Stuck Wednesday
Mar. 31st, 2021 11:26 pmGot up around 8:30, had my muffin, got dressed and made my bed while futzing around a little on the computer -- then, at 10, Mom and I went out and over to the CVS where I was getting my shot! About a half-hour's drive -- Mom waited in the parking lot while I got my mask on and went in. Checked in at the little front desk they'd set up, followed the path they'd marked on the floor, got called in nearly right away, got stuck, sat in a chair for roughly 15 minutes while they checked for side effects, then got to head out and go back home! Whole thing overall took about an hour and a half all told by the time we got home. So far, the main side effect from the shot has been a little stiffness and soreness in my left arm, so that's not too bad. And the people giving the shots were very nice. I'm just glad it's over with now, and that I'm halfway to the "properly vaccinated" mark. Next shot comes 4/21!
After that was all settled, I changed into more lounging-around pants and got settled in for the rest of the day -- and working on my to-do list! How did I manage?
1. Catch up on the Wyrd Sisters Podcast, stay current with other YouTube subs, and try to watch the two Hitman 3 videos from OXBox still in my Watch Later: Roughly two-thirds check – I forgot how long the two Hitman 3 videos were, and ended up spending some time over on TV Tropes instead of YouTube this afternoon, meaning I ended up skipping Kevin and Gray for today. Have to do a double feature tomorrow night! But of the stuff I did watch –
A) Started with James Turner, over in my subs, playing the new game The Tenants! Which, if I remember correctly, I first saw played by Kevin a little while ago. James, of course, played it a little more correctly. . .which still ended up with him making an actual, literal drug den because apparently that’s just a renovation job you can GET in this game! XD He also made over a few other places (demonstrating how little it takes to please some people in the process – I think the apartment he did the absolute least on had the best review), pestered his tenant to pay her rent while she pestered him to get rid of the constant plagues of rats in her apartment, and bought a new place, fixed it up, and got himself a second renter! In the middle of an (in-game) earthquake, no less – who expected that? :p It’s a cute little game, as I thought the first time I saw it – wouldn’t mind seeing more as a side project of his!
B) Then it was onto the Wyrd Sisters Podcast and their episode on The Truth! This was actually never my favorite Discworld book (though, as stand-alones go, it ranks above Pyramids, which ends up sadly forgettable in the long run), but they did a good job of summarizing the important plot beats and whatnot. Apparently Liz has a degree in journalism, so the book really spoke to her, and I’m glad about that. Maybe if you do have that sort of background, you enjoy it more. . . At any rate, as usual it was a fun little podcast, and I’m glad it’s in my subs!
C) Then, this evening, we proceeded onto the OXBox Hitman 3 videos that have been languishing in my Watch Later. Truly a travesty. . .at any rate, we had:
I. A pair of elusive targets, McGee and Trout – crooked politicians all the way back in Sapienza from the first game! And, as usual, we had “3 Ways To Play” –
Andy: The consummate professional, he – well, he wasted a BIT of time knocking out Rocco (one of the easy disguise opportunities in the main mission), just for old times sake, then set to work infiltrating the town hall to find the first target (having a meeting with some kid and his lawyer regarding the kid’s trust fund – none of our players paid that much attention to the story). He got himself a mansion guard costume, managed to infiltrate the offices, then – with some stealthy footwork and quick silent takedowns – got both target McGee and a potential witness unconscious and hidden before a SECOND potential witness came back in to peruse the books. He quietly snapped McGee’s neck before putting him in the box with the other unconscious man, then hoofed it out of there to get into the Caruso mansion, where the second target, Trout, was apparently wandering around while waiting for an audience with the owner of the place. Andy managed to track him down to a room where he was waiting with a staff member, carefully avoiding noticers, then managed to distract and knock out the staff before knocking out Trout and shooting him in the head before running for the speedboat out of the level. Four Stars, Professional ICA Assassin – as it was an elusive target, Andy didn’t spend THAT much time trying to hide his tracks, and the security tapes and him leaving Trout’s body around cost him a star. He decided not to worry overmuch about it.
Jane: Our lovely improviser, she stopped by the safe house to pick up an exploding golf ball, then headed for the basement of the ice cream parlor (in the same town hall as the lawyer’s office) to find the sniper rifle that she’d had the ICA stash there. She slipped into the place after one of the employees – only to find a guard standing right there, noticing her trespassing. She managed to coin him out of the way and knock him out, but then had to hide him, one of the kitchen staff, AND an extra person who spotted her dragging away the original guard before disguising herself as the guard and finding her briefcase with the rifle. She then proceeded to carry that up as she looked for her target, and found herself stumbling across the lawyer meeting by accident. She got in and ATTEMPTED to do what Andy had done – knocking out one potential witness while the other one was out of the room. . .only to be caught pretty quickly. She resorted to panic-stabbing McGee with a pair of scissors she’d picked up, running back into the basement to change into the kitchen assistant gear, then booking it to the Caruso mansion. She managed to get inside with her sniper rifle, and after finding Trout, started tailing him as he wandered through the mansion, trying to figure out the best way to kill him. Opportunity presented itself in a crumbling tower near the house – she got up there (skillfully tossing her briefcase through the narrow window on the side), knocked out the guards, then proceeded to kill time until her target finally showed his face. Took two shots with the sniper rifle to kill him, and she was pretty quickly rumbled – fortunately, she managed to escape (without her rifle, sadly) and ran to safety to the speedboat. One Star, Skillful ICA Assassin – too many unconscious witnesses and too many clumsy deaths! Poor Jane. . .
Mike: Our chaotic overlord happened across McGee while wandering around the overworld and encountering him having a conversation with the kid with the trust fund outside the town hall. He promptly went and got his explosive golf ball, then – well. After realizing his target, having gone inside to the lawyer meeting, kept coming to one particular window to stare out it, he decided to risk tossing said golf ball onto the awning directly outside of it and hoping blast radius would do the rest. One throw later, he was considered suspicious by the patrons of the ice cream parlor, but McGee was exploded, yay! Even he was shocked that one worked. XD He promptly headed over to the Caruso mansion, where he disguised himself as a housekeeper and went looking for Trout. He discovered pretty quickly that Trout very much likes to go and stand at this one spot, calling the view there “to die for.” This hubris obviously had to be punished. Mike found himself a propane tank in the garden shed area (having to sneak it away because he was technically trespassing), then brought it over to the area, dropped it in place, then lured away and knocked out the employee taking a smoke. And then left her on the floor, so someone could spot the body. XD Fortunately he was close enough that he could knock the OTHER staff member out and hide her – and from there, it was just a waiting game, as he waited out Trout going down to the wine cellars as the other part of his routine. Trout did eventually return to his view, though, and Mike was able to explode him – well, not OVER the wall, but onto it. But the guy died, his bodyguards had no idea what had happened, and he was able to retrieve his nice suit and head out on the speedboat! One Star, Professional ICA Assassin – an unconscious witness, and of course subtlety is never in Mike’s wheelhouse. But I guess it’s SLIGHTLY better than what Jane did? XD
II. And, at last, the final level of Hitman 3 – fighting your way through a train to the Constant as it zips through the Carpathian Mountains! Unlike the rest of the main stories, this was NOT a “3 Ways To Play,” as the level is fairly linear. . .but they let MIKE have the controls while Andy and Jane looked on, sooo. . . Yeah, it’s a good thing that this is the one level in the game where you’re not penalized at all for killing anyone other than your target – they’re all Providence guards, and they can all die without consequence! This did not stop Andy from trying to get Mike to stealth more, to – varying success. XD Meaning Mike didn’t shoot EVERYONE on the train, basically. He shot a lot of people (and complained about how slowly some of them were dying, thanks to their armor), and broke a lot of crowbars and rusty nails, but he didn’t slaughter them all! Well, directly, at least – who knows what happened when he detached the rest of the cars before ending the level. By flashbanging his nemesis and then launching a rusty screwdriver into his head. XD Two stars and the rank of “Henchman” for that! And also absolutely no understanding of the story – good thing we don’t come to OXBox’s Hitman videos for that. XD
2. Write some more on "In A World Of His Own": Check – even got it done early, tackling it after lunch. Finished off the Paino fight with Victor showing off the Orphica and Alice getting to put both her Ice Wand and the Teapot Cannon to work – though she also came close to having her arm chomped off, so not a FLAWLESS victory. Still, damn thing is dead now, and we’re just about a page from the end of the chapter, so I can finish that up on Friday! And then look it over and decide where I want to make any edits. We’ll see!
3. Play Alice: Madness Returns and get some more progress made on the Mysterious East: Check! Ended up doing this between getting my shot and having lunch – I’ve made it largely through the “stone and porcelain” portion of the Mysterious East, collecting goodies and fighting those nasty Samurai Wasps. Doing good so far, though I’ve been reminded of how much I hate Ink Wasps, because their spawners can be harder to spot than the Bolterfly nests. *grumbles* Though I actually had the most trouble with the rhythm game with the bells – kept hitting my notes too early! But I made it through, made it through the next Radula Room (slaughtering Bolterflies and MadCaps – nothing too horrible), and have gone up the Ruin-infested tree and made it to the cave of jade. Next Radula Room should be here, if I recall correctly, plus a memory. Doing good on the collect-a-thon front! Just have to keep it up. . .
4. Get in a workout: Check – another round on the bike, and another round with Jon's Fallout 4 Survival Playthrough! Caught up with Grills as he entered Vault 95 and started exploring – and the moment he said that the story had something to do with drugs, I realized this is the vault you have to take Cait to as part of her personal quest! It’s actually a pretty grim vault, as Grills discovered while clearing out the Gunners occupying the place – the idea was that it was a vault set up to help rehabilitate addicts, with a special detox chair for anyone past the point where Addictol could help them (this is what Cait needs for her Psycho addiction), and a special program (including group meetings and the like) to help with the psychological dependency. The Overseer was even elected fairly each year. For five years, the vault genuinely helped people try to overcome their addictions and become functional.
And then, once that time was up, the Vault-Tec mole exposed a secret stash of alcohol and chems, with the intention of observing and making notes on what happened. The fact that his terminal only has one entry, from right before he opened up the secret stash, coupled with the fact that the vault is littered with skeletons holding either weapons, booze, or drugs indicates it really didn’t go well. :( Jon found the whole story – indicating that you can’t really “cure” an addict – rather depressing and a pretty sad view of human behavior. Can’t say I disagree. (Also, in case you were wondering – no, he doesn’t even have Cait as a companion this playthrough – never went to the Combat Zone – and he admitted to not really caring about the companions’ stories – apart, obviously, from Nick Valentine’s. And even then, this playthrough seems to be the first time he ever completed HIS personal quest. Hence why he’s never been to this vault before. He commented that at some point he might do a one-off video or miniseries on getting affinity up all the way with each companion and doing the personal quests for those who have them – might have to see if he ever did!)
At any rate, clearing out Vault 95 finished up Grills’s attack on the Gunners, and that meant that it was time to finish up the main story and destroy the Institute! Though, first, he had to take care of an attack on his base – Episode 72 started with him running back to Hangman’s Alley to defend it from a Feral Ghoul attack. An attack that seemed not to really be happening. . .
Until Jon discovered the ferals in question were stuck in a nearby wall. Possibly the same wall Preston kept getting stuck in, in fact. Killing them proved to be a bit of a challenge – slinging grenades and molotovs at it only hurt a passing provisioner, so Grills had to resort to very carefully timing his shots to hit them whenever they partially phased through the wall. Two went down this way – the third actually managed to break free and properly attack, forcing Grills to kill it with panic fire from Slightly Excited. XD Seems that as we come to the end of this series, we end up where we started – with dumb jump scares!
With THAT finally out of the way, Grills teleported back to the Institute, as he did have one bit of business there to take care of before his ultimate betrayal. Namely, the fact that the Bioscience team had locked themselves in their labs, cutting off the food supply to the rest of the Institute in protest of Grills’s appointment as director. Grills pretended that he was going to handle this peacefully to one of the other scientists, then promptly told the BioScience team they were fools and set the synth gorillas they were so proud of on them, killing their synth guards to make sure they couldn’t adequately fight back. I assume after this comes getting the power source for Liberty Prime – though I’m not sure when they’ll actually set the giant robot on the place. The final episode is called “Ad Victoriam,” so I assume that’ll be the big battle. . .we’ll see! Still got like 40 minutes left to go on this ep first!
5. Keep current on tumblr queues: Check, though this was a super-easy one today – just had to find the tumblr post with the latest episode of the Wyrd Sisters Podcast in it and add it to my queue, then drop the posts back to one a day so the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday posts all fire on the correct days. Yay!
So yeah -- mostly completed! A little sad I ended up skipping Kevin and Gray (I have it on good authority Gray's was great today), but my brain just kinda goes "10 PM is too late for new videos" usually when it comes to YouTube. And considering I have a super-long weekend where I can catch up a lot more easily. . .not gonna sweat it. In fact, I'm just gonna add it to the next to-do list:
1. Double up on Kevin and Gray, and watch the Sims-related videos in my Watch Later
2. Write some more on "Londerland Bloodlines"
3. Play Sims 4 and complete another day in the Newcrest Adventures save
4. Get in a workout
5. Keep up on the Valice Multiverse queue
This should be mostly to totally achievable, I think. :) Now I'm going to answer whatever comments still remain, and then probably go ahead and spend some more time on TV Tropes, because I can just DO that now. Ah, the pleasures of a long weekend. . . Night all!
After that was all settled, I changed into more lounging-around pants and got settled in for the rest of the day -- and working on my to-do list! How did I manage?
