Not Quite As Good Sunday
Jun. 12th, 2022 11:23 pmAt least I got my eight hours in, but -- the weather wasn't quite as nice, and I didn't have quite as much of a chance to do everything I wanted. That being said, we had lovely pastrami sandwiches for lunch and excellent spinach pies for supper, the weather wasn't completely miserable, and I still got most of my to-dos done:
1.Keep up with the FO4 Playthrough Progression: Check – Victor, Alice and Piper talked to Hancock about what he knew about Nick (with Victor getting very sour upon learning that he and Piper walked right past the station where he’s being kept hostage when they first entered the Commons), and Hancock’s genuine desire to do good by people has won over both Alice (who apologized for comparing him to an Anarch baron who didn’t “walk the walk” before) and Piper (who admitted that Goodneighbor may be lawless, but it’s a hell of a lot more welcoming than Diamond City). From there, it was a pretty straight shot to Park Street Station (killing some ghouls and a super mutant along the way), and now the three are inside, having worked their way through the actual subway tunnels into the unfinished Vault 114, wiping out all opposition in their path! I have decided that the “Nocturnal” Legendary 10mm that Victor picked up off a Legendary Triggerman is a work of Tremere blood magic in this verse, and it’s now Alice’s gun. :) And the rest of it pretty much goes by what actually happened in my playthrough (minus the deaths), so you can check that out below for more details!
2. Keep up with YouTube Subs, Jon's Fallout video, and if possible the OXBoxtra lists in the WL: Four-fifths check! I thought I’d have enough time this evening for everything, but then I learned an awesome fairy-tale retelling that I was following on tumblr updated with its last installment (If you like fun fresh takes on “Cinderella,” here is the author’s masterpost), and I got caught up in reading that, so by the time I made it through the three OXBoxtra lists, I was going to massively “overrun” if I watched both (that is, stress myself out by watching videos too late into the evening when I had social stuff and other tumblr stuff to catch up on), so – sorry GrayStillPlays, I had to defer you to tomorrow! But what I got through was pretty great –
A) First up, all those OXBoxtra lists:
I. “7 Sarcastic Achievements to Make You Feel Bad” – Andy tells us all about achievements with a particularly sarcastic bent! From the achievement “Phew, That Was A Close One” in Doom Eternal (use the BFG on one single weak zombie and NOTHING ELSE) to “Next Time Swim Faster” from Mafia III (get eaten by alligators while swimming in the waters around the main city), to “Go Get Some Sun” from Call of Duty: World At War (level up all the way in the multiplayer TEN TIMES – basically, your reward for this feat is being told “stop playing our video game,” which Andy noted feels mean and against capitalism), sometimes, achievements gotta snark.
II. “7 Most Shocking Things That Happened to Your Hands in First-Person” – Luke and Ellen discuss some horrific things happening to one’s hands in first-person games! Yes, it is as horrifying as it sounds. Examples included your first time drinking the Devil’s Kiss vigor in BioShock Infinite (your fingers burn RIGHT DOWN TO THE BONES); Alyx getting her hands healed via multiple injections of alien go in Half-Life: Alyx (and she often has to hunt down the alien to goo herself!); and of course everything that ever happens to Ethan Winters in his two Resident Evil games (the specific example was his hand being sliced off in Village, but the other incidents were mentioned). I made sure to point out that the other BioShocks should also be featured for the bee plasmid that has them crawling through your flesh. Fantastic plasmid, HORRIBLE thing to look at. Don’t let me down, Commenter’s Edition!
III. “7 Times You Made the Game Unwinnable With Your Nonsense” – Mike and Andy (Jane doesn’t seem to do the list videos anymore, which confuses me) talk about times where you, by mucking around or trying new things without regard to consequences, made the game unwinnable, trapping you forever in a single area. Miss your meeting with the Imperial agent – a meeting you have an in-game MONTH to get to – in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall? She’s fucked off, and you’re trapped with no main quest to complete. Linger in the lobby of the shopping mall long enough in-game in Dead Rising to prevent the zombies getting in when you leave? The main story no longer exists, leaving you nothing but side missions (and no, you can’t stop that one woman from trying to go out and get her damn dog, because you WILL have to move eventually, if only to get to the chopper). Go around murdering everyone you see as Qui-Gon Jinn the Jedi in the tie-in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace game? Anakin will refuse to deal with you, stranding you both on Tatooine. . .and, as Mike points out, stopping him from ever becoming Darth Vader. So, strangely, having Qui-Gon Jinn go Dark Side ends up being for the betterment of the galaxy as a whole! Who knew?
B) Then it was time for Jon of Many A True Nerd and his latest Fallout 4 video – “Fallout 4: The Drunken Dragonborn!” This was a short one-off video showing Jon exploiting the HELL out of a glitch he discovered recently in the game – the fact that you can boost the Luck SPECIAL stat to absolutely LUDICROUS levels. Reason? Well, first off you can max out your luck at character creation to 10. Then you can grab yourself some Tattered Rags to drop it to 9 temporarily to use the “You’re SPECIAL!” book in Sanctuary to boost it to 11 (best way to do this is apparently get Nuka-addicted Sully in Diamond City over to Sanctuary and give him some new clothes, as he has a set). You can also grab the Luck Bobblehead from Spectacle Island by the Castle to add yet ANOTHER point, and then layer that with some Luck-boosting clothes (like Sully Mathis’s undershirt and jeans), a magazine that boosts your Luck by 1 if you’re traveling with a companion (as he went to Diamond City, Jon picked Piper), and the completion of the Vault 88 quest to get the slot machine, which boosts your Luck temporarily by another point when you use it. This gets your luck up to a very respectable 15, and – crucially – probably gets your level up to at least 37. Why do you need your level to be 37?
Because, to properly break the game, you need to take all three ranks of “Party Boy/Girl,” which keeps you from getting addicted to alcohol, doubles all its effects, and then boosts your luck by 3 when you’re under its effects. And that +3 to Luck? That stacks.
That stacks with EVERY FREAKING DRINK.
Yes, unlike the other effects of booze, which cancel each other out as you go to each new drink, this one stacks CONSTANTLY. And since there are SO many types of alcohol in this game (regular variants AND ice-cold ones if you have that booze-chilling robot), PLUS two drugs that will boost Luck as well – drink and chem it up enough, and you can easily get Luck to 100. But why would you even need that?
Well, the build is called the “Drunken Dragonborn” for a reason, and that reason is the 2076 World Series Bat – a unique weapon from Jamaica Plains that has a tiny chance to send enemies flying (like the “Fus Ro Dah” shout from Skyrim, to explain the “Dragonborn” reference). How FAR they go, however, is dependent on a calculation – that includes Luck. Basically, if you use this bat with your luck that high, and its effect triggers, your enemies will go into space. And this is before Jon started cheating to get his character some Unyielding gear (which boosts all your stats by I believe 3 if you’re under 25% health, which is easy if you irradiate yourself enough), and to apply that particular effect on different weapons (including a Ripper chainsaw and a minigun). By the end of the video, his character had Luck 115, and was sending enemies flying so hard they were bouncing off the invisible loading walls. XD Not to mention his attempt to chainsaw a Glowing Deathclaw that ended up sending both of them flying across the map because of some VATS hit-chance-with-melee fuckery (basically your character can teleport to an enemy if you’re trying to hit them with a melee weapon in VATS). It was stupid and glorious and well worth skipping Happy Wheels with Gray for a night. Especially given I can catch up with that tomorrow. . .
3. Play Fallout 4 and get on the path to save Nick: Check! Picked up with Victor and Piper in Goodneighbor, and headed into the Old State House to chat with Hancock (overhearing him and Farenheit talking about how best to repel the next mutant attack in the process). As you can’t actually ask him about Nick and where he might be (his terminal indicates he knows where Nick is and what happened, but you can’t learn that unless you find a way to use/hack it without him getting pissy) like in my fanfic version, I just had Victor ask Hancock about his story (getting the “eh, I turned myself into a ghoul via drugs, cool huh?” version), his Institute speech, and if he had any work, which allowed him to pick up the “Pickman’s Gallery” quest for later. With that all sorted, and a quick look around the place (surprising number of drifters sleeping upstairs. . .near a “Join The Railroad” holotape, hmmm), it was time to head back out into the Financial District and actually start on rescuing Nick!
. . .first thing I heard upon exiting the front door was some raiders getting blown up by SOMETHING nearby. After making sure we weren’t about to be attacked, I had Victor and Piper sneak around one of the nearby buildings near Mass Fusion, avoiding some dogs and disarming a bunch of frag mines along the way. Got past the Gunners without incident, and then proceeded straight on, past the super mutants in one of the nearby wrecked buildings. Victor was able to snipe off the one on the ground floor and continue on without being spotted, then tried to get close enough/far enough up the overpass to tag it as a location, only to have to retreat when some enemies (probably Gunners) came close to spotting him. Instead, he and Piper continued up the road, past the Old Granary Burying Ground –
Cue a feral ghoul attack! Fortunately, Victor and Piper took care of them without much issue, and Victor got plenty of loot off their bodies, along with the dead Gunner in the corner of the actual cemetery. With that taken care of, and one quick sweep of the nearby bus later, they continued up the street, which came out right at Park Street station, nice! :D Took a moment to grab some more goodies (and read the plaque on the “New” State House), then, at 11:24 AM in-game, it was into the station itself!
And practically right at the entrance, we had four Triggermen, talking about Skinny Malone being weak for locking Nick up but refusing to do anything else with him. Victor managed to sneak up to the doorway and take them out with Righteous Authority, then started looting bodies and investigating the general station area. This included taking a poke in the bathrooms –
Where he got exploded by a grenade bouquet in a trapped toilet. I hadn’t looked up far enough to notice the tension trigger on the stall. *sigh* This put me back to before I’d killed the Triggermen – I had Victor take them out again (a little less peacefully this time), then started exploring rather more CAREFULLY. This got me a look at the terminal behind the cash register, which revealed the whole “this station was being turned into a vault” thing, the supply room beyond (Wonderglue and Duct Tape, yes), and various other goodies. And yes, I did go back into the bathroom, and this time I DISARMED the trap before it could fall on Victor’s head and explode him. Once I was satisfied I had everything I wanted, it was down the stairs into the old subway tunnels, disarming some more traps along the way. This had a lot more Triggermen, including a Legendary, so I decided to try throwing some grenades to make my life easier. First one worked well enough, even if it only killed one guy, but the second –
Well, I’m not sure if it ended up bouncing BACK on Victor, or if an NPC got lucky and managed to shoot it mid-arc, but Victor ended up exploded again. Put back on the top of the stairs, Victor just went in with Righteous Authority and Piper’s 10mm, and just killed them all the old-fashioned way. The Legendary proved to have a Nocturnal 10mm, which apparently has stronger damage at night and weaker damage during the day, which is – interesting? I don’t think I’ve seen THAT effect before. . .dunno how useful it’ll be to Victor, though, especially on a 10mm, but it might be good to sell, anyway.
With most of Malone’s men dead, Victor and Piper scouted the area – Victor unlocking some boxes and doors and gaining more Piper affinity (and some nice stuff like thyme seeds and useful junk – and if you’re wondering how he’s carrying all this, I ate my mod-added Apple Pie that adds +100 to carry weight for a while XD), and finding a second terminal regarding the firing of the employees and the purchase of the station by Vault-Tec – and found their way down to where Vault 114 was being constructed, containing a few more Triggermen for them to take out. Once they were all sorted, Victor popped open the door to the Vault, and took out the Legendary Triggerman on the other side. Went to see what he had –
Powered Synth Right Leg.
JACKPOT! At least for an early-days character – “Powered” is the one that refreshes action points faster, and “Synth” is actually one of the best forms of armor! I HAPPILY took that! From there, Victor and Piper took out the remaining Triggerman (wielding a baseball bat) and poked around for more useful junk (also finding the Vault-Tec terminal detailing the vault’s experiment – this was going to be “let’s put all the rich and high-class people in a vault where they have to live in shitty conditions with an overseer who will have no love for authority,” which – I think we can all agree Bezos and Musk at least should be shoved in a place like that), and then I ended with Victor improving the Synth Right Leg as much as he could and having a poop. XD Next time, we actually rescue Nick, yay! And then go see about fixing up Tenpines Bluff, because they failed defending themselves, boo. Ah well, I was already planning on a tour of my settlements after rescuing him. . .
4. Work on tumblr drafts: Check – caught up on all posts and tags over on Victor Luvs Alice this morning, then did the pictures and drafted out the posts for the next Chill Save update (Smiler Always and the rather meh Game Day Party at Foxbury)! Though it took me a little longer than usual to get the text sorted, as – well, not a lot happened on that particular day (the update itself is only two posts), and I was like “what do I even write here?” a bit. XD But it’s done now! And I also added that masterpost I linked above once I discovered the fic had been completed, because I have been waiting FOR said completion before I added it to my drafts, so I could present my followers with the full story. (And stop them sending “hey, when is this gonna be finished” messages to the poor author.)
And as for Valice Multiverse – one ask reply, nice and simple, yay! Always good on a Sunday where I’m a bit short on time.
5. Get in a workout: No check – I MEANT to, but between getting surprised with the opportunity to go out and play beanbags (below – we thought it was gonna rain earlier than it was) and typing up the Playthrough Progression notes, I ended up not having the time. Ah well. Pick it up tomorrow, probably with the other half of the Werewolves livestream!
Additionally:
-->Despite the weather regularly threatening rain, we did actually get out and play – and Mom FINALLY broke her losing streak by taking the first game! :) So that’s good! In fact, we each won once, though Dad ended up being ultimate champ – final scores were me 2-3-2-W-3; Dad 3-W-W-3-W; Mom W-2-3-2-2. Not too bad!
-->Made some damn back-ups after I’ve been meaning to since the beginning of the month! Need to get back into a proper schedule on that. . .but yes, everything is backed up now on a separate drive, including my latest save games and whatnot, so I can rest a little easier now should anything happen to this computer. (Which – nothing had BETTER happen to it, but still.)
Yeah, I think the back-ups are more important than watching all my videos. *nods* But yes, that is my day in a nutshell! And now I must be off to bed, as I do have work tomorrow -- but at least it is slightly SHORTER work, as it is the third and final "early release for graduations" day. Get myself a nice extra hour in the afternoon, and -- as stated -- should be able to use that to catch up on Gray and get a nice early start on my "Londerland Bloodlines." Hopefully it all works out! Night all!
