I'm posting now because the weather has taken a turn for the thunderstormy again, so who knows how long I'll be able to stay on. But I couldn't let the date I picked for Victor and Alice's wedding anniversary pass without comment. So here's some anniversary fic:

10. #10 – Ten Years And Counting
Their tenth anniversary.
Their tenth anniversary, and Victor had forgotten.
Not that Alice blamed him. She hadn’t remembered it herself until she’d happened to glance at a calendar and saw the date. She’d stood there staring for a moment, dumbfounded. Ten years together. Well, more than that, but ten years as official man and wife. Where on earth had the time gone? Then Chester had called for her and she’d had to put it out of her head.
Now that she had a moment to herself, she sat at the kitchen table and pondered it all. Ten years. It seemed like both such a long and a short time. On the one hand, everything was so different now. She’d been 19 and Victor 20 when they’d married. Now Victor was 30, with the bags under his eyes more prominent than ever and just the slightest touch of grey at the edges of his hair; and she was 29, with the beginnings of crow’s feet and feet that ached more often than not. They’d gone from living in the families’ houses in England to building their own place in Wonderland. And they’d gone from two young people living together to a full family of five. Yes, there had been a lot of changes.
On the other hand – she could remember their wedding day so clearly. It seemed like just yesterday that she had walked down the aisle and exchanged vows with Victor. And then they’d had Chester, then Lucille, then Lorina – and how on earth could all of that have happened in a mere ten years? It didn’t seem nearly long enough!
Alice shook her head. She supposed it didn’t really matter how fast or slow the years had passed. What mattered is that they had passed happily. Alice had never though she’d ever have a family of her own when she’d gotten out of the asylum. Now look at her – a wife and a mother of three, and very, very content (although she’d decided that, if she ever somehow managed to meet her younger self, she’d tell her that real insanity was having three children under the age of ten). In fact, she didn’t think she’d been this happy since she was a child.
And now, she and Victor had been together ten years. That was a milestone, wasn’t it? Perhaps she should track down Victor, remind him of the date, and suggest they do something special. . . .
A tap on her shoulder got her attention. Alice turned to see Victor behind her, holding a bouquet of wildflowers and smiling. “Happy anniversary, Alice.”
For the second time that day, Alice found herself staring. “You did remember,” she finally said, rising and accepting the flowers.
“Only after I saw you looking at the calendar,” Victor admitted with a blush. “I’m sorry I didn’t think to get you anything else in time. It’s just--”
Alice silenced him with a kiss. “Victor, all I need for our anniversary is you.” She quickly found a vase and water for the flowers, then grabbed his hand. “Come on, the children are busy in the playroom. Let’s celebrate, Mr. Van Dort.”
Victor grinned. “Lead on, Mrs. Van Dort.”

I wanted to do an anniversary fic for the #10 prompt as soon as I saw it. It didn't take me too long to hash out all the details -- this is the fic where I decided on all the kids' birthdays and stuff. The fake-out opening is a result of me reading way too much about wedding anniversaries and how women and men react to them. I wanted to do something with a slight twist on the whole "men forgets anniversary, woman is pissed" concept. The fic's pretty much the same as I first wrote it, though originally the kids were all down for a nap. When I realized Chester was about 8, I decided he was probably too old for naps and moved them to the playroom. (Even so, Alice and Victor are probably taking a risk by trying for nookie in the middle of the day, as "Tasty Treats" probably proved. ;) )

And now we'll see how long I can stay on. I hate this summer and its lousy weather.
-Muses: You're not the only one.-
