crossover_chick: Doc looking very sarcastically over his shoulder (BTTF: in a sarcastic mood)
[personal profile] crossover_chick
I went to bed at around 1:40 AM this morning, expecting to wake up at like 9 AM or so as I usually do...only to open my eyes this morning, look at the clock, and see it was 9:55 AM. *facepalm* Of course -- on the Cleaning Saturday, when I don't really want to sleep in, I of course sleep in. And then a lot of the rest of the rest of the day was kind of stressful for one reason or another --

A) My eye was still tender and sore this morning from whatever was irritating it (though it's gotten a lot better since then, fortunately)

B) Mom spent most of the morning pulling apart the kitchen, cleaning everything and spraying behind the fridge and whatnot, because we keep finding ants in there AND WE DON’T KNOW WHY. We CANNOT figure out where the fuck they’re coming from. And even WITH everything she did today, when she and Dad went off to get rid of some old books and pick up some groceries this afternoon, right after they left, I saw an ant on the frame of the back door. *heavy sigh* Just the one, but fucking hell. Every bit of food at this point is in a sealed plastic container or can, so – I don’t even know. Ugh. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

C) We had a scare this afternoon with my parents' printer (which they need for their online business) not working -- turns out that at some point during the morning cleaning, a circuit breaker got tripped for the outlet it was plugged into. No, none of us could figure out how or why. It is working now, but it was a Bad Moment.

D) During all this, Mom did some laundry, which meant I kept getting interrupted in what I was doing by laundry-based tasks. Like, I'm happy to help, but it was kind of annoying to walk into the kitchen looking for a snack this afternoon and get immediately asked "hey, can you go move the colored load from the washer to the dryer, I totally forgot." Meh

E) And of course there was the usual amount of "hey, look at all this absolute bullshit happening in the news" on tumblr, which -- yeah. Never helps my mood.

Yeaaaah -- not the worst Saturday, but definitely NOT one of the best. *sigh* Despite that, though, I still managed to accomplish some stuff --

Cleaning: Welp, as stated above, I woke up later than I intended, so I got to this later than I intended, starting just before 11 AM – and despite listening to an indie/alternative rock playlist rather than an Oxventure episode of any description, I STILL didn’t finish the whole round of dusting, Swiffering, and vacuuming until 2 PM. Granted, I did end up taking a little extra time to dust behind some stuff I hadn’t dusted behind in a while, and did get slightly distracted at one point when the playlist strung three songs I really like together in a row, but – still. I’m thinking that cleaning’s just gonna take roughly three hours (give or take a half-hour, especially if laundry is involved – no blankets or bathrobe this week, but I did throw my sheets and pajamas into the family load) and I’m just going to have to live with that. Though, hilariously, despite my late start and late finish, I still ended up finishing before lunch because of Mom's efforts to rid the kitchen of ants. Figures, right? Meeeh.

Sims 4: Despite my long cleaning session and subsequent late lunch, I did pop in here for another Offline Building Session on Smiler’s Potion Caravan. And I even managed to make some progress on it! Here’s what I accomplished today:

A) I adjusted the position of the wheels on the outside! Mostly because, after looking a little longer at the results of last week’s building session, I was like “I think the front wheels are too far forward – they should be behind the ‘front porch,’ shouldn’t they?” So I moved them back to line up with the front wall of the caravan! Which then led to me:

I. Making the “living room” at the back smaller so I could shift the big sliding doors on the side over a tile so the newly-shifted front wheels didn’t overlap them (didn’t like how that looked)

II. Subsequently making the little “side porch” under the doors a tile wider – I was just going to shift it over one to match the new door position, but then was like “hang on, now it exactly matches the width of the doors themselves – let’s keep it like that”

III. Making the stairs leading up onto said “side porch” two tiles wide so they’d be properly centered on the new, larger porch – given that the side entrance is where Smiler would be welcoming in potential visitors and customers, it probably makes sense to have larger stairs there anyway

IV. Discovering that I couldn’t subsequently move the back wheels back a bit so the axles would line up with the back wall of the caravan because they’d be SLIGHTLY overlapping the edge of the lot, and starting to experiment with moving the house around and rotating it so I could make the shift – only to remember “wait a second, using the ‘bb.moveobjects on’ cheat would let me move the wheels back, wouldn’t it?” So I used the “undo” button to put everything back where it was, activated that cheat, and just moved the wheels back slightly as I’d originally wanted. XD Good thing I remembered that, huh? Oh, MOO, you are truly the most useful building cheat...

B) I adjusted the placement of the windows on the build! Since the “potion-making” room was now larger, it got three windows placed on its back wall (evenly spaced, of course), while I centered the remaining window in the middle of the back wall of the “living” room. Looked a little weird from the outside, but that was always gonna happen. And I actually ended up changing the placement of the windows in the “potion-making” room again later on anyway, but we’ll get to that in a moment…

C) I considered my front door situation – specifically, if I wanted to stick with using the “Worn Wood” Life & Death door, or if I wanted to swap it out for either the Cottage Living “Hardcore Cottage Door” or the Realm Of Magic “Ordinary Door!” After comparing the three side-by-side, I came to the conclusion that, while the ROM “Ordinary” door looked pretty and had a fairly decent yellow swatch, it didn’t quite fit the vibes of the build, and that while the CotLiv “Hardcore Cottage” door did, I still preferred the “Worn Wood” L&D door as a “front” door – it matched the worn paint I was using for the main body of the caravan nicely. So instead I used the “Hardcore Cottage” door as the interior door leading from the “potion-making” room to the “living” room! :) That made life easier, definitely.

D) I slapped the Realm Of Magic “Totally-Lit Bug Lights” onto the front of the caravan, because I really wanted to use them and felt like they’d be a fun detail there. AND light up the tiny “front porch” area decently well. :) I also later put the Snowy Escape wall-mounted mailbox with a face there too, underneath the (lifted up) bug lights, because Smiler did need a mailbox and I still think they’d definitely have one with a smiley face. :)

E) I spent a very long time considering what sort of furniture and shelving should go into the “potion-making” room! Because it had to have the right alchemist vibes, don’t you know. This involved me:

I. Getting the plainer ROM cauldron from the styled kitchen room that came with the pack (“Alchemist’s” something – I don’t remember the full name of the room, but I do remember I found it by searching “alchem”) to compare it’s vibes with the fancier one. Like, the plain one probably goes with the build a bit better, but the fancy one has the right color scheme and magical crystals underneath instead of a dangerous fire pit – and it makes sense that, if Smiler was gonna splurge, it would be on their cauldron, right? I’ve got the plainer one in the build right now, but the fancier one is still on the lot, ready to be pressed into service as necessary!

II. Wondering if the “Tell-Tale Bar Back” from Life & Death would look cool in the build – I eventually came to the conclusion it didn’t quite fit the style, and also literally didn’t fit in the build thanks to where I had the cauldron placed XD

III. Finding the Crypt-O-Club “All Chained Up Shelving Solution” shelf (from their “Punk Pride” fan pack, I believe, based on the icon) while looking for good displays and really liking the fact that it looks like a shelf that you could flip up when not in use (because it’s attached to the wall with two chains) and putting one in the build for later

IV. Grabbing the ROM fancy scale, ROM dried hanging plants, a honeycomb bottle holder (which I think might be base game? Not sure), and ROM curio cabinet from the styled kitchen to see which items I wanted for the build – the fancy scale and the dried hanging plants ended up staying, while the honeycomb bottle holder (which was clearly for wine) and the curio cabinet (which was too big for not enough slots to put stuff in) ended up getting chucked

V. Filtering the catalog to show Realm Of Magic-only items to see what my aspiring potion-maker really needed, and deciding that they definitely had to have the “Classic Apothecary Cabinet” (for all their ingredients) and the “Incantation Escritaire” (another fancy cabinet, for more ingredients and a preserved bit of parchment with an incantation on it) in the fancy black-and-white swatches...only to realize that I couldn’t fit both items next to the cauldron, which is where I wanted them to go (Smiler needs easy access to their stuff while brewing!). I experimented with making both the “front porch” and the “living area” smaller to get more room, but ended up not liking how either looked (the “front porch” just didn’t look right, while the living area just seemed WAAAAY too cramped), which left me stuck for a moment...

VI. Then realizing that I could, you know, move the cauldron out of the corner I had it tucked in to allow for better placement of my cabinets. XD I ended up putting it roughly in the center of the big room instead, allowing me to line the two cabinets and the fancy scales (which I discovered would not place on the Snowy Escape counter I still had kicking around, just in case, but would sit on the tall “AbraCa Table” that I had left over from an earlier version of the build) up against the back wall within easy reach! Which blocked two of the windows there, so I moved them each over a bit so Smiler could keep their airflow. :P Very important when you’re working with alchemy fumes!

VII. Popping the ROM hanging dried herbs on the wall to the left of the front door; the Laundry Day broom and dustpan combo I still had hanging around on the wall to the right; and a couple of those “All Chained Up” shelves on the wall to the right of the big sliding doors on the side, full of the various potions I pulled out of the Debug menu – the lower one is pretty much on the floor, but I can’t really move it up any higher, unfortunately. I made that one white to help distinguish from the actual floor, at least. :p But they do serve as very good displays for all those potion bottles! :D

VIII. Getting some of the fancy ROM wall art (like the print of the “alchemy ingredients” and the long one that depicts the phases of the moon) and putting it on my spare chunk of wall for later, along with grabbing the Cottage Living “Forager’s Delight Bench” because I thought it looked cool. Not sure it fits in with the rest of the furniture in the main potion room, but maybe it can go in the “living” room? We’ll see how I feel!

And there we have it! Well, almost, because I have screenshots to share. :) Help you get a better idea of just what I’ve done! Here you go:

A Sims 4 screenshot of a bright yellow caravan with a mossy black roof, with the wooden wheels behind the "front porch" bit and at the very back of the caravan

A Sims 4 screenshot of the front of the caravan, showing of a black front porch, a yellow wall with a big black door, a pair of purple and gold bug-shaped lights, and a black mailbox with a funny face on it

A Sims 4 screenshot of the interior of the caravan, showing a big black cauldron in the middle of the front room, with cabinets full of alchemy supplies and a set of golden scales on a table behind it, plus some dried herbs and a broom and dustpan hanging on the parallel wall

A Sims 4 screenshot of the interior of the caravan from the opposite angle of the previous picture, showing off the two shelves hanging from chains on the other wall by the big sliding doors, one black one white, lined with many colorful potion vials

...admittedly, the wheels now look weird to me AGAIN, but – eh. I really do think that SHOULD be the most logical position for them! Maybe I’ll look up some inspiration again on my phone the next time I play and adjust from there! But it is coming together, and I’m glad. :)

Writing: Got another page done on “The Van Dort Vacancy” – Steven and Alan were successfully drugged, but unfortunately Steven – who worked on the equivalent of the drug squad in the Bluecoats before taking the Van Dort guard job – recognized the taste of slumber essence in the gin and started calling for help while Alan tried to stumble off. Smiler managed to shut Steven up with a hand over his mouth, and both men collapsed unconscious soon after, but – not the neatest start to the heist! No matter what Barnaby said. XD There was some talk about trying to hide them, but Kasimir didn’t think they had the time – and Victor backed him up, explaining that they weren’t quite at the vault yet, but instead about to enter the trap-filled hallway that led to the vault. And no, he didn’t know how to turn off the traps – he’d never been down here except when the traps had already been turned off – but he knew what and where they were, at least. As Kasimir said, “Good enough.” XD Tomorrow, Victor gets them past the first trap – a tripwire in front of the door – and then gets Smiler’s help identifying the second – pressure plate tiles in the floor! Should be fun – for me, anyway. :P

(Oh, and if you’re wondering about how Victor and company reacted to the whole “Steven and Alan saying that Victor should have hopped a train out of town rather than face his mother’s wrath, and that she would have only been happy if he’d returned as ashes in an urn” thing from the last writing session – Smiler did offer Victor a hug, but he said he’d take it later, as he really just wanted to get into that vault and show his parents that their traps WEREN’T impenetrable. *nods* Best revenge is embarrassing the fuck out of your awful relatives, after all!)

YouTube: Well, I didn’t get to anything in my Watch Later, but I at least managed to catch up on my Subs tonight by watching “Fun With Shorts: Responsibility” by Josh Way! Featuring a short all about the trials and tribulations of one Hank Evans, student at Lincoln High, as he struggled with being responsible – presented in such a way that I kind of ended up on Hank’s side. Like, yes, fine, the kid probably should have double-checked better what homework he was supposed to do for English class – but on the flip side, the teacher that assigned that homework did so at the VERY END of class, when everybody was too busy trying to get to their next class, and it looked like that poor kid had too much homework anyway. And yes, he should have prepared better for the debate against Wilson School, instead of relying on his “gift of gab,” but the way it was phrased, it was like all of Lincoln High’s hopes and dreams were riding on that one debate tournament, which I’m sure they were not! Add in that it was made very clear that Hank was struggling with being compared to his perfect-straight-A sister Vera, who’d attended the year before and who all the teachers loved, and – yeah. I feel for the teenager in this situation! Josh, meanwhile, felt for no one, and mocked everything and everyone equally – from calling Bev Anderson a “kiss-ass” for going to the English teacher for the assignment and then repeating it as she wrote it down, to saying that Hank getting stage fright “couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.” XD Good stuff – and nice to see him take on one of these shorts all in one go, rather than chopping it up into multiple videos! Hopefully that shall now be the norm.

So yeah -- not as much as I'd hoped to get done, but I hit all the important stuff -- and it was nice to work more on both the Potion Caravan and "The Van Dort Vacancy." Little bright spots in a very annoying day!

And now I should really get to bed, before it gets too late. Tomorrow, plans include working on my Victor Luvs Alice (N Smiler) drafts (again, hoping to clean up that post on the teen versions of the Valicer trio so I can get it posted sooner rather than later); playing Superliminal and replaying "Optical" and "Labyrinth" to find my missing fire extinguisher and fire alarm and get a few last achievements; working more on "The Van Dort Vacancy;" and combining my workout and YouTubery as usual to get through the next installment of Jon's F:NV YOLO Remastered: No Guns LP! Hopefully these are all achievable, and hopefully they will not be derailed by fucking ants. Night all.
