Hey, a Meme I Want To Do
Jun. 30th, 2006 10:04 pmThe Friday Five
Fans!
1.) What fandom do you center on most?
Back To The Future -- specifically Part I
2.) Do you contribute to it much (write fanfiction, draw fanart, participate in online communities and discussions)?
Oh, heck yes. I've written about 50 pieces of fan fiction, drawn numerous pieces of fanart, and I'm members of both major BTTF forum sites, BTTF.com and backtothefutureonline.
3.) Do you think that such things are good or harmful to the fandom and why?
I think it's good -- it helps keep the trilogy fresh and new for those of us who like it. I like the debates on how time travel is supposed to work, and imagining how Doc and Marty first met. Fanfiction is more of a gamble, though. You have a lot of people who don't bother to use spellcheck or anything like that, unfortunately.
4.) Do you think its good or harmful for the original creator?
I think that, most of the time, it's good. It's probably nice for the creator to know that people love his/her work that much. Though I'm sure a few of them would think the fans might take things a bit too seriously. The Bobs would also probably be stunned if they saw a few of the fan fiction concepts (hell, most of my own are pretty out there).
5.) Why do you like this fandom in particular?
What I like the most is the interplay between Marty and Doc. It's obvious that they have an extremely strong friendship. I also like the time travel elements, just don't ask me to explain them.
-VD: You really should be writing.-
Ugh, I dunno if I'm coherent enough to write. I feel really tired right now.
-TD: Not getting enough sleep. It happens.-
YOU should talk.
-TD: I'm including myself in that statement. You're just lucky you don't end up sleepwalking in your underwear.-
Hmmm, good point. And I did write something today -- I finished up the Secret Project, which can now be revealed as --
gigs_83's birthday present!
-VD2: You wrote someone fan fiction for their birthday?-
Yup. Remember how Gigs wrote Here's Hopping, featuring VampDoc's, OckDoc's, and VampDoc2's universes? I got inspired to write an alternate scenario in which AL, Doc, and Marty end up in BGTeenDoc's universe.
-M: Oh, that would be fun.-
*giggle* It was. Gigs, you never said anything about Lisa knowing German as far as I could see. ;)
-VM: German?-
On the GG List, we figured that the GG characters should really be speaking some form of German or Latin -- Europa Wulfenbach seems to enclose Germanic/Austrian/Transylvanian areas.
-M2: *looks at VDM* I can't see you speaking German.-
-VDM: Gut, Ich kann, Sie wissen.-
-M2: o.O-
-TD: He said, "Well, I can, you know."-
-M: That is WEIRD.-
Yeah, it's hard to imagine you speaking German. But the storyline called for it. I hope you like it Gigs. :)
As for other pursuits today, I played Simmies! It was time to visit the Hill Valley McFlys again -- they had a reasonably good day. Dave got things off to a nice start with a random hug for George, awww.

Since they were awake because of the newly-installed patch, I had them study and skill up until it was time for breakfast. Lorraine made fried eggs for everyone.

Someone please tell my Sims they don't necessarily HAVE to sit at the breakfast bar, away from everyone else. Seriously, in this family, almost every time a meal is served, someone does that.

Morning came, taking Dave and Lorraine off to work and Marty off to school -- poor kid got stuck unclogging the toilet before he left.

Linda and George, left alone, did a bit more skilling, then George worked on his novel while Linda had Seamus McFly over. Hey, Marty and George have visited his place, it was about time someone returned the favor.

After reconnecting with his great-great-great-granddaughter, Seamus proceeded to play drums. :D He wasn't very good at it. Linda and George ignored him in favor of darts.

Marty came home at 1 and took pity on Seamus, joining him on bass.

Then he entertained him with some jokes and gossip -- about his mother no less! Perhaps he was mentioning how much she looks like Maggie?
-M: Don't want to think about that!-

Seamus eventually left, and Lorraine and Dave returned home with promotions -- Lorraine's an MVP, Dave a CEO! Yay more money. I sent them to skill, along with George. Linda grabbed some coffee instead. At least she put the cup where I could see it.

Marty hit the grill, cooking up hamburgers for anyone who wanted them.

As night fell, my Sims started to feel pretty exhausted, so I started sending them to bed (after some need fulfillment). I also noticed that one of the counters had gotten beyond filthy.

Ew, huh? Dave got to clean it in exchange for getting a trash compactor (he wanted to buy one).

Then it was off to bed with him too, closing out our day.
-M: I thought you were moving Dave and Linda out?-
I kind of like having the whole family together. But yeah, I should. Next time -- I got caught up in skilling.
Making a list, checking it twice. . . .
-OD: Pardon?-
Since July 3rd is coming up, I thought I should get down all of the birthdays I want to celebrate here. I know all the canon characters, but I figured I should get all the girls too.
-VD: That's right! We should celebrate the girls' birthdays!-
-VD2: That's awful that it took you this long to think of it!-
Hey, you didn't help! Plus the actual birthdays kept slipping my mind. I finally just visited all my story biography pages to figure out what's what so I could make a list.
-DW: Good idea. How many birthdays do we have?-
Let's see:
Doc Brown -- October 22nd
Marty McFly -- June 9th
Jennifer Parker -- July 5th
George McFly -- April 1st
Lorraine McFly -- May 31st
Dave McFly -- March 31
Linda McFly -- September 15th
Clara Clayton -- February 8th
Mysteria Jones -- August 10th
Josephine Grey -- August 5th
Gypsy Robinson -- November 5th (1955)
Emily Brown -- April 12th
Holly Handlen -- July 3rd
All of the canon characters have their actor's birthday except George McFly -- his birthday was canonically establish in Part II.
-VD: Both Mystie and Josie have August birthdays?-
*shrug* I picked theirs and Emily's at random. Sorry about missing your birthday, Emily.
-E: It's all right -- there's next year.-
Gypsy's is an obvious joke, and Holly shares her with BTTF's.
-H: Can't resist your injokes, can you?-
Never. :D
-J: Too bad Dad's birthday wasn't established.-
Yeah, it's very McFly-oriented, isn't it? Sorry about that.
-AJ: Not a problem -- the series IS about Marty.-
Okay, now to try and write before drifting off to sleep. *grabs the persistent plotbunny* Here, bite me and keep me awake.
-DW: I could perform that service.-
I don't care how gentle you'd be, it would still hurt like heck.
And hi to
hollywoodnewsie! Welcome to the weirdness. :)
