Gloomy Freaking Sunday
Aug. 25th, 2019 11:19 pmWoke up at 7:30 this morning, went to the kitchen to get breakfast -- and encountered my Mom on the phone, going "Oh my God" constantly. My first thought was that something had happened to a rather elderly friend of hers -- not quite. The victim was my aunt, who was apparently in a bad bike accident the other day (hit something on the road and flipped over her handlebars) and ended up with some smashed vertebrae in her back.
Yeaaaah, as you might imagine, the Canobie trip was canceled. We ended up going to the hospital to see her -- she's -- well, "all right" is far from accurate, but it could have been worse. She's not paralyzed, at least. She is, of course, in pain, and it doesn't help that they keep telling her she's going to have surgery, then delaying it. Especially since it means she has to go hungry because of the anesthesia (you can't have food in your stomach because of the risk of throwing up from the drugs they use to knock you out, which, when you're unconscious, is BAD.) *deep sigh* Currently it seems she's finally going to get into the operating room to have some hardware put in to help fuse her back and stabilize her again tomorrow -- fingers crossed it all goes well!
On top of that, the weather ended up getting super-gloomy today, as if to match the mood. Got all gray and chilly and drizzly on the ride home, and while the rain eventually cleared up and the clouds got more scattered, the temperature never really recovered from the mid-60s. Mom checked, and it was raining in the general area of Canobie as well, so even if my aunt had been okay and we had gone, we might have gotten hit with a washout, or at least lost an hour or two to drizzle. *sigh* So that all sucked.
We did end up doing something, though -- the bowling trip that we ended up not taking yesterday because Mom's feet hurt. Went to our favorite alley, and -- after the requisite technical issues (I swear, there's always some minor glitch when we first show up) -- bowled about five games over two hours. It was fun -- we haven't been in months because their summer hours are basically "late afternoon after Mom goes to work most days," but as she had today off. . . I started off strong in the first game, but Dad ended up making a last-minute comeback, and subsequent games didn't really show much improvement. Never won, though I beat Mom a couple of times, and never got a strike, though I picked up a few spares. Suppose that's not bad for someone who hasn't been bowling all summer. Kinda looking forward to when they switch back to their full-day winter hours, though, and we can go a little more often again. Gotta improve my game somehow! :p
I also got a chance to play some Fallout 4 today, though it was kind of an exercise in frustration -- mainly because I kept getting myself killed after stumbling across a nest of raiders along the riverside. So many grenades getting chucked and blowing me up! Blah. I eventually killed enough of them to get inside what I assume is their base (er, accidentally -- didn't actually mean to open that door), only to get murdered yet again after killing a bunch of glowing radroaches. On the plus side, picked up a sweet new shotgun from a bathroom trap I saw and disarmed before it could get me. And I got a "happy birthday" sweetroll from a marina I visited, that was part of an awful birthday "prank" where twin brothers who hated each other (but were sticking by each other as they were working on an escape boat together) both tried to kill each other on their birthday. Hey, more recoverable HP for me! (Unless the damn thing is secretly poisoned. . .guess we'll find out? I'm just glad the brothers' Mr. Handys didn't try to murder me for taking it. Especially since I just looked it up on the wiki, and they SHOULD have. . .but there's actually supposed to be THREE Mr. Handys on the site, and I only saw two. Maybe one of the hostile ones was already wrecked before I got there? Well, one less fight, I suppose, which is good.)
And I did watch a couple of videos: A "Fun With Shorts" about mailmen and how mail delivery works (or worked, at least -- I suspect the whole process is a lot less manual these days); and a RabbidLuigi video about financially successful games that weren't really that good (top two slots going to rather crappy minigame collections designed to help promote new hardware, meaning they were financially successfully mainly because people wanted the console add-ons they came bundled with). Both interesting stuff.
All righty -- gonna see what I need to clear out of my inbox now, then putter around on the web for a while. Particularly glad that I took the extra time off now. Gonna sleep in, then do some YouTube marathoning and play Sims 4. And hope that everything goes all right with my aunt. Ooof. . . Night all.

Date: 2019-08-27 02:52 am (UTC)*snork* Mom and I occasionally joke about needing them ourselves. I've gotten better though -- I generally hit the pins on at least ONE of my throws per frame! Just have a nasty habit of twisting my wrist and sending the ball off crooked. . .
