Just Some Fic Today
Apr. 6th, 2009 10:42 pmBecause today? Was definitely a MONDAY. Let's have Victor/Alice sweetness to counteract it.
28. Wada Calcium CD3 – Colorless
He was – pale.
Alice had stared at him for a bit when they’d first been introduced. She couldn’t help it. She’d never seen anyone so colorless as Victor Van Dort in her life. Even in this little village, where all the colors seemed to be rather washed out, most of the other villagers had at least a slight rosy tint to their cheeks. Victor’s skin was dead white, with dark grey lips and dark brown eyes. His charcoal suit with the dull red vest and dull blue tie didn’t help his complexion any. Even his tongue was greyish!
It didn’t seem natural for a young man to be that colorless, that pale. A young girl, perhaps – Alice had met plenty of young ladies who hid from the sun beneath parasols, frightened it would spoil their complexions. In some places, in fact, it seemed to be a mark of beauty, of breeding, for a girl to be as pale as a porcelain doll. But a young man like Victor?
To be honest, Victor himself rather reminded her of a doll. Not just because of his skin, either. His thin frame made him look fragile, ready to break at any moment. He was very quiet – silent, almost, unless forced to speak. And the way Nell fussed over his clothes and posture, posing him this way and that. . . No wonder she thought of him as like a doll, everyone else seemed to as well.
Still, there was something about him – some sort of aura – that suggested there was something a lot more colorful beneath his milky skin. Something she heard in his piano playing, saw in his eyes when he listened to her speak of Wonderland. And when he’d done those drawings for her. . . . She’d never met anyone who could draw Wonderland the same way she did. There was definitely something more there, something most people couldn’t see.
But Alice saw it. And it intrigued her. No, more than that – it attracted her. Made her want to take him out of this little village that was so dull and gloomy, to a place where he could see real sunshine, real colors. Maybe then he’d stop looking so much like a doll and more like someone real. Someone she could touch. Someone she could hold.
Someone she could kiss.
She didn’t know how she’d do it, or when. But she knew she would. Because someone like Victor deserved more than a colorless life.
Wondering what the hell the prompt is? Apparently Wada Calcium CD3 is some sort of calcium supplement over in Japan.
30_kisses mentions it's for the growing, the elderly, or those who don't get enough sunlight or fish. Victor certainly fits the "not enough sunlight" category, and thinking of calcium does tend to make me think of white stuff (i.e., bones), so I just went from there.
This is a "Solicitor's Ward"-verse fic, though given it's basically describing their first meeting, I figured it would be safe to post with minimal explanation. In a way, this could be seen as a companion fic to Suffocating. Both of them do have a similar theme of "outward appearance doesn't necessarily mean that's what they're like inside." I think it's safe to say Victor isn't as colorless as he appears. Not when compared to some of the other living, anyway.
