Alicey Day
Jun. 13th, 2010 10:42 pmFinally got a chance to watch my Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland DVD. Movie's just as good as I remembered, and the special features were interesting. Though too short and too few. Damn you, Blu-Ray! (There was also a commercial for said format on the DVD, though weirdly it wasn't specifically for the Alice version. Huh.) Anyway, it dealt me a little inspiration -- I made some edits to the fic I thought up when I first saw it in theaters, so maybe that'll be making an appearance sometime soon. I also wrote some more on "Condolences," though I went ahead and skipped right to the Hatter part. Still not entirely sure what I'm going to do with that story.
-HD: Limbo is such an annoying place to be.-
I know. Must figure out something. I also thought I ought to post a Victor/Alice fic, so have another 30 Dances:
23. Jig – It Don’t Get Better
“Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you join the dance?
Won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, will you join the dance?”
“This has to be the strangest quadrille I’ve ever done.”
“Oh, it’s not that peculiar,” Victor said, glancing over. “It’s all the familiar steps.”
“Yes, but I’ve never performed them quite like this,” Victoria retorted, hopping on one foot and then the other in front of her partner.
“He’s had two years to get used to all of this,” Emily added with a playful smirk. “Of course he doesn’t find it peculiar.”
Victor laughed. “I suppose that’s fair. After living in Wonderland, it’s the ‘real’ world that seems strange. Though I’m sure you’ll think me mad for that.”
“Actually, not really,” Victoria said thoughtfully as everyone changed partners. “Even after I just visited this place before, the regular world seemed to not make as much sense as it used to.”
“The same happened to me,” Alice nodded. “I think it’s just what Wonderland does to you – it makes you all that more sensitive to nonsense. Only in the regular world, it tends to be irritating rather than charming. At least in the breathing half.”
“Oh, yes,” Emily said, rolling her eyes. “I remember chafing at some of the rules I had to follow when I was alive. Especially the restrictions they placed on women learning music. ‘Too passionate’ indeed. . . .”
“They’d never allow a song like this in Burtonsville,” Victoria agreed. “It’s far too lively.”
“It’s probably just as well – I don’t see how anyone could have danced to it, considering the dresses they made you wear,” Alice pointed out, before laughing as the Hatter picked her up and swung her around.
“Also true.” Victoria peered down at her boots with a small smile as they reclaimed their original partners. “I’ve discovered I actually rather like seeing my feet.”
“They’re very lovely feet,” her partner, the elder White Knight, agreed.
Victoria blushed. “Thank you, Sir Lloyd.”
“Please, I’ve told you – call me Christopher.”
Victoria blushed a deeper red, but obliged. “Christopher.”
Emily tittered. “I’d have thought you would be used to calling people by their first names now,” she said, letting Hatter swing her around. “Considering a good number of the residents don’t have last names.”
“Well, I haven’t had two years in Wonderland or your time in the Land of the Dead to change my conception of manners yet.”
“Give her a little while, I’m sure she’ll come around,” Hatter said with a wink. “It took you some time to call me ‘Richard,’ didn’t it?”
Emily looked like she would have blushed had she the ability. “That’s different,” she protested, ignoring Victoria’s giggles.
“You’ll both be fine,” Victor assured them, grinning. “I was shyer than both of you when I arrived, and look at me now.” That made everyone laugh.
The song wound down to its conclusion. Everyone applauded the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon, who bowed (well, Gryphon did – the Mock Turtle made a valiant attempt, but eventually settled for waving). Victor drew Alice close, then nodded at Victoria and Christopher and Emily and Hatter. Christopher was gallantly kissing Victoria’s hand, while Hatter was playing with Emily’s hair. “They look quite happy, don’t they?”
“They do,” Alice agreed. “I’m glad they agreed to come and live here.”
“Me too. I always felt a bit bad about how it all ended before.” He kissed Alice on the top of her head. “Now we can all find our happily ever afters.”
“Exactly. Speaking of which, we’d better get Chester back from the White Queen before she refuses to return him.”
Proof that the SW-verse eventually ends happily and no one can kill me!
-WRM: You've been worried about that?-
Have you seen some of the looks I've been getting from Tie-Twister Victor lately?
-TTV: Those actually have nothing to do with the angst and everything to do with -- certain marital duties.-
Well, at least I've assured that you can't kill me for the angst. This is set some time after the "Victor and Alice's first child" story in the Solicitor's Ward-verse. As you can see, Victoria and Emily have decided to come and live in Wonderland. A good chunk of the kid story is actually about getting them both there -- Victoria actually ends up committed to Rutledge for a while because she tries to walk through a mirror to get back. Victor and Alice, upon learning her predicament, try to rescue her, end up in the Land of the Dead, and remeet Emily, who admits to missing the place herself. Once they find a way back to Wonderland, they invite the girls to come live there too. Which, as you can see, makes the White Knight and the Hatter very happy. :) Seriously, I love my crossover couples.
As for the prompt, it took me a while to decide what I was going to do. I hit upon the idea of setting it around a performance of "The Lobster Quadrille" fairly early on. I think it was Victoria and The White Knight getting all cozy with each other that made me think it should be a SW-verse fic. After that, things just fell into place. There's not too much to say about it, except that the hopping on one foot, then the other thing? Actual quadrille step. It's what "set to partners" means when Gryphon and Mock Turtle are describing the dance. I also kind of forgot about Chester until the end -- I was focusing so much on the adult couples that it didn't hit me until a little before I finished that, "Oh, yeah, Victor and Alice have a baby. Where is he?" Fortunately, the idea of the White Queen being a doting sort-of-grandma saved me. XD
The title is from a Meredith Brooks song, which does not appear to be on YouTube. Huh. Anyway, after struggling with the title for a while, I was looking at random CD backs for songs. This popped out at me as appropriately cheerful, so there you are. Speaking of songs, the "Almost Alice" CD that goes with the new movie happens to have a version of the Lobster Quadrille on it! It's awesome -- I loved that song in the book. :D Now this is the version that I imagine Victor and Alice dancing to.
-HD: Calloy, callay! Always nice to see my fandom getting more attention.-
LOL, I'm sure. One other thing I wanted to mention before I go back to wandering the web before bed: the version of the "Almost Alice" CD I got had some bonus tracks on it (I think because it came from Hot Topic). The last one, Extreme, by Valora, is one of my new Victor/Alice theme songs. It just sounds so RIGHT to me. Seriously, listen to it and tell me you don't at least think of American McGee's Alice.
