Card Game Tomfoolery
Oct. 14th, 2010 11:08 pmSo, I got BTTF: The Card Game from BTTF.com today. The parents and I played a round earlier -- it's a fun enough way to spend a half-hour or so. (Though I think it'll be funner once we're all used to the rules and such.) My interest, however, lies in the nuances of the cards themselves. First off, the Fridge Horror isn't quite as bad as I thought -- it appears that at least a couple of people can coexist peacefully, as you only have to change certain Linchpins in order to exist. For example, Verne Brown just needs to get his parents married and make sure 1985-A doesn't happen -- Marty McFly's personal future can rock or suck without any effect. The Fridge Logic, however, is going strong -- as the original timeline is the timeline pre-movie AND includes Doc getting killed. So, ah, what exactly happened with the DeLorean. . . ?
-D: Marty patents it in my steed?-
Maybe. Damned if I know, really. I'm more interested in some of the info on the cards, including the characters involved in the game. Here, let me introduce you to the various people of the BTTF:TCG universe:
Marty McFly III - You have to make sure George gets some confidence and becomes a published writer, marries Lorraine, and that the gang is jailed in 2015, not Marty Jr. BUT this timeline apparently does NOT include Marty avoiding the car crash that broke his hand.
Jules McFly - No, I don't know why he's named Jules when we already have a Jules Brown in canon. Anyway, George still needs to get a story published, he and Lorraine have a happy marriage (15th anniversary is one of the Ripplepoints needed), and Marty needs to avoid the car crash so he and his band can start having successful songs.
Electra McFly - I have no idea about her name either. In her timeline, Buford kills the local blacksmith (ouch), Lorraine has to marry Biff, BUT Marty becomes a rock star! I'm assuming this is some weird variation on 1985-A.
Verne Brown - Our only canonical ID! His timeline is simple -- Doc has to go back to 1885, he and Clara have to get married, and he has to avoid being committed in 1985-A. Basically, Part III needs to happen.
Tiffany Tannen - Yes, you can play as a Tannen. In fact, you can play as two Tannens. Tiffany here has a timeline that includes Buford getting arrested for robbery, Biff getting the almanac and opening his casinos, and Marty Jr getting jailed. So, yeah, she's a 1985-A Biff daughter.
Buffy Tannen - Your other choice of Tannen. Like Tiffany, Buffy's timeline includes Buford getting arrested for robbery. Unlike Buffy, her timeline includes Lorraine and Biff's first date. Before you say anything, this can happen WITHOUT 1985-A. George and Lorraine kissing is a Linchpin, and if they don't kiss, Lorraine eventually goes out with Biff, and. . . . George also ends up working for Biff. So -- yeah.
Clay Strickland - Our favorite disciplinarian somehow reproduced. Clay's timeline is weird, though -- Doc's not supposed to go back and become the blacksmith, but the Ravine is supposed to be named Eastwood. ?? Doc's also supposed to be committed, so Clay is another 1985-Aer. With twisted history.
Darlene Needles - Okay, Verne may be the only one we see on-screen, but I'm almost positive we see Darlene's name on the screen when Needles calls up Marty in 2015. Anyway, this is ANOTHER 1985-Aer -- Doc's supposed to become the blacksmith, Biff's supposed win big at the races, and Marlene McFly ends up in prison.
Marlin Berry - Yes, this is Marvin Berry's descendant. Did they really need to name him after a fish? Anyway, where he's from, Clara fell in the ravine, but George becomes an author and Marlene becomes a rock star herself (she starts her first concert tour). Maybe he plays in her band?
Clara Wilson - And Goldie Wilson gets a descendant too! One who isn't named Goldie, no less. Clara's timeline has Eastwood Ravine, Biff opening an auto detailing business, and the Tannen gang jailed.
We don't know who's born to who, though you can probably guess Marty III is Marty Jr's son. For some reason, I see Electra McFly as Marlene's daughter -- don't ask me why. Jules could be either one's kid. It amazes me how many of the characters need 1985-A to come about in some shape or form -- when Doc and Marty destroyed that timeline in Part II, they erased from existence a lot of people! And it amuses me that we got some very minor characters' descendants in here -- who picked Marvin Berry to get a great-great-grandson?
Now, about the timeline cards -- most of them are just events from the movie. But a couple of them provide new information:
Row One: Doc and Clara married on September 15th, 1885. (They certainly didn't wait, eh?) And whatever the ravine is renamed, it's done on December 1st, 1885.
Row Two: As stated above, George and Lorraine kissing is a LINCHPIN -- you can prevent the kiss and have them not marry. Biff's birthday is given as March 26th, natch. We also learn Dave's birthday -- November 5th, 1963! XD Unfortunately, on the other side of his card is November 23rd, 1963, which is Lorraine and Biff's first date if you undo the Kiss Linchpin.
Row Three: George gets a short story published in "Amazing Tales" magazine on July 10th, 1965 (a time travel tale no less)/George goes to work under Biff on that date. March 15th, the day he either receives an award or gets shot appears, of course. We learn George and Lorraine's wedding date is December 7th thanks to the 15th Anniversary Ripplepoint. Unfortunately, the flip side is Biff and Lorraine's wedding -- that's right, the bastard apparently made her marry him on her and George's anniversary! August 24th, 1980 is when Biff opens up his business -- depending on the timeline, the Auto Detailing business or the Pleasure Paradise casino. May 23rd, 1983 is Doc being commended or committed.
Row Four: May 1st, 1994 is either when Marty and Jennifer marry at the Chapel O'Love or when the Pinheads's single "Chapel O'Love" hits #11 on the charts. Since future events still include Marty Jr either way, I'm assuming Marty and Jennifer still get married, just on an earlier or later date. October 21st, 2015 gains an extra milestone if Marty's a rock star -- his band's Greatest Hits album goes platinum! And then, on October 29th, 2015, Marlene can either be jailed or -- go on tour? Wait, isn't she supposed to be 17? So either she's touring with Marty, or she's a teen pop idol. Huh.
So yeah, if you need some "canon," you can borrow it from the card game. I'm actually thinking of writing a semi-angsty drabbles88 about it. And trying to resist the urge to come up with a Corpse Bride/American McGee's Alice variation. (Come on, brain, what timeline would I even use?)
Sims update tomorrow -- the Parkers provided me not only with the Head Good Witch of Twin Oaks Park, but also with my first skunk spray on their dog! Fun times, fun times. . . .
