Went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. I do have a few gripes, of course, but in the end it was good. And I have a lot more complaints about the theater, let me tell you. . . .
Movie Issues
-->Again, it moved rather fast and kinda skipped around plotwise. In fact, one subplot was completely cut out -- the whole Bill/Fleur romance. *wonders how the hell they're going to deal with that in "Deathly Hallows," because it's at the wedding everything starts going to shit*
-->Not a lot of Neville. :( Though there was a funny bit where the poor guy was pressed into service as a WAITER for the Slug Club Christmas thing. I reiterate -- they'd BETTER not cut out his big moment in DH. It's bad enough they ruined it in OotP.
-->The whole Half-Blood Prince thing? GLOSSED OVER. Snape doesn't even try to get the book away from Harry, they just stick it in the Room of Requirement. (Harry, incidentally, is also never seen getting in trouble for inadvertently carving up Draco like a Christmas turkey.) The big fight at the end with Harry versus Snape doesn't happen either. It's like two spells, Snape admits to being the Prince, and then -- they all just leave. They don't even bother trying to wreck Hogwarts. WTF?
-->Harry and Ginny's romance is not nearly as cool -- no big after-Quidditch game kiss. On the other hand, I really didn't like Ginny much in HBP, so I was actually glad to see they cut out most of the parts where (I feel) she's a real bitch.
-->As for Ron and Hermione's romance -- well, they kept in that nice bit with Ron mumbling Hermione's name in his sleep post-poisoning. But the canary scene -- sheesh, that just looks like ABUSE on the big screen! I don't care HOW heartsick you are, Hermione, that shit's not on.
-->Most of the Quidditch stuff got cut, which means most of the funniest scenes in said stuff got cut. Especially the stuff with Cormac McLaggen. Though they sort of made up for it with him vomiting all over Snape's shoes in the Slug Club scene. XD
-->Ron under the influence of a love potion -- HILARIOUS. He's adorable!
-->However, Rupert Grint? Do you have some sort of contract clause stating that you have to stay out of all the emotionally charged scenes that really should have all three of the trio talking? Because that final scene in the film REALLY got on my nerves, how it was only Hermione doing the talking. Ron was THERE, just -- sitting in the background for NO reason. Attention film producers -- it's a TRIO. Ron is not just the comic relief. He's very good at it, I'll grant you that, but this is not the Harry and Hermione show. (Though I guess this works as some sort of DH foreshadowing.)
Theater Issues
-->The snack bar was a mess. There were no Oreo smoothies, and not enough strawberry mix for three -- I ended up getting a root beer instead. (More on that shortly) Also, they had to scramble around for cups and stuff. It was really annoying from our side of the counter; I imagine it was the same on theirs.
-->Speaking of the root beer -- I ordered a medium, figuring that I didn't need that much, only enough to last me to the middle of the movie.
I got GIGANTOR, CUP OF THE GODS.
I'm not kidding. I order a medium, they hand me this absolutely HUGE thing that we initially thought might not fit in the cup holder! I didn't even finish it all -- and that's with giving a good portion of it to my folks once they'd sucked down their smoothies! I wish I'd had a camera, because, really! On what planet is GIGANTOR, CUP OF THE GODS a medium?! I almost went back to the counter once the movie was over and asked to see a large just to see how big THAT was.
-->You know that bit they play right before the previews, telling people to silence their cell phones? Well, the projector got stuck on that or something. We ended up waiting TEN MINUTES before it was fixed. Talk about annoying. . . .
-->Previews before the movie included "2012" and the new "Sherlock Holmes" movie starring Robert Downey Jr. Kind of odd things to show before Harry Potter, even a Harry as dark as this one. I might not have noticed as much if two little kids hadn't been sitting in front of us, though.
-->The print was TERRIBLE. There were scratches, grain, blurriness, and weird green lines zipping through it at odd places. It really sucked.
-->The worst bit, though -- right after Harry Sectum Sempras Draco's ass, the film -- I'm not sure what to call it. It was still playing, but the bottom quarter or so of the screen had migrated to the top. It stayed that way through the Room of Requirement Hiding the Book scene. Mom went and told someone, but we're not sure if someone fixed it or if it just fixed itself.
So yeah, it looks like we need to find a new theater for family movie outings. :(
Also, is anyone else having problems with Twitter and Spymaster? I know Twitter recently suffered a major attack, but while I can get into Clockwork's account, I can't tweet. It just goes into an infinite "updating" loop with no update. I managed to send a couple of test tweets with very few characters, but even that doesn't seem to be working at the moment. I also can't get into Spymaster -- it sends me to Twitter to allow use, but then Twitter just -- times out or something, and I can't get into the actual game. I know, this probably has something to do with the attack, I'd just like to know I'm not alone!

Date: 2009-08-08 04:48 am (UTC)Personally I hold out hope for DH, because it's big enough they had to split it into two movies. Which means it's likely that less stuff will be cut out, especially IMPORTANT stuff, although I'm kind of worried that they'll choose the end of part one to be in the middle of the boring wandering-in-the-woods part of the book. Which would suck.

HARRY: Well, most of them do.
RON: Hermione's is... pretty nice. I mean... if you're into that. Skin, and all.
HARRY: Yeah... Ginny's is... also... reasonably... adequate. You know... like yours.
RON: ... I don't want to talk about this anymore.
