Somebody's made a post about middle names over in the Nexus. The poor boy may be in for some character spamming tomorrow. XD
-RPD: . . . Please tell me you won't join Simon to the Nexus just for this.-
I am tempted. Lucy too. Too bad Steve and Gary can't join in, but the only have one name each. (Unless you count their numbers). Dee -- hmmm. Does she have a middle name or not?
-D: Depends on if you count '1981' as a name, I guess. That's how she introduces herself.-
Heh, true.
-M: We don't ALL have weird middle names around here, do we?-
-J: I don't -- mine's just Jane. And your Dad has Douglas, that's normal enough.-
Yeah, they're not all crazy. You know what, let's have a list:
The Meaning of the Middle Names
BTTF
Dr. Emmett Lathrop Brown -- "Lathrop" was a family name back in Sarah's family tree (the name I chose for Doc's mom was Lanchaster). It's the same for Emily (middle name Carmichael) and, in NonTrilogy, Jack (middle name Merridew).
Martin Seamus McFly -- Seamus comes from the first McFly to settle in America, as hinted by canon.
Jennifer Jane Parker -- Jane comes from Jennifer's mom -- they thought it sounded nice.
Clara Emile Clayton -- Emile comes from Clara's parents liking the name "Emily" but deciding to spell it differently. A honeymoon to France shortly before Clara was conceived probably influenced that.

Corpse Bride
Victor Fitzwilliam Van Dort -- Fitzwilliam comes from Nell wanting him to have the middle name Fitzgerald, and William wanting him to have his name for the middle. This was their idea of a compromise.
Victoria Elizabeth Everglot -- Elizabeth comes from the Queen -- Maudeline wanted to name her daughter after the two greatest queens England had ever seen.
Emily Charlotte Cartwell -- Charlotte has no particular meaning beyond Emily's parents liking it.

Alice In Wonderland
Alice Pleasance Liddell -- Pleasance was the historical Alice's middle name -- I say it reflects a hope from Alice's mum on her personality

Originals
Mysteria Lilith Jones -- Lilith comes from the stories referencing Adam's first wife. Mysteria was born to Puritan parents, hence the weird name.
Josephine Venus Grey -- Venus is a holdover from Josie's original name, Jupitea -- she was born in Roman times and named for Jupiter and Venus, as in the Roman god and goddess.
Gypsy Rachel Robinson -- Rachel is just a name Gypsy's parents liked. They were a bit crueler with their other daughter, unfortunately, who was named April May after the months and the rhyme.
Simon Arthur Garfunkle -- Arthur is another name the parents just liked -- they didn't realize the whole thing with the singer until too late. Simon also has a brother, named Carey Casey -- apparently the Garfunkle's weren't particularly good at naming kids.
Lucy Autumn Leech -- Autumn comes from a) Lucy's Mom having slight hippie leanings, and b) Lucy being born in September. (It was going to be Emilie, after the singer who inspired her, but I decided the last name made for a funnier middle)
DeLorean 1981 Brown -- It's her model year -- she considers it her name, and nothing will change her mind.

Mildly crazy, huh? Mind you, some of those names ARE canon, or close enough to -- Doc and Marty's come from the Animated Series, while Alice's is from her historical counterpart, as mentioned.

now, slap my ass and call me dolores if i'm wrong, but wouldn't a puritan name be more like "Temperance The-Grace-Of-God-Is-Within-Thee Jones"? i honestly can't imagine a puritan couple that would name their kid "lilith" considering the way the story of lilith goes. unless they were secretly witches. are they secretly witches?

Probably -- my justification for Mysteria's first name is that she was born shortly after a sermon about the "mystery and wisdom of God," and she considers herself lucky she didn't get something like Wisdoma.

And you know what, the minute I wrote it here, I thought, "Uh-oh, I think I've got something mixed here. . . ." Hmmmm. They're not witches, so I'm either going to have to change it or figure out who in the family would want "Lilith."

see, "Mystery-and-Wisdom-of-God" would be a good puritan name and actually runs more along the lines of puritan naming systems. maybe "Mysteria" is a nickname for that, because who the hell wants their parents going, "Mystery-and-Wisdom-of-God, it's time for dinner!"

lilith was pretty much the original feminist (she wanted to be on top when she and adam did it, so god kicked her out), so traditional abrahamic religion tends to paint her as a baby-eating whore, and i'm not exaggerating. she was said to steal babies. although she comes from jewish midrash tradition more than a christian one, so her parents might not even know who lilith was or what the name meant.
