New Alice Playthrough On YouTube
Aug. 27th, 2010 11:59 pmBurningDogFace is taking on the game. He hasn't played it in seven years, and it shows. I keep yelling at the screen, telling him what to do. Yeah, I'm crazy.
Speaking of which, I have another 30 Dances fic for you, and a list:
25. Barefoot – Head Over Feet
“You don’t have to stay, you know.”
Victor continued fluffing his pillow, trying hard not to look too directly at Alice. It was a bit difficult, what with her just sitting there, in naught but her nightgown and robe, looking so pretty and desirable. . . . “I’m sure I can fall asleep on my own,” he continued, sneaking little glances at her. “I had that talk with Doc and Marty recently. And I have managed to do it before, without anyone’s assistance.”
“Fall asleep, yes. Stay asleep?” Alice leaned forward a bit. “We’re worried about you, Victor – me especially. I’ll feel better if I sit with you for a while and make sure you sleep for more than a hour at a time. And I think you’ll appreciate having someone around if you have another one of those horrid nightmares.”
“Well – yes, I suppose. . . .” Victor sighed and chanced looking at Alice full in the face. Keep your eyes up there, Van Dort, he told himself firmly. Being her boyfriend is no excuse for being a pervert. “It’s just – this is the first time I’ve ever seen you in your n-nightgown. I-I don’t know if it’s j-just because I h-haven’t been in the f-future long enough for my old i-ideas to fully leave, or i-if it’s b-because you’re my g-girlfriend. . . .”
Understanding dawned on Alice’s face. “Oooh. Well, that is why I wore the robe,” she nodded. Then she smirked. “But in all fairness, Victor, I think my nightie covers more of me than my regular dress.” She indicated the long sleeves and hemline.
“Perhaps, but it’s s-still bedwear.” He looked down. “I’ve n-never seen your bare feet before.”
“Neither have I,” Alice said, examining his in turn. She tilted her head. “How do you stay balanced on those?”
Victor looked at his own tiny feet for a moment, then back up at Alice with a self-deprecating grin. “I stay balanced?”
“Oh, none of that,” Alice scolded, getting up. “You’re not that clumsy. I don’t care what you or anyone else says.” She suddenly took his hands and pulled him into a playful waltz. “I’ve never had a better dancing partner, for one.”
Victor chuckled. “Thank you, but I feel compelled to point out you’re the one who’s admitted to having only two lessons.”
“Even still!” Alice let Victor twirl her. “And don’t go saying you’re the only partner I’ve ever had eith – ack!”
Alice abruptly tripped, falling onto Victor as she tried to regain her balance. Taken off guard, Victor collapsed onto the bed, Alice on top of him. “Aah! Are you all right?” he said, blinking rapidly.
“Fine. You?”
“Yes, just a bit startled.”
Alice nodded. “Good. Sorry about that.” She smirked at him again. “See, I’m the clumsy one here.”
Victor couldn’t help smiling back. “Alice. . . .”
“Are you two making a baby?”
Victor and Alice’s heads snapped to the side, eyes widening. Dee was standing in the doorway, watching them with innocent interest. “Can I play with it once it’s here?”
The pair just stared for a moment. Then they hurriedly sprang apart, blushing fiercely. “Uh – ah – DOC!” Victor called, trying and failing not to cringe. Oh dear, this is exactly why I didn’t want a girl in my room. . . .
-TTV: *facepalm*-
*giggle* Yes, I posted this one because of yesterday's subject about Victors and trouble sleeping. This is a muse-verse fic inspired by that period of time where DGVictor was having autopsy nightmares because of his powers (he and a friend were talking about it after fighting a zombie, and she happened to point out that most people wouldn't leave a supposedly-dead body in the street. . .). He sought help from the Nexus, and a friend there ended up telling Doc and Marty, who managed to calm him down some. Now it's revealed that these dreams were indeed happening at the Inkwell, and Alice wanted to help too.
-RPD: You're awfully mean to him sometimes.-
They're over now, right? Anyway, I was having trouble with this prompt before -- I wasn't sure how to get them into a situation where they'd be barefoot. I don't know when I came up with the idea of them dancing around in their pajamas, but it must have been about the same time as the "Victor's having nightmares" bit as I obviously decided to squash them together. I honestly don't think it's one of my stronger fics, if only because the dancing here feels a bit forced. (And if you're wondering why they're almost always waltzing -- I don't KNOW that many other dances. Quadrilles and swing are about it.) I do like the banter before the dancing, though, including Alice's line about her nightgown actually covering more than her regular dress -- I stole it for later use in "The Solicitor's Ward." And I quite like the end. Yes, Dee probably should know a bit more about human reproduction, but it's funnier when she's ignorant. Also, I'm certain Clockwork is delaying giving her "the talk," if only because his brain freezes up each time he realizes he's really explaining sex to a car.
-VD2: That is a very strange situation. I don't think I could do it.-
*giggle* True enough. As for the title, it's from the Alanis Morrisette song -- since they've fallen over again in this one (seriously, they do that a lot in these dancing fics), I decided to go with it. It's a nice enough song, really -- I'm pretty sure it's on their playlist too.
And here's the list of Victor sleep "torture" I mentioned yesterday! I needed to post that one to give the complete picture. I'm not sure if I'm as bad as I thought I was or no -- it seems I do it less than I first thought, but I hammer him when I do it. Poor "Solicitor's Ward" Victor gets it the worst -- let's see:
Bad Dreams, Victor?
Canon: Yes, there is a canon precedent for all this -- Corpse Bride takes place over at least two days, most of it apparently at night. Did you see Victor get a lick of sleep in all that time? (Him being exhausted and hungry would probably explain a little of his behavior.) Not to mention the kid looks permanently exhausted, with those dark shadows and slight bags under his eyes.
Fanon: The above and various fics about him being up in the middle of the night eventually led to my fanon about Victor being a chronic insomniac at the best of times. He's the type where it takes him a good while to fall asleep.
Stories:
Written
Bonds of Holy Matrimony – This one isn't posted yet, but it's complete. In the third chapter, Victor suffers from a particularly bad case of insomnia because of his unresolved feelings for Emily, then has a dream where he reunites with her and she reassures him he’s not an awful person for having said feelings. (I later added a section where Victoria goes through something similar because of guilt, so at least Victor's not suffering alone.)
Corpse Mask – Again, not posted, but it's all written. The first chapter (minus prologue) has Victor suffering a really bad day, which is capped off by worse than usual insomnia, which in turn leads him to discover the Mask’s powers. Due to the nature of said powers, he doesn’t get much sleep the next few nights either; Bonejangles eventually comments that he doesn’t look so good.
The Solicitor’s Ward – Another one not posted, and this one's the hard hitter. Victor has recurring dreams of marrying Alice before the day he’s to wed Victoria; he has various nightmares involving both the Queen and King of Hearts while in Wonderland; and he eventually fights and defeats the King in a dream while drugged to sleep. And trust me, those nightmares he has in the middle are pretty creepy stuff.
30 Kisses: Deeper and Deeper – SW world. This one directly features Victor's insomnia during a particularly bad patch. Alice eventually hypnotizes him to sleep.
30 Kisses: Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These – SW world. Victor rolls out of bed during an erotic dream about Alice, bangs his nose and feels plenty of shame upon awakening.
30 Kisses: No Place Like Home – SW world. Victor suffers a nightmare about the King’s death while sleeping in the old Heart Palace and wakes up screaming and crying while Alice tries to comfort him.
30 Kisses: And Baby Made Three – SW world. Victor (and Alice) have infant-related sleep deprivation -- at least this one's more pleasant, and he's not suffering alone.
30 Dances: Everything You’d Ever – Victor Horrible world. Victor has a dancing dream about Alice that turns into a nightmare, and has trouble going back to sleep afterward.
30 Dances: Head Over Feet – Museverse, RP characters. Fic centers around Alice staying with Victor because of the nightmares he was having back during the brief “Victor’s cracked out on no sleep” plot. You can see that above. XD
The Tale – NaNo 2009. When encountering the Jabberwock, Victor experiences his worst nightmare – being all alone in the dark, certain he’s hated by everyone in the world. This of course comes up in a future chapter. I suppose one could mention his horrific death visions as an honorary mention -- I was trying to stick with things that directly referenced sleep.
Fifty Sentences, Victor/Alice – 8 mentions Victor gets cold easily at night (16 elaborates he tends to steal the covers); 11 mentions his insomnia; 18 mentions Alice having to comfort Victor after a King of Hearts-related nightmare; 37 mentions the “wedding Alice” dreams he was having in “Solicitor’s Ward.”
Future
Reaper Man – Victor/Victoria/Emily story. Victor drunkenly cuddles both girls in his sleep after suggesting he could still marry Victoria as his marriage to Emily makes him a widower; he wakes up with a hangover and is horrified by his actions the night before. Things just get weirder from there -- and yes, the title comes from the Discworld book (though there's really no plot similarities -- it would actually have a bit more in common with Mort).
Down The Next Rabbit Hole – Sequel to “The Solicitor’s Ward.” Victor has a nightmare about being a bad father, a la Niles from “Fraiser” (Freudian Sleep -- it's about the five minute mark, called "Sweeney Tot"). This one's initially played for laughs, but quickly turns serious as Alice admits to similar fears.
Victor Through The Looking Glass – Classic Redone. Almost entire story is a dream based on the Lewis Carroll book, contains some nightmarish elements here and there. This one sort of squeaks in, given that I imagine it ending with an annoyed Victor strangling a hatrack.
Secundus – NaNo 2010. Victor has some trouble sleeping when he first arrives in Secundus; later has strange dreams that foreshadow his “going Creative” and becoming a Touched. I mentioned this one yesterday.
Abandoned/Undecided
James – Abandoned AU. Victor is tormented by nightmares involving cold water and someone crying for his help, and he also has a sleepwalking problem. Turns out both are caused by his dead twin brother – the dreams are memories of the day his twin died, and his sleepwalking is him actually being possessed by James. Creepy, huh?
Mad!Victor – Unfinished idea. Victor is slowly losing his sanity as a result of people not understanding his experiences in the Land of the Dead, and part of his symptoms include worse-than-usual insomnia. Eventually he starts refusing to sleep when he’s drawing his mural -- Victoria's luckily able to coax him down.
Wonderland Blood – Corpse Bride/American McGee’s Alice crossover. Victor shares Alice’s Wonderland dreams, including the nightmare that results when her house catches on fire. Eventually he goes catatonic too when he's called back to Wonderland to help her fight. I've kind of ditched this idea in favor of "Beware the Jabberwock," the crossover that has the Tim Burton's AiW plot.
RolePlaying: Victor’s mentioned in various threads he has trouble sleeping. And, as mentioned above, after fighting a zombie in the Rift, he started having recurring nightmares related to his powers and eventually sought help from the Nexus; Doc and Marty came to his rescue after hearing about it from Frostbite.
Man, I really AM mean to him sometimes. I have to give him some nice sleeping stories.
