Lazy Saturday
Dec. 19th, 2009 11:33 pmHaven't done much today. Though I did discover it's possible to mess up a DVD enough to make it start skipping in the MENU SCREEN. Guess who didn't get to watch the Ghostbusters special features because the movie just kept automatically starting? Luckily I had an alternate option with the Seinfeld DVD we have, and the Ghostbusters 2 DVD looks like it'll play. (Though we have it on VHS too, as back-up.)
-M2: That sucks.-
I'll live. I vaguely remember seeing them before, back when the only way to watch a DVD was on this here computer. I forget when we actually got a DVD player, but it was after a year or two of living here.
-D: Of course, now you use the DVD player exclusively because your computer dislikes playing DVDs.-
I know. Anyway, most of the day was just hanging around the house. We were under a blizzard warning for most of it, actually.
-VD2: Blizzard?!-
Yeah. Though nothing materialized until rather late. That being said, I just looked outside, and it's starting to look rather white.
-Muses: *sulk*-
-TTV: Well -- at least we'll have a white Christmas?-
More like a muddy one -- so far they're predicting a snow/rain mix for the day itself.
Speaking of Christmas, let's have some fic:
The Seventh Thing of Christmas that’s such a pain to me:
The Salvation Army
Victor saw the woman hunched in front of the toy shop, looking to be little more than a bundle of rags. She seemed to have the absolute minimum amount of flesh for life on her skinny arms and sunken face. Her hair was ratty and tangled, shoved carelessly under a bonnet that had seen much better days. Her nails were dirty and cracked, both fingers and toes, and she wore neither gloves nor shoes. All in all, she was the absolute epitome of helpless, homeless beggar woman. Poor lady, Victor thought with a wince. I know far too much about how you probably feel. Cast aside into a world that cares little for you. . . . And you haven’t had the luck to find good friends, as I have.
He walked over to the woman, who glanced up as he approached. Victor paused slightly as he saw her eyes. Something was – odd – about them. The way the lamplight caught them, they almost looked – golden. “Per-perchance, sir, could I b-bother you for a trifle?” she asked timidly, holding out one age-worn hand.
Victor pulled his thoughts away from her eyes – it was probably just a trick of the light. “That’s why I came over here,” he told her with a little smile. He place a couple of silver pieces into her palm. “You need it more than I do.” Especially since Marty still has most of his stash of gold.
“Silver! Sir, you a-are too kind,” the woman said, looking pleasantly embarrassed.
“It’s nothing, really,” Victor told her, blushing a little. “I know what it’s like to be out in the world with nothing. I couldn’t let someone else suffer like that.”
The woman gave him a surprisingly bright smile. “Such a kind-hearted f-fellow. Please, I must give you s-something in return.” She reached into the folds of her clothes and extracted a little piece of paper, which she pressed into Victor’s hand. “Read that, and I promise, you’ll find just what you’re looking for,” she told him with a wink.
Victor wasn’t sure what to make of this, but figured it best to just smile and nod. “Thank you. A good day to you – and a good Christmas.”
“The same to you, laddie.” The woman huddled back down. Victor turned and started to walk away – then, curiosity getting the better of him, he paused and read the little slip of paper:
Your Alice wants, though she’ll never admit it, a good solider nutcracker all dressed in blue. There’s one just like her parents had in the toy shop. As for yourself, procure some mistletoe and she’ll be happy to give you what you want.
Victor’s jaw dropped. He spun around to ask the woman how she’d known these things –
Only to find the spot where she’d been sitting empty, with no sign she’d ever been there at all. He stared for a moment, processing what had just happened. Then he shook his head. “Well – a nutcracker it is,” he murmured, pocketing the paper and heading into the toy shop.
-TTV: You think that version of me might have suspected something if this is set after the Caliban incident.-
LOL, yeah, but even the genre savvy don't see tropes in everything. Incidentally, the timeline would be set right after Chapter 10 (which will be posted tomorrow, as per custom with this story), the Rapunzel/MST3K story. An invention of Doc's seen in that tale appears in a later installment of the special.
-HD: You just can't get enough Victor/Alice lately, can you?-
I haven't been able to get enough since I started shipping them.
-HD: . . . Fair enough.-
:p This is another pretty simple story, though it took me a minute to come up with this exact situation. I always knew it was going to have Victor as the protagonist, donating to someone in need because he knows all about being in that situation, but the idea of a generous fairy came a bit later. I credit remembering the old lady at the beginning of "No Rest For The Wicked," the comic that really inspired this tale, for putting the idea in my head. As for Alice's gift -- I couldn't think of a damn thing until I saw my own solider nutcracker sitting on my bookshelf and thought, "Eh, why not." I can actually see her liking something like that, really.
-M: *jokingly* Should we pass on a hint to DGVictor?-
Maaaybe. :p
And finally, ABC Family showed a two-hour special of a bunch of Pixar shorts this evening, which means G2 got pushed back a night. I'm glad we got a chance to sit down and watch them -- though I'd seen a good number of them, there were a few I hadn't, like "Jack-Jack Attack," and all the early shorts. (Pixar made me feel bad for a UNICYCLE. What the hell.) The Mater Tall Tales were amusing too. Just wish there hadn't been so many commercials!
Oh, and another Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland trailer has come out. Film is looking interesting.
save_us_alice is a bit jealous that this Alice apparently gets armor when she fights. Me, I'm just wondering when the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts became the same person. (I've got a theory for this for "American McGee's Alice," but what this film's excuse?)
-M2: That sucks.-
