Slow Start To 2025
Jan. 1st, 2025 11:48 pmIt took me longer than anticipated to actually get up and get moving this morning, and I didn't get as much done as I hoped I might (though I did at least get everything I really wanted to get done, done) --
Tumblr: Just Victor Luvs Alice (N Smiler) today – which is good, because I had a slow start today, and then spent most of my morning catching up on my dash. I did post my Fic Resolutions for this year, though! Big three goals are to finish posting “Londerland Bloodlines: Downtown Queensland” and start the first draft of “Londerland Bloodlines: Hollywood’s Deluded Depths;” continue working on the Valicer In The Dark series (starting with editing and posting “A Murder Shared Is A Murder Thirded”); and trying to get back into the habit of reading and reviewing fic when I’m at home (instead of just reading stories on my lunch break, when I can’t really review them). Hopefully these are all achievable goals! I’d like to think they are anyway!
Gaming: Had to change this heading to something generic today, because I actually played two games this afternoon (admittedly one very briefly for a very specific reason) –
A) Sims 4 – I hit up my current Building Save today (“Building Save Numero Dos,” if you’re curious) – but not to work on the Polyheart OT3 house. Instead, my goal was to test out a CAS Unlocks mod I found on tumblr, specifically to see if I could get Smiler’s bright yellow glowing eyes back for at least long enough to take a picture or two of them in what I think of as their “standard” Valicer In The Dark outfit. Even more specifically, what I wanted was a headshot of them in their hat, since I realized recently I don’t have any shots like that (every screenshot I have of them in a VITD-based fit is a full-body shot). So, how did that go?
Mostly well. I successfully installed the mod (in tandem with the “More CAS Columns (4 Columns)” mod I use to make scrolling through CAS easier); made some backups of my “saves” and “Tray” folder (just in case); loaded up “Building Save Numero Dos;” and grabbed the Valicer trio who already lives in it to edit in CAS, since I knew they wouldn’t have any missing modded clothing for the game to warn me about. I then went straight to Smiler, had a brief weird moment I wasn’t convinced their skintone was quite right (it was, I just checked the screenshots I took against some earlier ones and the skintone matches – I think I just wasn’t used to seeing them in CAS anymore), then clicked on their eyes to bring up that section of CAS –
And saw a bunch of eye colors with little “custom content” wrench icons on them – including the bright yellow eyes from Vampires! Pleased, I whacked those on Smiler and started the search for the right hat –
And then paused. Because something still felt – off, somehow, about their face. Puzzled, I went back and looked at their eyes. They were definitely the right color, there was no doubt about that…
And then I realized what was wrong – there were no shadows around Smiler’s eyes. Because the interesting thing about those glowing yellow eyes from Vampires is that, when they’re applied normally on a vampire, they leave a distinct shadowy ring around the eye socket. Here, let me show you what I mean:

This is Smiler as I first made them, with the glowing yellow eyes I picked from the vampire eye color options. See how there’s a shadow around their eyes, makes them look perhaps a bit sunken?

This is a Smiler that resulted from my experiments back in early 2023 to create a human Smiler for my Library, in case I wanted one that wasn’t a vampire – when I cured them via the in-game potion, they lost their yellow eyes, and I gave them green eyes in-keeping with my headcanon about what their “natural” eye color should be. Note the lack of shadow around the eye socket.

And this is the Smiler I briefly created today with the mod (complete with hat), who has the correct bright yellow eye color, but no shadow around their eye sockets! Which is what was throwing me off, because I expected the shadow when I swapped the eye color. Kind of implies the eyes are glowing and all! Now, I thought that maybe I could fix this by swapping to someone else and letting the game reload their face or something –
But the minute I swapped to Alice, Smiler’s eyes just straight-up changed to blue. Like, it was an instant swap. *huffs* Seems like that bug where occult eyes won’t stay present on a Sim’s face is pretty damn severe! I mean, yeah, maybe this has something to do with me messing around with mods and putting occult eyes on a human Sim, but – still. REALLY hoping this gets fixed soon, Sims team, because I can’t play my Smiler if they don’t have the right eye color!
So yeah – I did get my shot (as you can see above), BUT the eyes weren’t quite right. And I couldn’t actually get them to stay on Smiler’s face anyway. AND I’m not entirely sure the “CAS Unlocker” mod was working correctly, as I saw a lot of weird empty boxes in my CAS columns while looking for the right top and pants (though maybe that’s my fault – you’re supposed to delete the package files for packs you don’t have, and it’s possible I missed one), so I didn’t bother even trying to save what I did – I just got my pictures, exited out of CAS, and then straight-up exited out of the game without saving. Meeeh. I guess what I SHOULD do the next time I want to play around in CAS is just turn Smiler back into a vampire for the duration – that way, the eyes should look correct. Though I guess I could say that I’ve now got a picture of what any modern human Smiler would look like with their contacts in? I’m PRETTY sure you can’t get ones that glow, sooo… *shrug* I’ll take what I can get!
B) Baldur’s Gate III – And after my little Sims 4 experiment, I headed over here to recreate Smiler in THIS game’s character creator so I could get them all ready for what will hopefully be an ACTUAL FULL PLAYTHROUGH of the game, instead of me failing to get past the starting area because of various mod and patch worries. XD How did that go?
Pretty good! :D Thanks to my two previous jaunts in the BG3 Character Creator, I already knew what race (Half-Elf, with High Elf as the subrace), body type (#2), head (#5), and voice (#7) looked the most like my Smiler Sim. (Though I did realize in the process that I’d never written down what skintone I used for them – fortunately, a little poking around confirmed that Warm Tone #1 was the closest match). Which really just left their eyes and hair to take care of. The eyes proved to be pretty easy to update – “Rox’s Shimmering Eyes” gave me the perfect pair of gold-colored, softly-glowing eyes for them (meaning, hilariously, I had an easier time getting glowing eyes for them in THIS game than I did in Sims 4 today) –
The hair, however...that proved a little more difficult. I spent a fair whack of time going through the various options of both regular hairstyles and the separated bangs and braids and whatnot I got yesterday, trying to decide what combination actually looked the most like the haircut Smiler has in my Sims game. Eventually, though, I came across a winner – the messy “Precision Bolt” hairstyle paired with the “VCC Layered Lob Fringe.” The way “Precision Bolt” is styled, it looks the most like Smiler’s base hair in the front and the back, and the “Layered Lob Fringe” gives them the proper bangs hanging down along the side of their face! Here, see for yourself:

That is probably about as close as I will ever come to the haircut I picked for them in Sims 4! I have made the appropriate notes, I assure you.
Anyway, after getting all that done (and updating their makeup so they had the right yellow liner around their eyes too), it was time to move onto class, spells, and stats! Which fortunately didn’t take too long to sort:
Class: I was tempted to make them an Artificer from the start this time around (after all, chemistry/alchemy is their THING), but then I was like “no, starting them as a Bard puts their Charisma automatically at 17, and that is where I want it. They are charismatic as fuck, damn it.” XD So they remained a Bard for this go-round, with the “Entertainer” background (I was briefly like “maybe ‘Sage’ would be better?” as Smiler does like learning stuff, but – nah, they’re all about entertaining people and keeping them happy first and foremost)
Spells: Their High Elf subrace granted them a free cantrip – I grabbed “Mind Sliver” (one of my mod-added spells, which allows you to stab a spike of psychic energy into someone’s brain – ouch) for that slot. As for their Bard spells, I went with “Friends” (gives you advantage on Charisma checks with friendly people) and “Minor Illusion” (creates a, well, minor illusion that can distract enemies) for their starting cantrips, and “Charm Person” (allows you to charm people into not attacking you and also gives advantage on Charisma checks), “Tasha’s Hideous Laughter” (can paralyze an enemy temporarily with laughter), “Sleep” (can send people to, well, sleep), and “Heroism” (imbues Smiler or an ally with courage, making them immune to being Frightened and giving them some temporary hit points) for their starting Level One spells. I felt like those were all the ones that were most on brand for Smiler!
Stats: I set their ability scores at Strength 10, Dexterity 13, Constitution 12, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 17 – that makes them, as stated, charismatic as fuck AND decently intelligent, while also not penalizing them for being not on the strong side (you dip beneath 10 in a stat, you get a -1 dice modifier – not about that). As for their skills, they automatically got proficiency in Acrobatics (+3) and Performance (+5) from their background, while the suggested Bard proficiencies were in Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation. I kept Persuasion (at a hefty +5), but moved the other two over to Insight (+2) and Medicine (+2) as I felt those were a little more Smilerish the way I was trying to play them (especially the “Medicine” one – if this is a Smiler who plays around with potions, they would obviously know how to identify what those potions DO to people!)
*nods* Not bad. And after that it was time to make their “Guardian” – I went with a yellow-toned tiefling with purple tattoos and eye makeup, using the extra-dark black hair and the “Alt Lae’zel” hairstyle I downloaded to justify their existence –
And then it was time to start the game! And then stop the game because I’d spent so much time in character creation. XD I left off right after all the opening cutscenes, with Smiler having just been released from their pod – next time, it’ll be time to get Us and beat the tutorial dungeon! Again. :p
(Oh, and if you were wondering...yes, I caved and downloaded the “Weightless Gold” mod. I’m going to have enough shit to carry without worrying about my money!)
Writing: I’d hoped to do more here, but between getting that write-up about my games sorted above, catching up on everything on tumblr, and all the rest of it, I just never had the time to start editing “Downtown Queensland” or do anything else. Though I will say that, while doing my fic resolution post for tumblr, I came up with a title for the fourth Valicer In The Dark story (the one where they steal a list of potential union reps back from a factory boss who was planning to call assassins on the people named on it) – “They Would Have Done It For An Ottoman!” Because the joke of that particular score is that they’re paid in furniture, which they desperately need for their under-furnished lair. XD So at least that’s sorted!
YouTube: Just had time for the one GrayStillPlays video this evening – “Bikes vs Lightning in GTA 5!” A torture board that saw Gray having to sail bikes across a huge gap, dodging giant lightning katanas all the way (and THEN having to escape the landing area quickly enough to avoid being shocked to death when the wall came up); fly his way through the swirling blades of a lightning-empowered double weebmill (timing was EVERYTHING here); race down a bunch of appearing-and-disappearing Minecraft-inspired lightning platforms (over shark-infested waters – seriously, Gray fell into the water once while trying to do it in first person and turned out to come face-to-face with a shark); and finally go head-to-head with Santa as he attempted to beat Jolly Old St. Nick’s sleigh to the finish line while dodging the lightning boosters Kris Kingle dropped (because if he hit one, his bike was going FLYING out from under him). Many bikes tried and many bikes failed (though we did learn that the pizza scooter can seriously stick a landing), but in the end the pinkest bike prevailed! Barely, as it hit the final booster right as Gray hit the winning checkpoint, but – still. XD
...and yes, that is all you’re getting, because my New Year’s resolution when it comes to this section of my daily write-ups is “STOP BEING SO WORDY.” Doing full recaps takes up WAAAY too much of my time – I gotta trim it down! We’ll see how well I do – especially on Sunday, with the latest Fallout: London episode from Jon...
Workout: Back on the bike after yesterday’s skip, and back to “Hanging out with all of Tiny Town! - Part 12” by James Turner! Scarlett’s adventures in gardening continued, with the most notable events of this particular chunklet being:
A) Scarlett abusing her power as club leader to make all of her half siblings come over and help her garden on the regular – especially after she herself maxed the gardening skill, meaning there was no REASON for her to do it all herself anymore
B) Scarlett harvesting all of her plants and oversized crops and taking them to Finchwick to sell, making sure to haggle to get increased profits – her first attempt to do this was unsuccessful, but her SECOND attempt was EXTRA successful because she ended up selling everything during the Saturday Finchwick Fair, which actually adds its OWN bonuses to buying and selling crops! Meaning she was able to sell everything at an extra +25% profit instead of just +10%! So that was handy!
C) Scarlet getting into Giant Mushroom farming for her second set of oversized crops – I think James did this just because one of her previous giant mushrooms was the most profitable crop she grew, but I also think it fits her “fairycore” aesthetic, given that “fairy rings” are circles of mushrooms
D) James starting Scarlett’s treehouse, getting an actual giant tree from Horse Ranch (I believe from the debug menu) and using all the building tricks he knows (plus a little help from the TOOL mod) to build a house that looks like its resting on its branches, wrapping around the trunk of the tree! It’s pretty cool-looking, with lots of balconies and fun oddly-shaped rooms and whatnot. He’s had to rearrange the rows of giant mushrooms and make the greenhouse a bit smaller to fit it all in, but it’s coming together!
So yeah – Scarlett may not be making as much money as James hoped, but she’s made enough to make a decent place to live, at least! I look forward to seeing James complete the initial form of the Fairycore Treehouse build tomorrow!
*whew* Okay, now that that's all settled, I have to head to bed, because it's back to work tomorrow! For two whole days. *rolls eyes* I don't get why they didn't just give us the whole two weeks off...ah well. Hopefully tomorrow is busy in a way that makes the time go by but doesn't completely stress me out. We'll see! Night all!
