Not Exactly To Plan Friday
Jul. 1st, 2022 11:55 pmStarting with being suddenly woken up early because my Mom blew a breaker putting in her AC unit (something somewhere wasn't screwed in correctly when she plugged it in), and the sudden beep of my alarm clock coming back on jolted me out of sleep. And then I couldn't get properly BACK to sleep, because my brain just doesn't work like that. *sighs* And then there was drama when my parents went out to order more counter stuff (apparently the guy who measured our counters may have measured them wrong -- or adjusted things without telling my Mom), and my AC needed to be reset before the stupid thing would work, and it was really hot and sticky today, and -- yeah. Not exactly a perfect start to the long weekend. But I DID get a good chunk of stuff done off the old to-do list:
1. Keep up on the FO4 Playthrough Progression: Check! Wrote that up after my actual playthrough session, below. Victor, Piper, and Alice have discovered they are not alone in the universe (and that aliens are kinda dicks); found that the Starlight Drive-In is now the place you go if you want to have a barbecue, because that one chick who knows how to hunt is taking full advantage of her hunter’s outpost; and discovered that Victor accidentally helped Sully Mathis set up a new raider camp in Thicket Excavations about a month ago when he assisted the guy in draining the place. Victor is not happy about that turn of events, as you might imagine. XD On the plus side, he’s got a nice new alien blaster, should he choose to use it! And he’s close to meeting up with his friends at Sanctuary and the Red Rocket again, so that’s good too.
2. Catch up with YouTube Subs: Two-thirds’ check – it would have been more, but a) I started a bit late, and b) Call Me Kevin uploaded a video on the PS1-era Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone game that was AN HOUR LONG. He NEVER uploads videos that long! O.O So that and the “Rage To Riches” episode from James Turner today had to wait, but I managed to clear out the other stuff, at least –
A) Started before my workout with the latest Wyrd Sister Podcast on Raising Steam, the penultimate Discworld book! I was surprised to find this one was only slightly over a half-hour long, given these usually run about an hour or so, but after they did the recap and the discussion, it became obvious why – the plot is a bit thin on the ground in this one. Raising Steam has a lot of good scenes in it, but they don’t add up to much. As discussed by the sisters, there’s kind of two books in one here – the invention of the steam engine on the Discworld, and the dwarven-politics-as-terfs-versus-actual-feminists allegory – and the two plots don’t always mesh well. There’s stuff that gets left by the wayside, there’s beats where Terry quickly glosses over what might have otherwise been an interesting development. Though, of course, all criticism must be tempered by the knowledge that Terry was writing this near the end of his battle with Alzheimer's, so. . . Yeah, my personal opinion is that he knew he was writing against the clock and considered it more important to get the book done rather than refined. And I do have a soft spot for it as the book that brought together two of my favorite characters, Moist and Vimes, and allowed me to headcanon that they’re next-door neighbors. XD Last book next month!
B) Then, after supper, it was time for the James Turner build video from Wednesday I missed, which was him renovating the library lot in Moonwood Mill now that he could use more packs and build cheats and stuff! The actual library itself didn’t get a lot of updates – some more ducting and such on the walls, some more junk scattered all over the floor and grounds, and he ATTEMPTED to flood one of the rooms and put some ducks in it for funsies, but the water ended up refusing to cooperate – but the basement? Oooh, the basement. You see, James decided that what he wanted to build in the basement was the underground tunnels described in the pop-ups when you go down into them through the “portal potties” and suchlike. He’d already designed the base sewer system and the “frog city” room previously in a livestream he’d done, and in this video, he proceeded to build the holding cell with all the gouges in the wall (James assumed it was for a werewolf, but based on some of the lore I’ve seen about, I think it was actually for Vlad); the drop into a lower tunnel (creating an AWESOME sewer fountain in the process); the “garlic haven” where the werewolves were making stakes and suchlike (with beds both debug and not, and a woodworking table if you’re into that); and the big magical room with the mural (which – well, we don’t HAVE that mural in-game, so James did what he could with the Jungle Adventures stuff and some giant crystals XD). It all turned out VERY cool, particularly that sewer water fountaining into the lower level. I am quite duly impressed!
C) Then it was time for Fun With Shorts and an old previously-Patreon-exclusive: “A Great Big Bunch of You!” Which is an old Merrie Melodies cartoon from Warner Bros (classic rubber-hose style and everything) about a bunch of junk in a trash yard singing what I assume to be a popular song of the time, led by a puppet with a talent for mimicry and weird feet. It was – bizarre, and subject to a lot of riffs on how weird it was, as you might expect. XD
D) And finally, we had GrayStillPlays and Tall Man Run – though it really should be called “Tall And Wide Man Run.” The premise of the game is you’re taking your stick figure through an obstacle course, where you have to run into things that make you taller or wider, and try your best to avoid the things that make you thinner or smaller. Reason? You get catapulted onto another platform at the end, and must run through a bunch of barriers that make you small and thin again, keeping enough of your mass so you can execute a flying drop kick on the giant crash dummy at the end. And you can increase how many tall and wide multiplers you get with the in-game gems you earn. Gray, of course, upped everything as far as he could go so he could make many extreme body shapes. From the world’s chonkiest chicken nugget man, to basically a living stick figure pencil drawing, he ran his stickman down the course, learning about math all the way before executing the crash dummy time and time again. XD It was a very weird little game, but Gray’s attempts to make the wackiest-looking figures possible really made it more enjoyable than you’d think. XD
3. Play Fallout 4 and investigate the alien crash site before continuing the settlement tour: Check! Picked up with Piper and Victor in Oberland Station – my initial intention was to let Victor have a shower before they proceeded to the alien crash site, but – well, by the seventh real-world minute of Victor standing in front of the shower pipe while Piper wandered around behind him, I decided, “okay, either this is bugged out, or he’s SO DIRTY as per the mod I have that it’s going to take literally forever to clean him” and reloaded. XD So instead Victor and Piper went straight out into the world and – after a little futzing about – found both the alien ship and the alien cave. The alien itself was easily taken care of with a shotgun blast, and Victor picked up the blaster and 291 rounds from the alien’s corpse, for 333 rounds total. :) The gun itself has decent damage right now, but the scarcity of ammo means I’ll probably keep it for emergencies.
With the alien sorted, Victor and Piper headed back to Oberland to reorient themselves (and so Victor could use the outhouse there), then it was off over to Starlight in the wee morning hours of 12/2/2287! This involved first a trip over the railway bridge and a stop at Graygarden to pick up some crops and a bit of useful junk, then a sneak past the Corvega plant, where a few raiders still lurked on the very upper levels. (Or maybe they respawned, I don’t know – point is, there were a few people up-high who never actually spotted Victor.) They cut through Lexington and hit Starlight, where it seems just Victor’s presence was needed to reset all the stuff that was “broken” in the attack (yeah, the settlers can totally fix everything themselves if you don’t get there right away – you just have to visit so the game goes “oh yeah, everything’s good now”). Victor did take advantage of the facilities, though – picking up more crops (namely corn and razorgrain), finally swapping over to his Powered Synth Right Leg now that he could put some pockets on it (yay faster action point refresh), building the settlers another turret for a little more defense, and doing a lot of cooking. Like, so much cooking. Like, “hang on a second, there’s no WAY I had all this meat on me” cooking.
Yeah, Starlight Drive-In has a “hunter’s outpost” from my “Appletree” multi-purpose food mod, and holy HELL are they swimming in meat. Well, now we know which settlement to visit for a barbecue. XD Anyway, Victor got tired from all this about 11:15 AM, so I had him retire to his secret apartment behind the screen for a four-hour nap – which DID get him the temporary “Well-Rested” perk, which is nice! With their brains refreshed, Victor and Piper headed out to hit Tenpines Bluff and reset their stuff –
Only to run into a feral ghoul who’d pretended to be a dead body under the nearby bridge, next to the corpses of a scavenger and a brahmin. Victor was able to quickly kill the ghoul and loot the bodies – including, kind of creepily, milk the dead brahmin. O.o (Again, this is the “Appletree” mod, which – I think you missed something there, Leah!) But after that they were able to cut across the Rotted Junkyard Victor had cleared earlier and up to Tenpines without any other trouble. Victor reset all their stats, checked their stuff, then built them a third turret and left most of his junk there because holy HELL they had like NOTHING in their workbench. Cripes, guys, I was at least expecting some tatos!
And from there I decided I’d stop by Thicket Excavations and see how things were going with Sully – and found a bigger-than-I-expected raider camp! Like, Thicket Excavations is FUCKING DEEP when you drain out all the water. O.o Fortunately Victor is in possession of a very nice sniper rifle now, plus a companion who’s a pretty damn good shot with her 10mm, so clearing out the raiders (and throwing some grenades at the remaining mirelurks in the muck at the bottom) hasn’t been too bad. Especially since they’re very low level. Victor even found a Legendary and got an Acrobat’s Painted Metal Right Leg off him – a shame it’s the same leg as Victor’s Powered Synth gear! Meh. . . Oh, and Victor got another level off all of this, so I went ahead and got him “Science!” rank 2 so he could do some more fun mods to stuff like Righteous Authority. I left it with Victor and Piper trying to find the last of the raiders shortly after midnight on 12/3/2287 – we’ll clear them out in full next time, and then rescue Mutt and visit the rest of the settlements!
4. Work on tumblr drafts/Hypnokinky Valicer Stuff: Check – I’d intended this as an “either or both” situation, as writing would also be covered by the Playthrough Progression, above. And I did get some stuff done in regards to tumblr drafts –
A) Actually got the pictures sorted for the strange and unusual one-post Chill Save update for this upcoming Wednesday last night – still gotta draft out the actual post, but at least that’s done!
B) I did the usual “day-off catch-up” on the dashboard and tags of Victor Luvs Alice this morning, then wrote out a whole post of more Valicer not-incorrect-quotes (with a bit of a saucy bent this time) for my drafts before lunch. :) So that’s all ready to go whenever I want!
C) Had one ask waiting for me on Valice Multiverse when I took a look at THAT this evening, so that went into the queue for tomorrow!
Not too shabby! Nice to have all that under my belt.
5. Get in a workout: Check – another night on the bike, ending off the Oxventure Stream “Mule Be Sorry!” Which, as stated, more or less ended yesterday with Norman the cyclops paying the gang by smashing all of his various piggy banks. What else needed to be done?
Well, for starters, there was Dob’s dislocated arm, which was really starting to bother him now that things had wrapped up. Prudence managed a strength check to kick it back into place (with Merilwen fortunately making her Constitution saving throw not to pass out) – and then Corazon tried to help with a kick of his own, missed thanks to a low roll, and caught Dob in the yarbles again just as he started to play a happy little song. XD Dob has not had a good day today.
Anyway, with that sorted, and payment received, the gang rode their cart back down the mountain into the burning town of Brunhelm to play bowls on the village green! Their only competitors? The skeletons, who naturally were bowling with their own heads and then using their jaws to chew their way closer to the target (a smaller ball called a “jack,” from my quick Wikipedia search). The Oxventurers joined in while the villagers tried desperately to save their burning town (failing utterly because the skeletons, being VERY thorough, had set the freaking well on fire). There was some fierce competition, but by the end, the Oxventurers and the skeletons were tied. So Norman came down to preside over the final round (as per a special request from Egbert, who liked their announcer voice), which was a multiball tournament – the teams had 25 seconds to bowl as many balls toward the jack as possible, with the skeletons having their jaws tied shut to prevent further cheating. XD. Johnny then had the Oxventurers actually roll their D20s as many times as possible in 25 seconds (with the goal being to match or beat a 12) to see how they did. All told, they got 31 successes total. . .
Enough to beat the skeletons, who got 28! This was largely down to Corazon getting the most successes, which Johnny chose to interpret as Corazon finding a way to use some of Egbert’s bombs as balls and blowing up skeleton skulls. I assume Norman allowed this because of the previous cheating, and the skeletons did take their loss in good cheer before heading back into the hammer. XD AND, while all this was going on, the town crier who started this whole mess tried to sneak away – but Merilwen spotted him and grabbed him with Entangle, and Corazon FINALLY got a chance to put an arrow through an apple on the guy’s head (which actually went perfectly thanks to a good roll). And so the Oxventurers left the burning town, having not learned anything as per Egbert. XD Weirdest Oxventure yet. XD
However, this left me with some time to fill, so I also watched a couple of Simmer Erin videos to wrap up the workout! First one was her talking about how Sims 4 packs could be better if they integrated more systems that the Sims team seems to have forgotten about – like adding more likes and dislikes (and making them impact gameplay even more); adding new sentiments; marking items as moving eco footprints toward green or industrial for those who use that feature from Eco Lifestyle – stuff like that. She’s also of the opinion that future packs need to start adding traits and aspirations, which, yeah, definitely. And the second one was a super-quick one with her looking at the “roadmap” teaser for the next quarter that came out before the High School Years expansion was officially announced. *shrug* Keeping up with the Sims news!
So yeah, I remain behind on YouTube Subs, but other than that, pretty productive day! I definitely had lots of fun with the FO4 stuff. :) And now it's time to set up tomorrow's to-do list -- though, admittedly, this one might be a bit tricky because of the possibility of thunderstorms tomorrow. We'll see. But this is what I'm hoping to do:
1. Edit some more on my Hypnokinky Valicer Stuff
2. Catch up on YouTube Subs and, if possible, clear some stuff from the Watch Later
3. Play Sims 4 after picking up Werewolves and send Smiler to Moonwood Mill
4. Work on tumblr drafts
Keep your fingers crossed the weather allows for all of this! In the meantime, night all!
