So let's get right to it:

9. Ice Cream
Victor maneuvered his way through the little café, dodging the various people rushing to and fro. “Hey, Victor!” the girl at the counter greeted him, smiling. “The usual?”
“And a small root beer float, J.C.,” Victor nodded, taking out his wallet.
“Here with a friend or just very thirsty?” J.C. asked as she rang him up.
Victor grinned. “It’s for my girlfriend, actually.” Even as he said it, he could hardly believe it. A girlfriend. He actually had a girlfriend!
“Girlfriend?” J.C. arched an eyebrow curiously as she started scooping chocolate ice cream. “That’s a new development. Did you and Emily get back together? Or did your parents finally convince you and Victoria to hook up?”
Victor shook his head, quietly wondering how and why his love life had gotten so complicated. “No, this is someone completely new. Miss Alice Liddell.”
“Alice?” J.C. blinked a few times. “The daughter of the former dean? The girl who was in the asylum? The one half the boys are afraid of because she could probably kick their asses?”
“That’s her,” Victor confirmed, now starting to feel a little awkward. That was the one problem with telling people about his new situation. Whenever he mentioned who his girlfriend actually was, everyone seemed absolutely shocked. “She’s really not that terrifying,” he added with a frown. “She’s quite nice once you get to know her.”
J.C. shrugged as she started mixing up Victor’s customary double-chocolate shake. “I’ll take your word for it. Just never thought a guy like you and a girl like her would get together.”
“I didn’t think we would either,” Victor admitted. When Alice had first started to pay attention to him, he’d been, honestly, confused. Wasn’t this the young lady who loved violent video games, was equally hot-blooded and detached, and avoided people not because they thought she was weird, but because she thought they were boring? What on earth could she see in shy, quiet, nervous him?
But then, as they’d started spending time together, he’d discovered there was a lot more to Alice than one might think. She was an animal lover for one, with a particular fondness for cats and rabbits. She liked small children, and hoped to either own her own toy shop or write children’s books one day (“preferably both, if I can manage it”). And the stories about her “Wonderland” were fascinating. Much better than the real world in almost all respects – and not half as violent as some people would think, either. The girl had her sweet and gentle side, and she wasn’t shy about showing it to him. “But we fit better than you’d think.”
“Quite right,” Alice’s voice said behind him.
Victor jumped. “I thought you’d claimed a booth,” he said, half-turning to look at her.
“I’m waiting on those two to leave,” Alice said, pointing out a couple who were packing up their books.
J.C. handed over their drinks. “I still don’t see it. I mean, I know opposites attract and all that. . . .”
“Oh, we’re not complete opposites,” Alice said, taking her drink and putting her free arm around Victor. “Did you know he likes vampire and zombie movies? Or that he hates fish with an passion almost bordering on irrational?”
“You try growing up around a fish cannery and see how much you like the slimy things afterwards,” Victor retorted with a smile. “Not to mention eating them for most of your life. . . .”
“You actually eat things other than sweets?” J.C. joked. “See, that’s another thing – from what I hear, Alice, you don’t have much of a sweet tooth at all.”
“No,” Alice agreed. Then she gave Victor a warm look and a gentle squeeze around the middle. “But sometimes I’m in the mood for some.”
Victor felt his heart melt. “Lucky me,” he whispered, leaning down and kissing her.
“Oh, God, you’re one of those couples to boot?” J.C. said, rolling her eyes. “The world has officially gone mad. Scat! Away with you! Hie thee to your booth!”

-VD2: Goodness, J.C. Jones! Haven't seen her in ages.-
I know! I couldn't resist having her make a cameo. Anyway, this is the sequel to my previous offering in the Victor/Alice Modern Times AU, Gummy Bears. I figured, since I did something from Alice's POV pre-them hooking up, I should something with Victor post-them hooking up. Dunno why I chose ice cream, other than I had it on the brain and new he liked it. I think I was obsessing a little over having a root beer float when I wrote this.
-TTV: Heh. Worse things to obsess over.-
Very true. Anyway, I think I updated Victor and Alice pretty well -- the idea of Alice playing violent video games appeals to me. She's the daughter of the former dean because, well, that was Mr. Liddell's job. (Hey, and it's something they kept for "Madness Returns!" Yay!) The mention of her wanting to open a toy shop or write children's books are the jobs I keep planning for my Sims Alices. One day, one of them will be either a toy shop owner or novelist. Or maybe both.
-M: Personally, I think the whole thing with her liking little kids definitely shows that you wrote this pre-"Madness Returns."-
LOL, good point. How I was supposed to know she'd end up in an orphanage and be so snarky to the kids? Then again, she also ends up fighting Bumby to help avenge them as well as her sister, so. . . *wagggles hand*
Anyway, not too much to say about this one. I'm sure you can figure out all the jokes. It's just a silly, fluffy piece with an author avatar cameo. And ice cream.

In other news -- played a bit of Restful Springs today. Houndsditch continues to be irritatingly well-behaved, but things may be about to change. Mike's been openly sobbing about his aspiration these days. Is it horrible that I kind of hope there's a stove fire just so it might fulfill a fear and knock somebody on their ass?
-RPM: You really want this place to end up like Rutledge?-
Ugh, point. With Rutledge, the fires are starting to get completely out of control. I had another round of three last session. I've stopped documenting them all just because they're starting to get old hat. Maybe I should hope for someone finally wetting themselves or something instead.
Anyway, I should probably think of getting to bed soon. Still have a couple of weeks of school to get through. Oh, and here's a thing for you all to chew on: In my Fantasy class, we're reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; in my World Lit class, we're reading Holocaust literature. Talk about mood whiplash. . .
