I'm Still In A Shippy Mood
Feb. 15th, 2010 10:32 pmSo let's have more Victor/Alice fic. Specifically, let's have Victor/Alice fic from the Anna Lives Miniverse!

16. Gloves – Dress You Up
“Gloves on or gloves off?”
Susan looked up at Alice’s reflection, startled. “Why, gloves on! No respectable lady would be seen dancing without her gloves.”
“Yes, but – I was just thinking, the dress doesn’t really need them,” Alice said, holding up a blue-clad hand for inspection.
“Nonsense,” Susan said firmly, going back to setting Alice’s hair up. “They complete the outfit. It wouldn’t be right for you to be seen without them.”
“I know, but. . . .” Alice frowned. “They make my hands rather warm.”
“They can’t be hot, they’re silk. The finest we could get.” Susan finished up and came around to look at her niece properly. “What’s really on your mind?”
Alice blushed a little. “Well – it’s just that I’ve been thinking a lot about this dance, and – Master Van Dort. . .and how nice it would be to actually touch him should we share a waltz. . . .”
Amused understanding dawned on Susan’s face. “Ooh, I see,” she said with a smile. She patted Alice’s shoulder. “It’s a nice sentiment, I suppose, but I think Master Van Dort would rather see you properly dressed.”
Maybe, though I think I’d prefer it if he wanted to see me improperly dressed, Alice thought, biting back a smirk. Even if he’d never admit it out loud. “You’re probably right,” she said out loud. “He’s polite to a fault at times.”
“Oh, I would never call being polite a fault,” Susan said. She brushed a little lint off Alice’s sleeve. “You look beautiful, Alice. I just know this ball is going to go well.”
“I certainly hope so,” Alice said, regarding her reflection critically.
“I know,” Susan repeated firmly. “Now, our guests should be arriving shortly – do hurry downstairs.” She bustled out of the room, all ready to play hostess.”
Alice lingered a moment, still looking at her reflection. She guessed she looked nice enough, with her hair pinned up and a little blush adorning her cheeks. But she was still unsure about those gloves. She pulled one off experimentally. The dress looked fine with or without them, in her opinion. But Aunt Susan would lecture her if she appeared down there without them. . . .
She sighed and shook her head. Honestly, why was she making such an issue out of this? It was only a pair of gloves. She would gladly wear the things without fuss –
If she didn’t remember the feel of Victor’s skin against hers, as he taught her to waltz, so warm and soft. . . . The way his long fingers intertwined with hers. . . . The steady pressure of his other hand at her waist. . . . And after they’d tripped, the heat that had suddenly blossomed between their skin. . . .
Alice stared a moment more, then gave her reflection a sly smile before replacing the glove and walking demurely out of the room. She’d keep the gloves on for now.
Whether they stayed on after Master Van Dort made his appearance was another matter entirely.
-J: Alice getting all dressed up is kind of weird.-
Hey, she has to do it sometimes. And not always unwillingly. :p Anyway, this is the chronological next entry in the Anna Lived Miniverse, and another one from Alice's point of view. We change to Victor for a couple of stories after this. "Gloves" always suggested to me a fic about dressing up for a fancy ball, but it took me a while to figure out what to write for it. Once I decided to do a little series featuring the "Anna Lived" world, things just fell into place.
-D: I see she's in blue again.-
Well, it just seems to be her color. There's not much to say -- just more hinting at the emerging feelings here. And as you can see, in this world, Aunt Susan is not particularly opposed to Alice and Victor as a match. It helps that they've gotten to know him as a friend of the family in this world. To be honest, apart from "Love Will Find a Way," the Liddells are never really that much against Victor. They're never all that fond of his parents (though Charles and William have a decent working relationship), but Victor himself is seen as okay. The Van Dorts are usually the problem for any Victor/Alice couple.
-MF: Wait a minute -- I remember you writing this big tirade for Charles when he catches Victor with Alice in "The Solicitor's Ward."-
That's because, at the time, he thinks Victor's a rake. Probably with good reason, too -- he doesn't know the circumstances behind the mysterious woman on the bridge. After it's clarified that Victor's sincerely sorry and genuinely loves Alice, he apologizes, and things get back on the right foot.
Anyway, not much else to say -- the title is from the Madonna song of the same name, though I'm not sure I've ever heard it. I was looking up song titles, came across this, and decided it fit the prompt and story. *shrug*
Oh, I just listened to it -- I have heard the song, I just never knew the name. Weird.
Today was a pretty average day, overall. We played some Scrabble Slam after dinner -- it's a surprisingly fun game. Both it and Monopoly Deal. Weird how you can translate that stuff to card games. Also, Mom's feeling better, and me and Dad feel fine so far, so hopefully there will be no sickness in my future. Which is good, as I'm finally starting to think up some questions for
dear_multiverse again.
-RPD: At last!-
Yeah, I know. Hopefully the RP characters will forgive me the absence.
-VD2: Well, they haven't left yet -- that's generally a good sign.-
I hope so.
