Period Brain Definitely Kicking In
Jul. 16th, 2022 11:54 pmNot so much in the "brain fog" way but more the "distracted and jumping around between stuff" way. Which is sort of more annoying, in its own way. . . Still, I managed to do pretty good on the old to-do list earlier:
1. Write the second draft of the gift fic: Check – did this after lunch and getting my pictures sorted for the next Chill Save update on my Victor Luvs Alice tumblr, since I wanted to do it while the brain was fresh. Rewrote and reworked the whole scene of my tumblr friend SlyCooper’s Phillianne OC (in Ventrue vampire form) telling Therese Voerman she knows all about her fake charity and how she considers her a scumbag for it into something I think will be well-received as a gift fic this upcoming Friday! Just gotta remember to stick it into my drafts before then. . .
2. Keep up on YouTube Subs and see if I can clear out the Watch Later: Check plus! Not only did I FINALLY clear out my Watch Later for a night, I even got in a few bonus videos from the good old Recommendeds! So yeah, let’s see what I got through –
A) First up, it was time to clear out those two AT4W episodes I had waiting in the old WL –
I. Before beanbags, we had “Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger Ep . 17-21” – a Patreon-sponsored review making him watch more of the “pirate sentai who would be adapted into Power Rangers Megaforce” show! This time focusing around the creation of the sixth ranger, Gai, a sentai fanboy who got his powers after he saved a little girl from being hit by a truck and some of the previous sentai sixth rangers deemed him worthy. Also, he apparently has the option to directly ask all these other old sixth rangers from previous sentai to merge their powers into one for him and give him a super-key that makes him extra-powerful and makes him look extra-ridiculous. Seriously, you should see how stupid this chestplate looks. XD Plus we had the return of their arch-nemesis Bosco and his monkey, also on the look for the “ultimate powers” they’re trying to collect; a fight against a creature that makes people “boneless” (less “no actual bones,” more “no internal drive to do anything” – no backbone, as per the comments), with a side order of “one of the team is scared the new guy is gonna take his place in the line-up, and they have to hash out his insecurities;” and a trip with an old classic sentai from another series to find a heart that can resurrect the dead, with the heroes literally ripping it out of the retro monster-of-the-week’s chest once it’s used to resurrect him. Fun times! XD I may not be a “sentai” fan, or even “any series of Power Rangers past the very first couple of seasons of Mighty Morphin’” fan, but the episodes were fun, and I followed the plots well enough. Linkara seemed to enjoy them too, though he kept bitching about how Megaforce screwed up their adaptation. I don’t think he likes that series very much. :P But yeah, nice to have something that’s just good and fun on the show!
II. Then after beanbags, we had “US-1 #11,” the penultimate issue of this comic about a trucker with a CB-radio skull (Ulysses Solomon Archer) and his truck full of cool gadgets that has grown to involve neo-Nazis, corrupt realtors, the evil Highway supervillain, and ACTUAL FREAKING ALIENS. As Linkara likes to remind us, this damn thing was based on toy slot car trucks. XD This issue, though, actually had the aliens explain some of the madness (after flying everyone back to the truck stop and teleporting the Nazis fighting the truckers there to TEL-AVIV – as Linkara says, perhaps disintegrating them instead, as the others thought they had, would have been a mercy, given what the residents are then implied to do >D). See, the problem is, the aliens had wanted to make first contact with Earth, but didn’t WANT to be taken to our leader – they wanted to choose their own representative. After some study, they decided on Ulysses. . .but because aliens are a bit space-racist and find it hard to tell Earthlings apart, they accidentally picked up his older brother Jeff instead. Jeff, who had been harboring intense resentment toward his golden-boy baby brother for YEARS, chose not to correct their mistake, instead faking his own death. The aliens had realized what was going on by the time of the truck accident that supposedly killed Jeff, and saved Ulysses and gave him his special radio skull. All the nonsense that’s been happening since has been Jeff trying to “prove” himself to the aliens in the persona of the Highwayman, and Ulysses foiling his plans. The aliens don’t feel like EITHER brother got the decisive victory they wanted, though, so it appears #12 will be their final showdown! It’s a bit of a weird wrap-up, and Linkara notes it feels like a hasty “okay, we have to clear up all this nonsense in twelve issues now” rewrite, but – strangely enough, they’re making it work. Jeff genuinely does feel resentful of his overachiever brother (especially since said overachiever’s big dream was to, you know, DRIVE A TRUCK), and Ulysses genuinely hurt that he was unknowingly causing his brother pain. It’s hackneyed, but it’s a good kind, you know? *shrug* We’ll see how it all turns out when Linkara eventually gets to the last issue!
B) Then, before supper, we had a surprise from the Recommendeds – another episode of “The Vampair Series,” season 2! Showing off some of Duke’s backstory through the Voltaire Song “Raised By Bats” – and it turns out this guy is a LOT more modern than we originally thought. He dresses like a Victorian gentlemen, but he was actually a relatively modern goth before he got turned, and just – embraced the lifestyle with all his might. XD Also he and Missi now hit the city at night, and they’re getting along reasonably well (though Missi seems to harbor some resentment/belief that Duke’s STILL after the cane).
C) After supper and my shower, it was back to the Watch Later to clear out the OXBoxtra:
I. “Pokemon Was Saved by Hidden Mew Code | Oxplain” – in lieu of a list this week, Luke of OXtra opted instead to share some video game history. Namely, the fact that the original Japanese Pokemon games did not sell very well at all – until people started finding and telling their friends about the glitchy secret “Mew” Pokemon that Game Freak had snuck into the final game cartridge after removing all the debugging code, just for a laugh. The legends of Mew grew word of mouth about the game; the official comic did a contest to properly “unlock” Mew for twenty lucky kids, causing even more of a stir; and soon enough the game became one of the most popular in the land, just in time to storm the shores of North America and become one of the most beloved franchises in the world. :) So yeah, all those urban legends about how to get a Mew in the original games are the reason we live in a world so stuffed to the gills with Pokemon. Nice!
II. “7 Cursed Levels You Should Nope Out Of Immediately” – the OXBox crew, meanwhile, stuck with a list all about the creepiest, most cursed levels in video games! These included the Ruined Kingdom from Super Mario Odysessy (featuring a landscape more in-line with Dark Souls and a big old realistic dragon boss); Ravenholm from Half-Life 2 (home of the poison headcrabs!); and – The End from Minecraft. O.o Okay, maybe for people who haven’t watched GrayStillPlays absolutely wreck the Enderdragon in a number of increasingly weird and delightful ways. XD
D) Then it was time for – Plumbella and “The Sims 4: High School Years Honest Review!” Look, I’m annoyed with JAMES for posting multiple ultra-long videos in a very short time period, not her. XD But yeah, I figured I’d get over myself enough to check her opinion on the upcoming expansion – and it was actually kind of “meh.” Some stuff she really liked – the thrifting mechanic and how your Sim can style outfits for gifts or sale; the experience of going to high school and wandering through the halls, socializing between classes and whatnot; prom actually being FUN, we are spared My Wedding Stories-style drama I guess; a few new traits and whatnot – but some stuff she was very disappointed in – those “active” classes aren’t actually truly active (your Sim just sits there and watches the teacher); after-school activities are still rabbit holes and the football field is barely used; the Ferris wheel on the pier doesn’t allow you to watch your Sim go around on it; the “streamer” side hustle feels very shallow; Career Day feels very shallow. . . It’s a mix, basically. She says she had fun with the pack, but – okay, she compared it to Realm of Magic, but I think the better comparison is Island Living – good concept, weak execution due to stretching things too thin. There’s apparently a lot in this pack, but a lot of it is fairly shallow. I now feel justified in not feeling very hype. XD Now, granted, there’s stuff I would like in this pack – the “Socially Awkward” trait, the pier and all its carnival atmosphere (even if you can’t properly ride the Ferris Wheel), the photo booth – but is it worth paying full price? I’m not sure. Maybe I’ll make a more informed decision once I finally get around to watching James’s vids. (Since I do want to watch them, and I understand that posting lots of videos is his, you know, JOB – it’s simply a case of I can’t have them sitting in my Subs and overwhelming my brain just at this moment.)
E) And finally, to wrap up, we had GrayStillPlays and Find The Alien, a mobile game where you use an X-Ray screen to find hidden aliens in suburban scenes and then zap them with a gun to force them to reveal themselves. And then go onto the alien ship to rescue the citizens they captured to impersonate, occasionally zapping the Alien King when he shows up. Simple, and yet oh-so-amusing with Gray’s desire to murder everything and everyone he comes across. Though since he loses the game if he zaps the humans, he limited himself to playing correctly and only zapping the aliens. XD Best level was the one where an alien diguised themselves as a giant traffic cone in someone’s kitchen – and then you ended up rescuing the traffic cone from the alien spaceship. XD Gray loved it too, and I hope he plays more to see what other inanimate objects he might have to save from the aliens in the future!
3. Play Sims 4 and send Smiler to Henford-on-Bagley for "Night On The Town": Check, though the whole thing ended up taking less time than I expected. Though admittedly, I was working around their class schedule. . . Here’s how things went down:
A) Started the day by letting them play some Blicblock as they had a whim for it – then, after they’d harvested their garden, had them try out a novice tournament because they had a whim for that too. Didn’t go well, sadly – they lost, and badly. :p Ah well, it was only $10! They also did some homework, and made sure to use their massive amount of influence to make sure that “Support The Performing Arts” got voted in as the next NAP for their neighborhood before going to their first class!
B) Once that was over, I had them call up Victor and Alice and took them all to The Gnome’s Arms pub in Henford-on-Bagley to celebrate the pop-up holiday Night On The Town! Basically all food and drink at community lots is free, so you may as well get a snack or a soda – or, in Smiler’s case, a nice Plasma Jane. They had a little bit of fun flirting time with Victor at the front gate in the rain, but then – well, I’m not sure WHAT happened, but Victor must have ended up leaving at some point, because after I sent Smiler to the bar to get their free drink, I didn’t see him again. There was also some tension with Alice, because she was mysteriously sad for a bit (making me wonder if she and Victor no longer have the Wonderful Whims “Polyamorous” trait applied to them), then she did one of those random insults that “Erratic” Sims love. Fortunately Smiler was able to pull the conversation back to pleasantness before they had to go – even made a new friend in Cecilia Kang when she came to the bar for her free drink! So yeah, that was all right, and at least Smiler did successfully complete the holiday!
C) Then, after they got back from their second class, I had them head over to the local fishing hole behind the pub to fish for a while and work on their Angling Ace aspiration! They tried fishing with their Sixam Mosquito Trap plant seeds, and got a voodoo doll (dunno if I should sell that for cash or have them use it. . .), a Tuna (which again double-counted as a great catch), and a Discus (which got turned into a plasma pack). That has gotten them past the third level of the aspiration – they just have to collect five more different types of fish and max out the fishing skill, and that aspiration will be completed! :) And then it was back home to work on their term paper before heading to work.
So yeah – not a HECK of a lot going on, but Smiler accomplished a few things! Not bad for the Friday before Sim New Year’s, I guess! :p Just wish I hadn’t gotten a Last Exception midway through – looks like it might have something to do with the “All Bugged Out” mod? Ugh, I like that one. . .I’ve saved this game as a new save file, just in case, and maybe I’ll redownload it in case something’s happened to the package files. *shrug* In any case, next week is the big one – as New Year’s Eve is bringing some changes. Before the latest patch REALLY trips everyone up, I want to get Victor, Alice, and Smiler all living in the same house. Fingers crossed it goes well!
4. Work on tumblr drafts: Okay, I got all the pictures done for this update (four-parter! But then again, it is Winterfest), and I drafted one of them with some starter text this evening. . .given I’ve been running uphill against the period brain this evening, I’m gonna call that a check and hope I can get through the rest of it tomorrow! Feel like I would have done better on this had I not needed to walk my Mom through how to take a screenshot for a problem she was experiencing on eBay for their chat this morning, delaying my breakfast smoothie and my usual tumblr catch-up time (and then had to stick around as she started ANOTHER chat because the first guy she was talking to decided to END IT after FOUR MINUTES because apparently we were taking too long).
Additionally:
-->Despite a rather cloudy sky and a rather sticky day (not that HOT, but definitely HUMID, ick) we did venture out to play beanbags – and we ended up breaking our established patterns! Mom still only won one game, yeah, but it was the SECOND game, not the first, while I took first and third and Dad had a slow start and took the last two. Final scores were me W-3-W-3-2; Dad 2-2-3-W-W; Mom 3-W-2-2-3. Not too shabby!
Not bad, not bad at all! Glad I got all that accomplished before the tired/distracted really kicked in. And now it's time to set up the Sunday to-dos:
1. Keep up with the FO4 Playthrough Progression
2. Keep up with YouTube Subs and Jon's "Legendary Roulette" video
3. Play Fallout 4 and get over to Sunshine Tidings to fix them up
4. Work on tumblr drafts
5. Get in a workout
Hopefully all doable -- the first two days of my period do tend to be the worst. Now to go see if I can focus enough to do a few more things, or if I should give up the ghost and go haunt TV Tropes for the rest of the night. XD Night all!
