World of Darkness. I'm copying it in four-chapter chunks to send to squonk.
-VD2: About time. Now get working on World of Light.-
I know I haven't updated since February! But there's schoolwork, and the SAT, and the damn fact I don't feel comfortable typing around my parents.
-VD: ???-
-D: What in the name of Sir Issac H. Newton-
My parents are constantly on me to write a book. They like my fan fiction, but I think they think I'm not good for not writing original fiction.
-VD: Just curious -- why don't you write original fiction?-
Because all my characters turn into clones of you and Marty. I love writing BTTF fiction. Is there anything wrong with that?
*sigh* Sorry if I seem grouchy. But the SAT is coming up in less than a week, along with my report card. I don't have to worry about report cards, but the SAT. . .
You guys want to know the truth? I DON'T WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE. I HATE the idea of more school. I could flip burgers for a living and not care a bit. But my parents are forcing me into this. Possibly I'll be thanking them later, but part of me wants to run away to Orlando and weasel my way into a job at Universal Studios.
-D: You'd never do that.-
Yeah, but I'd like to.

My parents -- my father, in particular -- always used to ask me when I would get published as I was growing up. It pissed me off at the time, since it felt like nagging, but in retrospect I think it was his attempt to show he had an interest, confidence, and respect in my talents. He was certainly pleased when I did eventually get published, though then he changed his tactics to telling me how I needed to promote myself, etc....

If you don't want to college, don't immediately go. Take a year off, work, and try to figure things out. If you go and do not want to, all you'll do is waste money, probably not do well, and be unhappy. I have friends who botched up their grades good by going to school when they didn't want to, and years later when they wanted to, it was hard to have schools take them seriously from those Ws and Fs. Although, being a teacher, too, I must say that education gives you options with your life. You don't need a degree to write a book, but you do need a degree to get a job that pays enough to support you while writing. (Since it takes lots of time and persistance to get to a place where one can live off the written word alone. Note that I am still not there at age 25 after a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a published book.)

Taking a year off between high school and college is a real good idea. In fact, that's what I did. I couldn't stand the thought of more school directly on top of high school, so I worked for a year instead. That year off made me appreciate the whole college experience more and I worked harder there than I ever did in high school.

Kristen is right in that having a degree gives you more options and a better chance to support yourself and your art. It is extremely tough to make your sole income from any form of art. I don't know about you, but the starving artist thing never appealed to me.

Really, though, you should talk to your parents about taking some time off. What have you got to lose?
