Yeah, starting the update a little early to make sure I have time to get your birthday fic up -- it's been kind of one of THOSE nights in that regard. Mostly because I -- well, I SAY I got my period today, but it's been kind of slow in actually starting when it comes to actual blood flow. Like, come on, just START already so I can get this over with! Ugh. . . Anyway, that has nothing to do with your birthday. This does:

“Grampa! Grampa! Look at me! I’m skating!”

“I can see that!” George said, grinning as he watched his granddaughter make her way slowly but surely across the lake. “You’re doing great, Marlene!”

“What about me, Grampa? What about – ooop!”

“Whoops!” George hastily skated over to Marty Junior, sprawled face-up on the ice. “You okay there, kiddo?”

Junior sniffled, looking up at him with an expression George was very familiar with after three children and multiple grandchildren – that of “if you don’t say the right thing in the next three seconds, I’m gonna bawl.” “I keep falling over!”

“Marty can’t stand uuuuuup, Marty can’t stand uuuuup,” Marlene sing-songed, smirking over at them.

“Be nice to your brother – you were falling down a lot too the first time we took you guys out on the ice,” George pointed out, shaking a stern finger. He turned back to Junior. “And it’s okay, kiddo – I fell down loads when I first started skating. Keeping your balance is hard, isn’t it?”

Junior sniffled again, nodding through a very intense pout. “My legs keep going off on their own,” he muttered. “I’m really trying, I promise!”

“I believe you.” George hauled the five-year-old to his feet, checking him over for anything worse than a few bruises. “Like I said, fell down lots myself.” He glanced over at Lorraine, easily gliding across the other side of the pond, Marlene cruising along in her wake. “I swear, the women in the family have an unfair advantage when it comes to skating.”

That got a giggle. “Yeah, the ice doesn’t want their cooties.”

“Your sister and grandmother don’t have cooties,” George said, though without any real force behind it.

“Well, maybe Gramma doesn’t, but Marlene’s covered in them.”

“You’re twins,” George reminded him. “What does that say about you?”

“That she took all the cooties when we were born.”

George bit back a laugh. “I’m only allowing that because she made fun of you earlier.” He shook his head and offered Junior his hand. “Anyway – I got better with practice, and you will too. Here – why don’t you hang onto me for a little bit, and I’ll show you the ropes?”

Junior frowned slightly, but took George’s hand, hanging on tight. “Should be able to do it on my own,” he grumbled as George started towing him along.

“You will – you just need a little time to get your ice legs, or whatever they call ‘em,” George assured him. “Like I said – practice. You put in the work, you’ll probably end up an even better skater than Marlene.”

“No he won’t!” Marlene protested, turning sharply and coming toward them. “I’m the best, and I’m never gonna – whoa!”

Junior burst out laughing as her skate caught some invisible imperfection in the ice and sent her sprawling out onto her belly. “Now who can’t stand up?”

“Both of you, behave,” George said, crouching down to help Marlene back to her feet. “Though, yes, see, can happen to anyone. Now, why don’t you take my other hand, and we can all practice not falling together. . .”

Surprise, it's "George the grampa with his grandchildren on the ice!" :D I felt like I'd milked all the skating fic I was gonna get out of him and his children (hence why George and Lorraine were watching skating in your Christmas fic), but then realized, "Hey -- never did anything with the grandkids, did I?" So yeah, have some cute fic of a young Marty Junior and Marlene being taught the ropes by their grandparents. :) More Junior than Marlene, but as George said, the ladies seem to have a skating advantage in this family. XD Hope you like!

As for the rest of my day -- well, it's gone roughly like so:

Work – Very quiet day, in many ways (as talky coworker was surprisingly quiet most of the day) – ran a report for one guy on the phone and then pretty much did obituaries for the rest of the day. Which is good, because I got the first hints of my period after lunch. *sigh* I KNEW I felt even more tired than normal. . .hopefully the rest of the week remains relatively chill, because dealing with the red curse is not fun. >(

To-Do List

1. Get in a workout: Check – another night on the bike, another night with the 2021 Oxventure Holiday Special, “Hog Wild!” (With me finishing off the last five-ish minutes of the first half after supper, because why not?) The gang followed the spiral of the forest around and around successfully (with Egbert bringing up the rear and eating the “isotonic” snow – that’s the yellow patches, right?) for a little bit, with Johnny giving them two passes over the fast-flowing river that cuts through it for free – a fallen tree serving as a bridge at one spot, and some close rocks that could easily be jumped at another. The third one, though, didn’t have anything convenient for them to use to cross. And the river was twenty feet wide, so it couldn’t easily be jumped. After some discussion about what to do (Egbert not wanting to use Misty Step because that’s only him; Merilwen saying she has a spell that can increase someone’s jump distance – the double jump spell – and Dob immediately telling her to cast it on him so he could find a way to winch everyone over), Corazon decided he was going to do a cool pole vault and cut down a nearby sapling for the pole (further traumatizing Merilwen’s poor little vine), while Merilwen decided to shoot an arrow at a tree on the other side and asked Dob to steady her –

Only for the two of them to suddenly disappear and reappear on the other side of the river, by the arrow! Turns out her new magic bow from the “Tome Sweet Tome” adventure has a once-per-day teleport feature, and she wanted to test it out (as she doesn’t know how many people is the limit on the teleport). Naturally, the others were a LITTLE cranky about this – particularly Corazon, who sprang a little too readily into his pole vault and ended up stuck in the middle of the river. And then threw out his grappling hook, only to miss the trees – and then let go of the other end when Merilwen hooked it for him. No, he doesn’t want help, damn it, leave him alone. XD Merilwen used the bow and some rope to shoot back a sort of “rope bridge” for the others to use (in a kind of hand-over-hand way) – Egbert made it across fine, but Prudence’s grip slipped and left her dangling in the very cold, very-fast-flowing water, much to her annoyance. Merilwen decided the only thing to do now was to use her Control Water spell to part the river, allowing Prudence to walk out (and get a free drying from Merilwen as well) and Corazon to –

Topple over onto the other frozen bank, bruising up his ribs. XD Fortunately he wasn’t too proud to accept healing from Dob, which took care of most of the damage, and (VERY secretly) learned a lesson about friendship and accepting help in the process. Unfortunately, he and the others quickly learned something else, courtesy of Prudence spotting what looked like two figures coolly “surfing” on a giant turtle shell upriver a bit – namely, they were falling behind! They quickly started hoofing it again, though Dob started to fall behind with Egbert as his enthusiasm for killing the pig was low. For some reason, Corazon thought it would be funny to tell him that they could eat the tortoise-man because he was green and thus counted as a vegetable – then pointed out that Dob was green. Cue Dob shoving his entire hand in his mouth. XD

Anyway – next river crossing! The gang began pestering Egbert to see if he could summon a steed that would make crossing the river easier, with Prudence suggesting they even try going upstream to cut out all the walking on land and make it to the center quicker. A suggestion of using a flat alligator as a path was floated (ha), which Johnny admitted they would allow as an acceptable mount, while Dob was all for making a canoe, getting Merilwen to shoot ropes ahead into trees, and then winching themselves along (Corazon deeply regretted getting him that book about winches now). End result of all this was Egbert summoning a very lovely, very flat alligator that they could all sit on, and Merilwen shooting arrows from its shoulders so they (mostly being Corazon and Dob) could winch it along the river. And Dob kindly heating Egbert’s shield with Heat Metal to keep it warm, even though – as some sort of spirit-thing just masquerading as an animal, it didn’t really need it. (It did appreciate it, though!) They also thought about making a pulley out of Seal Gaiman, but Egbert objected to that, so instead Prudence managed to make one out of a tambourine Dob had. XD First shot was true and allowed them to get some good distance, second was not so great and forced them to slacken their speed a bit –

Just in time to see Argyle, Dirk, and Ricky in the undergrowth nearby, coming up to the next river crossing! A perfect opportunity to overtake or sabotage them! Dob decided that they needed a sail and ended up hastily sewing all his clothes together to make one, mounting it on his lute and – upon being told by Egbert that NO, he couldn’t make a hole in his shield – standing tall as the mast! A good roll allowed him to do a perfect split on the flat gator and anchor himself to its sides expertly.

This was followed by a crit 1 to keep a hold of the “sail.” Bye-bye lute! And bye-bye Dob’s clothes (except for a g-string Corazon managed to grab, which is arguably worse than Dob being naked). This probably would have been enough of a distraction in and of itself, but Merilwen ended up laying down some (VERY OBVIOUS, she wasn’t going for a meat grinder) Spike Growth at the crossing to stymie their rivals. And made it say something rude in druidic runes to boot. XD The rivals were quite put out, and the gang took advantage of them having to hack their way through the spikes to maintain their lead with a final good shot from Merilwen’s bow. All that remained was to get safely back to land! Which required an Animal Handling roll from Egbert to “parallel park” the gator (Alligbert, of course).

Animal Handling is a Wisdom roll. Cue Egbert getting a 4 ONLY by virtue of the fact that this is his loyal and telepathic steed and thus he gets proficiency in handling it, and accidentally getting Alligbert to do a barrel roll toward the shore. And then cue him get a nat 20 and basically not even getting a drop of river water on him. XD Corazon and Dob also fared well, but Merilwen was somehow flung from the head to the tail by the roll, and poor Prudence was dumped in the drink and had to be rescued with a rope from Corazon. Dob chatteringly said that she probably wished she wasn’t wearing all those clothes now! XD But they all made it to shore, and happily saw Alligbert off with fond wishes and a lot of “Sk8ter Boi” song puns from Corazon, ending in Merilwen’s vine patient being named “Avril Le-vine.” XD Johnny promptly hurried them into the clearing to end the first half. XD Tomorrow – hog time, hopefully! Let’s meet the meat!

2. Continue writing “Londerland Bloodlines: Downtown Queensland:” Check – not the full page I usually do, but I’m blaming that on period tired. I did get through Alice getting Dima to open the door to Boris’s quarters, subtly passing herself off as a professional assassin Venus could have never afforded, and then taking advantage of his shock over seeing dead Boris to Obfuscate and slip out unnoticed. Wonderland thinks her ruse will work, but that she should keep an eye out for Russians, just in case. XD Just have to head back to Venus and get her reward now, then its back to pestering the plaguebearers!

3. Keep up with YouTube Subs: Half-check today – I got on the YouTubes late between writing and making hot chocolate, and both Call Me Kevin and GrayStillPlays uploaded about half-hour-long videos today (why is everyone I watch going longform??), and Kevin’s was the only one I could get to. I swear, I don’t know what happened to all my time in the evening. . .anyway, today’s video was “Steven Seagal: The Fraud and the Furious,” with Kevin talking about how he went down a rabbit hole of information about Steven Seagal – and found out that the guy is a terrible actor with an unintentionally goofy run; had his own reality TV show riding along with law enforcement and basically sounded like someone’s drunk grampa during all of it; is so obsessed with his “tough guy” image that he won’t do anything that makes him look weak (like, if he was gonna do a skit on SNL, he had to be allowed to beat up the other characters); but at the same time he is now an overweight old dude and will sit down in every movie he’s allowed to sit in; is a big supporter of Putin, even if Putin doesn’t particularly like him much; and got involved in promoting crypto and got fined a stupidly small amount. Yes, it is very clear that this guy is a shithead, and Kevin had a lot of fun making fun of him and telling embarrassing stories he’d learned. And ending the video with a straight-up diss track! Because he’d always wanted to make one but never had a jerk bad enough to diss before. A very amusing little video (I had to finish my hot chocolate early because I kept giggling while watching), and I wouldn’t mind more “Kevin Talks About Celebrities” content. :P

4. Get my tumblr queues sorted: Check – with some effort, I am good on both of my tumblr blogs:

Victor Luvs Alice – finished up the six-part Harvestfest Chill Save update (completed the penultimate post before my workout, then the last one after Call Me Kevin) and got that in the queue, along with a lot of Valicer headcanons and a funny post I found about FO4 settlements and showing them off “home improvement show” style. XD I’ll decide on a Song Saturday tomorrow!

Valice Multiverse – another day dry of asks or fandom stuff to reblog, so I reblogged my own “master post of sexualities for Victor, Alice, and all the people I ship them with (plus LizJangles)” post into that queue. *shrug* It’s pertinent information! (Though it did make me realize I should do an update with Doc and Marty, at least for the Valice Multiverse version.)

And all that, plus general fucking around, took over an hour. I would like any portion of my focus back please, brain. *facepalm* Time to get to bed and hope I'm not feeling too dragged out in the morning -- night all!

Awww that was so cute! Thanks so much Vic! Heh Marlene would pick on Junior so bad...but no-one else would be allowed! Love the image of Grandpa George skating around with the grandkids.

Although I'm reminded I don't remember seeing my Christmas fic! I thought it was on Tumblr but obviously it was on DW. LOL what a fail. Off to track that one down and read it!
