least looks more like Alice than the puppet. And the dresses are nice, particularly the one for the Journey To The Center Of The Earth bit (which I happily stole for the Butterfly Jungle section of “In A World Of His Own”). And I like the story too – Alice and Verne discussing the effect of his stories on people, and how he might want to caution against scientific curiosity being turned to evil ends. Just wish Verne’s accent wasn’t QUITE so thick. . .ah well, still fun. And I’d still rather have Otherlands than the Asylum prequel!
4. Get my tumblr queues sorted: Check! Bit of a squeeze, but I got all the text for Eric’s update on Victor Luvs Alice tomorrow sorted, along with some posts for Thursday and Friday; and three asks and a reblog of some cute Alice birthday art on Valice Multiverse. :) So I’m good for a little while, yay~
So that's everything! Busy day, that's for damn sure. . .running a little behind too. Well, let's go answer the DW comment and then hit the sheets. We'll see what work is like tomorrow -- maybe a little quieter? One can only hope. . .night all!
