Starting Off Christmas Week!
Dec. 19th, 2010 10:58 pmAnd I happen to have a couple of things for you. First, our "Week of Secundus Christmas" fic:
Day One: Tree
“Victor, what are you doing?”
“Trying to give you a nice surprise, Alice,” Victor said as he led his wife into the living room, hands over her eyes. “I really do think you’ll enjoy it.”
“Does this have anything to do with you practically locking yourself in your lab for two days?”
“Yes, actually.” He positioned her properly, then took his hands away. “Take a look.”
Alice looked. She was standing in front of their Christmas tree, which they’d been planning to decorate that evening. She realized Victor had apparently started early – there were tiny little lights speckled over the branches. She frowned slightly – they certainly weren’t candles, but she didn’t know of any electric lights being that small. . . .
Then one flew from one branch to another, making her start. She peered closer, to see the light sporting six legs and wings. “Lightning bugs?”
“Yes!” Victor said, smiling brightly. “I – I didn’t think you’d want candles on the tree, so I altered some fireflies to feed on pine sap and needles and to glow for an extended period of time and released them into the tree. They should last us until Christmas, but I have extra back in the lab, just in case.”
Alice looked back at him. “You did this – just so I wouldn’t worry about the tree catching--” She stopped, not really wanting to bring up the idea that had dogged her thoughts ever since they’d brought the tree into the house.
Victor’s smile faltered slightly. “Well, yes,” he said softly. “I – it’s C-Christmas, Alice. The last thing I want you w-worrying.”
Alice felt a warm glow fill her. She pulled Victor into a hug. “You – I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
Victor blushed brightly, but returned the hug. “Funny – I ask myself that same question almost every day.”
Alice grinned up at him, and pulled him into a kiss. “Just being yourself is enough for me.” She looked back at the tree, and the little fireflies flitting through it. “They are beautiful.”
Victor grinned rather Creatively. “Wait until I make ones that can glow different colors.”
Being as this is Victor's first Christmas in Secundus, and he arrives in the city in January of the Mystery Year That Ends In 5, this is obviously him post-going Creative. I thought fireflies doubling for Christmas lights was a nice concept.
-TTV: I like it, yes.-
-HD: And it's very kind of him to take into account her feelings.-
That's what makes him such a sweetheart. :) I figured Alice would always be a little hypersensitive to anything that could cause a house fire after the asylum. Hence the electric candles thing with the Inkwell tree.
Second, pictures of the gingerbread house Mom and I made today! :D

A frontal view. We had to remake this wall -- the first one fell apart on us. Our decorations include red and green M&Ms, Peeps marshmallow snowmen, Snowcaps, regular-sized nonpareils, and mini candy canes. Oh, and melted sugar for the windows. That thing in the front is a sled.

Side view. It took us quite a while to get everything settled -- Mom had to keep cutting off bits of the walls to get everything square, and small enough to fit.

Back view. The tree over there is our second attempt. Mom accidentally broke the first one by knocking it on the floor. Then part of this one fell apart, so we just glued together the three salvageable bits with frosting and put candy on it.

Other side view -- a better look at the tree. The green bits are M&Ms that were cut in half. And the whole thing is on tissue paper, which is over tinfoil, which is over cardboard.
Not too shabby, right? It IS our first attempt at this sort of thing, keep in mind. But I think it came out pretty well, all things considered. Mom's got it wrapped up now so it doesn't go bad.
So yes, compliments of the season, folks! Hope you enjoy!

Date: 2010-12-20 06:35 pm (UTC)I'm blaming the fact that I had a dream with Victor in it on you. He was sitting in my mom's recliner and we were talking about something I can't remember. Yeah, all your fault. *nods*
