Because I couldn't get into Spymaster at all today. Stupid Twitter issues. . . .

2. News – The Coming Of The Stork
Alice paced the living room, wringing her hands. Victor would be home soon from visiting the White King. She needed a proper plan by then. This was some very big news she had to tell him, and she wanted to present it just right.
Topmost in her mind was his reaction to it. She thought that – most likely – he was going to faint. They’d have to be sitting down when she told him, then – and she’d have to be prepared to catch him. Victor injured himself enough on his own, she wasn’t going to add to his collection of bruises and scrapes. At least he wasn’t heavy. And she knew just how to rouse him too – the faint smell of sulfur and brimstone that emanated from the Demonic Dice would do nicely for smelling salts. She nodded to herself – she was well-prepared for a faint.
Of course, he could always go into shock as well. Just sit there and stare into space for a while. It would be much easier to rouse him from that, though. She’d just have to give him a good shake – or, if he was particularly stubborn, a gentle bop on the head with her croquet mallet. She imagined the face he’d make afterwards and couldn’t resist a giggle. She almost hoped he went into shock now.
And then there was the chance he wouldn’t believe her. A very small chance – after all, hadn’t he been the one to first admit the possibility? – but Alice figured she ought to consider it, just in case. Denial would be simple to handle – just keep telling him it was true until he believed it. Then prepare for one of the other reactions.
She sighed and looked down, placing a hand on her belly. However she reacted, she hoped it was happily. He’d seemed quite nervous at the prospect of having children. Truthfully, so was she. She had no idea what kind of mother she’d be. But at the same time, she was also happy. Excited, even. She really hoped he would be too.
She heard the front door open, and quickly straightened up, collecting herself. Moments later, Victor entered the room. He smiled at her warmly. “Oh, good, you are home! How did your visit to the doctor go?”
Alice smiled back, taking a deep breath. Here goes. . . . “All right,” she said, taking his arm and leading him over to the couch. “Though I think you’d better sit down.”
The smile vanished in an instant, replaced by Victor’s customary worried look. “Why? What is it? Is something wrong?” he asked, reaching for his tie.
Alice caught his hands and pulled him down. “Nothing’s wrong,” she quickly reassured him. “It’s just – remember your hypothesis earlier? About why I felt sick?”
Victor’s eyes widened. “Yes?”
Alice grinned at him. “It was true. I’m pregnant. We’re – we’re going to have a child.”
Funny – of all the reactions she’d considered, she’d never pictured him staring at her for a moment, then snogging her like it was going out of style.

-TTV: *blush* Honestly, I think I'd most likely do the "staring into space" thing. Though fainting's not out of the question.-
*makes a note of that for any future regular CB fics* It took me a bit to come up with something for this prompt -- I don't remember when I thought it should be about Victor and Alice's first pregnancy. I think this is the fic that inspired my thoughts of making "The Solicitor's Ward" into a possible miniseries (yes, even before I've written the first fic) -- I got to thinking about what could happen during the nine months, and things just built from there.
Originally I wanted the reveal of Alice being pregnant to be a surprise at the end, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it work properly, so I stuck it in the middle instead. After that rewrite, the fic ended up being a companion to Golden Afternoon, the fic where Victor asks Alice to marry him. I'd always planned to have Victor kiss Alice in response to the news, but the particular wording (including the use of the phrase "snogging" for kissing) came out of realizing this fic and that one had a lot in common (Character has important news for other character, worries about how to present it, finally just comes out and says it, other character kisses them silly). I think they make a nice matched set.
-MF: Where'd the "Victor fainting and stuff" thing come from?-
Well, I'd read one funny fanfic where Victor really DID faint after Victoria told him the news, but mostly it was just for humorous effect. I threw in the thing about the Demonic Dice smelling of sulfur and brimstone because -- well, they're DEMONIC Dice. What else would they smell like? And the image of Victor getting bopped on the head with the mallet gave me the giggles too.
-TTV: *rolls eyes*-
Anyway, pretty straightforward fic. The title was another toughie -- I didn't come up with one until I abandoned the "surprise, she's pregnant" angle, and even then it took a while. I finally just settled on this for lack of anything better.

Harry Potter movie tomorrow! I hope it's halfway decent, at least.
