Okay, That Was Frustrating
Sep. 25th, 2020 11:34 pmI just had to restart my computer a little bit ago because -- well, it was running like complete and utter ass. Couldn't open Google Chrome at all, Firefox kept going into "not responding" mode -- I couldn't even effectively open Task Manager! I SOMEHOW managed to get everything to shut down properly, and it seems to be running okay now, but. . .ugh. Couple that with continual little internet drop-outs throughout the day, and -- yeah. Part of me is thinking it might be time to invest in a new computer. Though damn it, I would really prefer to not shop for one until AFTER the worst of the pandemic is over. . .but given the stats, who KNOWS when that will be? Ugh. . .
Despite this irritation, I have to say that my Friday off was really pretty nice. Some highlights:
-->Had a nice parfait for breakfast (though this was prompted by the fact that I once again forgot to freeze some banana for a smoothie -- fortunately I remembered tonight while getting my ice cream, so I'm prepped for tomorrow)
-->Watched a good amount of YouTube despite my internet's best attempts to stop me (honestly, I don't know if that's my computer or just shitty service. . .)
A) Started off with a few quick and silly things:
1. An animation of the Among Us spacesuit creatures to one of the cold opens of Brooklyn 99, where detective Jake ends up identifying a killer via having them sing "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys (the victim's sister was hiding in the bathroom stall when it happened, and the killer was singing along to the song when he was murdering her brother). Sufficiently amusing if nothing else!
2. A short clip from Batman: The Animated Series where Joker has to pay a bunch of money to the IRS after becoming rich; turns out he's not willing to take on the IRS despite happily throwing himself at Batman constantly XD (To be fair, tax evasion is what eventually put Capone – and, if you're a BTTF extended universe fan like myself, Kid Tannen – in jail, so. . .)
B) Then it was onto Fun With Shorts and cloth! What is cloth? How can you tell various kinds of cloth apart? Well, according to this short, you BURN the fuckers and see what it looks like afterward. Also, wool smells like burning hair when you put it to a candle, which – should have been obvious? And rayon melts, which is probably GREAT for the environment. . .but this was the 40s (or early 50s), so who cares about that? It washes well! :p
C) And then it was onto that hour-long video from Many A True Nerd about Fallout 4 and lockdown! Though it turns out I misinterpreted the title – this was not an essay on people playing more of the game while in lockdown. Instead, Jon (who is our True Nerd) was doing a challenge in the game – can you survive, even thrive, if your Sole Survivor decides upon returning to Sanctuary from Vault 111, "Screw the main plot, I'm staying put and never venturing anywhere again?" Especially if you add in the extra challenge of playing in Survival Mode and thus needing to eat, drink, and sleep? As it turns out, you can! Though you do need to:
a. Have the Vault-Tec DLC installed so you have the vault sinks and whatnot, so you can get infinite fresh water from sticking one on a wall
b. have the Wasteland Workshop DLC installed so you can make cages to trap animals for meat (Jon incorrectly identified this as Nuka-World content, but I know my DLCs)
c. have low Intelligence and decent luck to get the "Idiot Savant" perk early and thus up your XP gains from stuff
d. scrap everything in Sanctuary and then build posts and toolboxes to infinity to get lots and lots of easy XP
e. do some save scumming around the root cellar behind one of the houses to eventually get the crystal you need to build a recruitment beacon for settlers
f. get the "Mr. Sandman" and "Cannibal" perks so you can quietly kill and eat settlers after robbing them of all their caps so you can eventually, with the help of "Local Leader," set up stores and cure your cannibalism thing (don't forget to make a sign once you're free of your dark cravings!)
Yeah it was – it was a trip. XD A lot of fun, and I even learned a few things! Such as settlers need jobs to be happy (suddenly why some of my settlements have happiness going down despite no threats and enough food makes SENSE), and containers' contents are determined when you enter the cell they're in (hence the save-scumming to get the right stuff from the root cellar). Aaaand, even better, this is the start of the "Season of Fallout 4," where John will be posting FO4 stuff every Sunday! Including an essay about why the game is actually pretty good! So one, something to look forward to, and two, probably gonna end up switching my Sims 4 and Fallout 4 days to take advantage. :D
D) Then, over at Atop The Fourth Wall, we have our first episode filmed in Linkara's new house! (In-universe explanation for the move? Linkara accidentally blew up the old one trying to rig defenses to stop Halloween from getting him (he has regular horror storylines in October that leads to him getting kinda paranoid around the holiday).) And it was one of those "it COULD have been good, but. . ." comics – "Emergency #1," the official tie-in to the Emergency! TV show. The firefighters respond to a warehouse fire that is filled to the brim with flammable materials, and learn that it also contained RADIOACTIVE ones too, which are mysteriously missing. And gee, there's a guy at the local hospital with radiation burns. . . It's an interesting story, but a clumsy execution, with everyone being WAAAY too casual about the radiation threat caused by the guy and his theft, and the lead firefighter character doing most of the police's work for them. Hardly the worst, but most definitely not the best.
E) And then it was time for Call Me Kevin and a look at Dead Rising 4! Specifically, its "Capcom Heroes" mode, which gives protagonist Frank West a bunch of costumes of other Capcom characters to dress up as – like X from the Megaman series, or classic Dante from Devil May Cry. Kevin happily wailed on many, many zombies dressed up in said costumes. It looked like a lot of fun, I gotta say! XD
-->Also played some Fallout 4 -- did some more stuff around Vault 81, including telling the kids about the first time Victor fought a deathclaw, then went out and found Ashes (and a caravan getting attacked by scavengers -- helped them fight a couple off), then zipped over to the Red Rocket to pick up my power armor so I could bring it to Vault 81. The cat was successfully reunited with her owner, and I started "Hole In The Wall" with minimal trouble. I have yet to encounter the diseased molerats, though, so I don't know if the mod I've got (which should totally protect me from the disease they carry if I'm bit in the Power Armor, or if Preston's bit) works yet. I guess I'll be finishing up the test on Sunday!
-->Played another five rounds of beanbag game -- unfortunately, I was off enough today that I didn't win a single game. :( Dad won four, and Mom managed to pull out a win on the fifth game. I did come second in the first three games, though, so that's something! I'll take whatever I can get. :p
-->Got in a workout, go me -- I've been neglecting those a bit this week.
-->Wrote a bit more on "In A World Of His Own" -- Victor and Alice are learning Fury's history and --
Hang on, I just realized this character shares a name with the dog the Mouse mentions in his poem from the original "Alice" book, and now I feel like I have to work this into the chapter somehow. *makes note*
ANYWAY, they're all just chatting, figuring our how Fury came to be and whatnot. I don't think this is going to be a very long chapter, at least in the rough draft, but hey, it's a start.
-->And I got my Victor Luvs Alice queue sorted for tomorrow and Sunday (sharing another Poets of the Fall song I found recently -- oh, and I discovered another awesome one this morning, so that's NEXT Saturday covered too XD)
-->And now that I can ACTUALLY DO THINGS ON MY COMPUTER AGAIN, I'm gonna get my Valice Multiverse queue sorted and answer DW comments. Whew. . .
Anyway -- mostly good day except for the computer glitchiness and whatnot. Hopefully tomorrow's a little better in that regard. . .got a bunch of Sims-related videos to watch in the Watch Later queue, and some Sims 4 to play tomorrow. Either gonna go back to the wizard tower and try to fix that up, or play around more with outfits for my intended Malkavian!Alice, or look for more Bloodlines and Fallout-themed content for my eventual challenge save file. . . We'll see what mood I'm in tomorrow! Night all!

Date: 2020-09-26 06:24 am (UTC)As for the virus, my estimate is that this crap is just gonna keep going for about two more years now thanks to all the mis-handling. Summer of 2022 might see the tail of it... IF they don't screw things up more. (Like re-electing Hair Twittler.)

I spent a chunk of my covid check on parts for something that should smoothly run Witcher 3 (and also Witcher 3). Still need to wrangle the space and time to put it together tho. I don't plan to pick up too much newer media after this year (I have a huge backlog as is, and very little new stuff acually seems to interest me.) but I wanted a system that would be capable of running Unreal 5.0 when it comes out soon-ish.

Date: 2020-09-28 03:43 am (UTC)Yeah, I checked out a bit of them last night -- I like how they've organized their tier systems and whatnot. Takes a lot of the worst guesswork out of the process.
Nice! But yeah, that's always the rub, getting it all together. . . I don't have really anything particularly new on my list either (I think the latest game in my library is Fallout 4, which came out in 2015 (though I didn't purchase it at launch) -- I may be purchasing Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines 2 when that comes out, but some of the news on that lately has been less than encouraging. . .) so it doesn't have to be SUPER top end. Just something that lets me keep the good graphics options and keeps the stutter to a minimum.

Date: 2020-09-28 11:10 pm (UTC)*nods* Just have to have my desk space ready and the time to do it. It really doesn't take long for the physical assembly. I think my last one took a couple hours. I had more trouble getting Linux running on it because I initially downloaded a bad install. With the gaming computer I'm still waffling a bit on OS. I really prefer Linux, but so much software is Windows only I'm probably better off saving for an OEM Windows install and making it a dual-boot system. Either that or learning how to run all the Windows stuff under WINE. I just don't know yet which would be the best choice in terms of cost/function/efficiency tradeoffs. Windows can be a system hog, but Linux can have a bug or two I've found itself (tho it's normally much better in most respects). Something I'm still considering (and that might be decided by whether or not another Covid check happens - another downside to ol' "Win-Doze". it ain't cheap.)
I think the newest stuff I have, currently unplayed, is Witcher III and some game I picked up at the same time on sale because I had a coupon called Vampyr (I think that's how they spelled it). And the Ghost Recon game I just grabbed. The most recent thing I've actually played is Bioshock. I have all three of those and at least one Mass Effect game picked up cheap, but then held off on installing them because of the whole limited installs thing the disks do. (I hate stuff like that.)
The vast majority of any gaming I do tends to be emulating much older systems so I don't have to move my old TV into my room somewhere to hook my Atari or NES up to. Plus no idea how I'd record games doing it that way.
Same here, I think mine fell firmly in Very Good territory when I was done, thanks to a few bargain hunts and good deals. Enough to where it would run any current game on the market this year without issues as long as I didn't try it on an extra-massive screen. So it should be good for 3d graphics work and running Unreal Editor, which really needs two monitors for best efficiency. The graphics card I got was even one of the ones that has built in raytracing (albeit on the lower/early end of that, still, should be enough to handle reflections and water and the like without locking up).

Date: 2020-09-30 03:01 am (UTC)*nods* I see. Well, that's good to hear -- it's just finding where you can FIT those couple of hours that's the problem, I'm sure. And see -- that sucks, hope it didn't take TOO long to solve! And yeah, none of us are a huge fan of Windows, but my games pretty much guarantee I'll have to get it on any new computer I purchase. *shrug* Survived this long with it, I suppose!
Oh, I've seen an LP of Vampyr! It's a pretty cool vampire game -- but be forwarned, you apparently CANNOT save and reload like normal, at least with the boss fights. The guy I was watching, Helloween4545, didn't complete a boss fight the exact way he wanted, and he apparently had to DOWNLOAD a fresh save to redo it. One of the reasons I'm unlikely to play it. And yes, limited installs suck too. :( WTF game, I paid for you fair and square! My gaming library consists of all three BioShocks, Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines, both Portal games, Fallout 4, Telltale's Back To The Future: The Game, Sims 4, and both Alice games. Fallout 4 and Sims 4 are my games of choice these days -- I've gotten really into the former, in fact. I guess I prefer that version of the apocalypse. :P
I'm not sure either. . .but hey, sounds like you've got a system that works and is fun.
That's nice. :D And yeah, I don't need an extra-massive screen either, so. . .sounds like you got just the system you needed! And oooh, raytracing, nice. . .another reason to try and upgrade from this thing, I'm thinking.

Date: 2020-10-01 03:19 am (UTC)I currently have no idea what my complete gaming library consists of due to a massive state of disorganization (something else being worked on) and games going so far back that modern hardware won't play them without something like DOSBox. It's pretty safe to say that if it was for any of the more popular 80's and 90's home consoles or handhelds, I probably have it somewhere or other in some condition or other. After that the odds start to taper down.
I don't know which of the Atari stack was my first console game (probably the little battle thing with the tanks, I think it came with the console), but my first PC game was something called 7th Guest. (I have the sequel 11th Hour as well.) Unlike certain childhood toys, very few games have gone missing. I have a LOT of vintage consoles, but no room to sit and power up the ancient TV they could still connect to. The only thing I can think of offhand that's gone missing and I have no clue where it is (opposed to having a vague clue that some of the consoles at least are in a couple bins in the back room and I'm half-sure which ones) is the silly Nintendo power pad thing you were supposed to jump/run in place on for World Class Track Meet. (I used to just kneel down behind it and pound the dots with my fists...)
Compared to old console stuff I have relatively few PC games, at least as hardcopies bought before I started picking stuff up on GOG and Epic. I've got a LOT I've picked up via sales and freebies at GOG and Epic that are just hanging out on my account until I assemble a computer I can actually play them on. Epic usually has one freebie every week or two. Not always something that sounds great, but I tend to grab all the ones I catch anyway. Got GTA5 that way. I've basically been racking up freebies for about three years now... so that's a lot of games built up even if a lot are older or not the most popular. Epic's current one is some multiplayer shooter called Rogue that I will probably never play... but it says free, so in my cart it goes before they change their minds, just in case someday I change mine.
I actually have NO idea how to check what games I have on my Epic account without running the launcher (which tends to freeze up on this ancient laptop, and will not run at all on the Linux media desktop... another point in favor of needing to save for a Windows install. I've heard it will run under WINE, but have yet to try, and if there ends up being another Covid check, eh, then I'll be able to afford a windows install.)
Ooo, more Epic freebies (checking my account because this reminded me. A little add-on for that game that was free, something called 3 Out Of 10, some shooter called Heroes & Generals WWII, Rocket League (soccer with cars?)... Hey! Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 complete edition! Might actually play that one. Sale ends tommorow at 11 am, here's the link in case you might want to snag that one yourself (tho probably running late and you'll miss it, sorry.)
https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/rollercoaster-tycoon-3-complete-edition/home
According to my GOG account I have 103 games with them. This includes all the Ultima games, most-to-all of the Wing Commander Games, Bioforge, Witcher III, and every free demo version they had on the site. GOG is my preferred buy site except when Epic gives me a coupon deal or has a freebie, because they don't do DRM stuff - you buy it, you download it, you do what you want with it. They even have older games and include DOSBox with them and the setup files already set for playing.
And all the freebies tossed in the cart and checked out, so I'd better get my sorry aft back to figuring out the best way to organize the nonfiction section of the media server.
PS: Epic did it again... Apparently 'buying' Rocket League, even free, hit a hidden promotion running till Oct 23 that got me another "$10 off any $14.99-or-higher game" coupon. They throw those out a lot. It's how I got Vampyr for $5. Got until the end of October to decide what to do with this one. And if I ever decide I want a big screen. I've been eyeballing projectors and then just get a big white curtain to hang somewhere.

Date: 2020-10-02 03:13 am (UTC)Oh wow -- you see, the only console I ever had was a Super Nintendo, on which I played Super Mario Bros and some Sesame Street games as I was a little one at the time. I've been pretty much exclusively PC since then, and it took me getting into American McGee's Alice on the strength of a Wikipedia article about the game before I branched out of Sims games -- specifically, SimTown, then The Sims and The Sims 2. I enjoy video games, but I'd never call myself a "gamer."
And your attitude toward grabbing games and such off places like Epic and GOG is completely different from mine, which is, "why would I get it if I'm pretty sure I'm not going to ever play it?" Don't care if it's free or not (though, yes, if there IS something I want, I'll look out for a sale). I tend to hyperfocus in on a couple of select games at a time anyway, simply because I also have limited time to game with my job. And with one of my staples being Sims 4. . . I actually bought Fallout 4 not that long after it came out (pretty sure sometime in 2016), but I didn't start playing it until last year because I also got all three BioShocks around the same time, and I had to make my way through them first. (Kinda glad that happened, though -- let me get all the FO4 DLC at once on another sale later on.) So, uh, yeah, no worries about me missing the sale in the link, as I wasn't planning on picking up anything new anyway.
GOG sounds good, yeah -- gotta love a site that doesn't do the shitty DRM thing! I'll have to keep them in mind for any future game purchases. And hey, nice work on the freebies, and the latest coupon! Get your money's worth out of Epic, totally. (Though I'd keep an eye on that launcher, I've heard it's not great even when run on a good computer? One of the YouTubers I watch was complaining about freezes and such when playing the third Metro game. . .)

Date: 2020-10-03 06:21 am (UTC)I don't really think of myself as a gamer, either, despite my wierd obsession with them. Mostly because I'm not particularly good at many of them. I die a lot, chronically fall down holes, get lost without a map even on 2d games, and generally tend to wander away from what the game wants me to do because I'm checking out the scenery, physics, or completely distracted by a minigame. I'm interested in the stories, and the game design more than the actual play... but I play to get the details I can't get other ways. (I have an ENORMOUS collection of screencaps from my first Bioshock "playthrough"... which had to be done with a godmode cheat so the stupid Splicers would quit interrupting me playing with/looking at the scenery. I think I spent part of the intro level trying to see if I could stack pieces of luggage on top of each other.)
Yeah, I'm something of a chronic digital hoarder of "stuff I want to get to someday". Same with craft projects, tho I'm making a little dent in that this year by finally having some desk space to work on (all it took was moving a second large desk into my room...) and scraping enough funds from surveys for needed supplies. And I'm hoping to get to the games once the new PC is together. Then (if I can get the launcher to cooperate) I'd like to at least attempt every game I picked up - with YouTube vids. So I consider then a (free) investment in that possibility.
I can't even run the launcher on this computer any more, which is why I now have no idea what games I actually have with them (tho, thankfully, looking at the page will tell me if it's owned or not so no risks of grabbing anything twice).
The next thing I actually want to pay money for off GOG is probably going to be the Creatures games, since they tie into Mosaic and are nifty little AI pets that I somehow missed hearing ANYTHING about in the 90's despite AI being something that has grabbed my attention since about age 4. GOG is also good for having a lot of older stuff. I'd have had a heck of a time getting the older PC versions of the Ultima games without them, and the NES adaptions apparently suck compared to the PC ones (and are the only ones I've played so far - the first I played was Exodus a LOOONG time ago). Really looking forward to that binge (and since it's GOG, really nothing stopping me from downloading them and playing them on this, but I'm kind of making myself wait for the gaming PC to be put together as incentive...)

Date: 2020-10-04 04:20 am (UTC)*laughs* I can relate, especially to "die a lot" and "get lost without a map." I have a terrible sense of direction in real life, and that extends into video games that don't funnel me along prescribed routes. And it generally takes me a while to adapt to how to actually shoot in any given shooter. . . I tend to be in it for the stories and the world as well, though unlike you I do actually enjoy the gameplay. (Sometimes, shooting a bunch of raiders in FO4 can be very cathartic. And it has nice crafting mechanics too.) (And LOL, I see -- hey, you do you. Having a "story" mode for people who just want to play the game as a walking simulator of sorts wouldn't be a bad accessibility option. And could you? I never tried.)
I see -- yeah, that's not where my hoarding tendencies lie. (Now, IN the games, I'll hoard to my heart's content. . .) But hey, I'm glad to hear more desk space = more room for projects and whatnot. Fingers crossed the surveys continue to go decently! And hey, that's a good plan! Might as well, right?
Ugh, I see. I'm glad that you can at least look at the page, but -- I just hope it doesn't give you shit once you get the gaming computer set up!
Yay AI pets! :) I seem to vaguely recall the game existing, but it's not one I ever played. And that's great to hear -- I guess if I want to get anything retro, that's the first place to visit! (And LOL, I see -- yeah, that's probably a good plan. Keeps you focused.)

Date: 2020-10-04 04:48 am (UTC)I have no sense of direction by most standards. I navigate by landmarks, and maps do not have these. On a middle school map test I once put Brazil in Africa because the continents were shaped the same. (It was a map of just the one continent by itself, and I don't think we were told which continent, but I honestly can't recall.) And in video games, especially older ones... well, you see the same sprite over and over so it's hard to find distinctive landmarks to navigate by.
I'd love for there to be a story/explore mode on a lot of games. 7th Guest actually DID have one. I forget if it was unlocked with a code or for beating the game.
Oh, I'm even worse about hoarding in game. I almost always make it to the last boss with 99 (or 255, or whatever is maxed out amount) of useable items like various healing potions or whatever. Stacks of arrows. Weapons my characters haven't used since 1st level but I kept because I got curious about comparing stats or something. It's a habit I want to break for my "official" Final Fantasy 1 playthrough... (well, unless I want to pretend my little Elementals have the same hoarding problem and no explanation for how they're carrying all that stuff. XD I messed up my first attempt at an "official" playthrough for what they did because I found out about a glitch in the game that let you clone items and then my dragonish little hoarding tendancies took over from there and instead I have a playthrough with an attempt to get as many as possible of every item in the game...)
*nods* And while I'm holding the GOG and Epic stuff over my head as incentive, I think I DO want to go ahead with the Final Fantasy playthrough and others, while I'm reorganizing the media section. Seems a good time to play through what I have there already and not be concerned I'll miss something...

Date: 2020-10-05 03:25 am (UTC)I'm a landmark person too, mostly -- it's hard for me to remember street names, and I'm more likely to recognize familiar scenery than a sign. I know the streets that I use to get to and from work, but that's because I drive that route usually five days a week, so. . .and even then, I couldn't tell you ALL of them. Never made the mistake of putting Brazil in Africa, though. XD And oof, yeah, I can relate. Figuring out how to use the Pip-Boy map and the compass at the bottom of the screen was one of the best days in Fallout 4 -- and even then, getting lost is a thing. Boston's a big freaking place!
That would be fun! I mean, I like killing me some raiders, but it would be cool to just be able to wander around and explore if I wanted a more "chill" gaming session. And that's neat! Maybe one day more games will follow its example. . .
*laughs* I see -- yeah, I do that too. I have to actively fight the tendency to grab EVERYTHING in Fallout 4 because then I'll get overencumbered and walk super slow. . .but the game rewards you for taking tons of random junk because it has an awesome crafting system. . .thank somebody for modders who update perks with more carry capacity and make backpacks a thing! XD And I see -- well, they COULD hoard, if you want. XD Though it might make more sense for them to maybe start out hoarding, and then realize they CAN'T carry all the things. . . And LOL, whoops -- though I'd probably get distracted the same way. I've turned my current FO4 saves into a mod testing playground -- gonna restart my own "official" playthrough in a couple of weeks once I've sorted out everything to my satisfaction.
Sounds like a plan! Gives you something to do -- and yeah, exactly. Keeps you on track! Hope the reorganization is going well!

Date: 2020-10-06 02:57 am (UTC)*nods* That's one of the things I like about newer games, such huge areas to potentially explore. If I don't get utterly lost. And one of the reasons I'd like to someday play Fallout 76 (well, maybe if they had an offline solo mode). I live in WV. I'd LOVE to go to Camden Park again, even if it's a post-apocalyptic computer rendition of.
Eh, the game was from the 90's or thereabouts, so if they're ever going to learn anything from it they're being really slow in doing so.
I was used to console RPGs that pretty much gave you a carry limit in numbers, not in weight... then I started playing Ultima Online (I no longer have my account thanks to the EO, and I even had a HOUSE, damn it! - but I have tried my hand at making my own offline server for when I really miss mining). I would get over-encumbered SO MUCH on that game I had to buy a pack horse. It didn't help that one of my favorite things to do was mining, because I just loved the sound effects. They were kind of bubble-wrap-soothing, if you know what I mean?
I'm going to try to remember that, from inside the story, they would have more of a sense of urgency and keep moving on to the next task, instead of knowing the game's going to wait for them to get there.
That said, I have to restart my second attempt at a playthrough because when I set it up and showed up outside Cornelia (I recorded this, but probably won't upload it as part of the letsplay if I upload the letsplay)... well, they had 999,999 GP. I had NO clue how that happened and thought I'd found a bug. Turns out cheat codes got turned on somehow even tho I wasn't using them last time. Odd.
But yeah. I have plenty of things to do (especially when she has no internet to distract her), but I need something in all that that I can use as incentive to get out of bed in the morning instead of something that makes me want to burrow back under the covers and wish the world would go away and leave me alone.
So far, so good. Got a lot more files to sort than I thought, most of which need renamed to some sort of standard. But the basic system I worked out is sound so far.

Date: 2020-10-08 03:09 am (UTC)*snork* Yeah, the "getting lost" thing has plagued me quite a bit in the past -- I'm too easily turned around! And is that so? That's pretty cool! I'm in RI, so Fallout 4's Massachusetts Commonwealth is relatively close to home for me. :P I think the best you can do for a solo experience in 76 right now is a private server, though, and I'm not even sure on that. I've heard a lot of complaints to the effect of "this game would actually be decent if it was single player offline," honestly. Bethesda apparently missed a trick by insisting it be multiplayer.
The games industry for you -- they come up with a good idea, throw it into like three games, and then abandon it for no good reason.
I see -- yeah, it sounds like a rough learning curve from one game style to the other! In my case, I was used to games that either only let you pick up stuff like ammo and health anyway (like the BioShocks), or had relatively unlimited inventory (Sims). The first time I got over-encumbered, I was like, "excuse??" (And ugh, well, that's just par for the course with her, isn't it? I hope one day you can get the offline server working. . . And yeah, I do. I like crafting in Fallout 4. Wouldn't call the sound effects of making a new gun or armor mod, or a new settlement object, soothing, but they are pretty satisfying.)
*nods* Yeah -- to them, it's a ticking clock, not a leisurely stroll to the next set piece. XD
Whooops! That is weird. . .welp, no "super-rich" run for them. I'm sure they're very disappointed. :p
I hear you on that. This whole year has been -- well, I don't think there's enough expletives in the English language. I have a lot keeping me busy too, but stuff like Fallout 4 and related videos is doing a lot to keep me genuinely going.
Well that's good! I'm glad the system is working out, even if the size of the project is bigger than expected. But you have a solid base, so that's gotta help.

Date: 2020-10-09 02:18 am (UTC)Already got lost a few times on the boat on the Final Fantasy playthrough (with the "No one gave them a map" excuse), and I know the basics of that map pretty well.
Yeah, I was reading up on that game and was like "Oh, I've been there! Only roller coaster I've ever been on, and just reinforced my liking for Ski-ball." I think it was a grade school field trip, because I distinctly remember one of the girls I went to grade school with being on said ride.
I've had an offline server a couple times with RunUO. I just don't have one currently as after the laptop started being fussy with server-stuff and I built the server computer I haven't put a version on it yet. Still deciding if I'd do it that way or put the server on the gaming computer. If it's on the server computer, I might be able to play two accounts at the same time (one on laptop and one on the gaming PC) which would make for interesting being able to swap stuff around between charas. But it would also mean having to set it up in Linux, and I haven't had time to look into the new software for it since RunUO is kind of defunct now.
Yeah. This is making for an odd playthrough, really, because I'm doing all this stream-of-consciousness chattering to myself, possible dialogue snippets and random things that pop to mind, so I probably look a few levels of "that old hobo talking to themselves" crazy doing it. And the poor dears are UTTERLY lost, and not just on the boat. I never really realized how vague some of the NPC comments were if you don't already know the story. They're confused on many things now. Everyone is sure they're these "Light Warriors" because they just showed up with crystals (and clothes, three knives, a staff, and about 500gp), and no memory of what they're doing there or how they got just outside the town. (I think one of the comments was "How do they know we didn't just get outrageously drunk after visiting a New Age store?" The prophesy's actual wording is a depressing guilt-trip, but even with all the people begging they restore the crystals, said NPCs aren't being much help about it. You'd think they'd mean the ones carried, but someone said something about one of the crystals actually being in some other part of the world. Right now they're ina tangle of too many plot hooks and too little information - Matoya's crystal eye was stolen but no one can give them a lead on that. The elf prince has been under a sleep spell for five years, and they're guessing maybe Matoya can make a potion for that (while wondering why, in five years, no one seems to have tried that option), but not without the eye. Some fights with the local wildlife have gotten nasty, and they're always broke. I last left them outside Alfheim with the idea that "We're going to have to check out that haunted house the one person mentioned and hope it's the Western Keep the dancer mentioned (and how the hell does she seem to know more about what's going on that we do?), because at this point it's the only thing we HAVEN'T checked out. And we're not going there without at least one Phoenix Down because we've had to use one already..." And I'm also trying to think of a viable excuse for why all the things they fight drop money, but none of the sensible ones (local bounties on animals, you're actually selling/trading that wolf's pelt at some point offscreen) have really set right yet.
Pretty sure I imagined some disappointed "Aww..."s
Yeah. At this point I just figure that as long as "coughing'/coffin" is something you're doing instead of something you're in, you're winning at 2020... or as close as possible.
Now if I could just stop getting distracted by stuff I want to read/re-read before I put it away.

Date: 2020-10-10 03:35 am (UTC)Whooops. Well, if they don't have a map, it does at least make sense for them to get lost. :p
Heh, I see -- it is cool to see places you know in games, isn't it? (And I like skee-ball too.) Never went to a theme park on a school trip that I remember -- though I recall a trip to New York on a bus once. I think we visited a museum on Ellis Island and such.
Ahhh, I see. Yeah, that makes sense -- don't want the laptop complaining and ruining things. And hmmmm. . .having two accounts to be able to swap between and get to interact with each other does sound kinda cool. . .but is figuring out the Linux worth. . .well, I"m sure you'll figure it out one way or the other. Eventually. If there is ever a free moment in your life.
*laughs* I talk to myself all the time when I game -- sort of the same deal, honestly. Either that or just reacting to stuff on screen and giving characters nicknames (I call Preston Garvey in Fallout 4 "Presto" just for laughs). Or bitching about difficulty levels, because I tend to take it kind of personally when I can't kill something. :p But man, it sounds like they're having a time of it! Yeah, I've noticed some games' dialogue can actually be pretty vague and confusing if you don't already know what's "supposed" to be happening and how things should be coming out. (There are reasons that, when I partially novelized Alice: Madness Returns for a fanfic, I ended up editing a bunch of the dialogue!) The poor kiddos. . .they're just doing their best, and they can't seem to catch a break. *pats them*And I'm not sure how to help you with the money drops -- in Fallout 4, what you get off of animals is meat, hide, teeth, claws, and occasional junk that it's implied the animal ate. (And occasionally a missile launcher or something, but that's from Legendary enemies, so the normal rules don't apply there.)
LOL -- ah well. Another timeline!
Basically. . .one day at a time. That's all you can do.
*nods* I hear you. Good luck with that!

Date: 2020-10-10 04:05 am (UTC)It's even semi-canon as I'm playing the 20th anniversary version for the better graphics and extra dungeons... and I've never figured out how to activate the map on it or even if there still is one.
I only remember a couple field trips (my grade school was really small). That, and COSI (Columbus Ohio Science Institute). And one time we had a sleepover at a couple of teachers' houses. (They were brother and sister, and really into football but supported seperate teams, and they lived near enough each other I think that it was basically a thing to watch a WVU/Marshall game and anyone not interested in sports (like me) still got to have ice cream sundaes and camp out in the back yard in a tent, or at least that's what the girls did.
Yeah, it's not the highest thing on priorities right now.
At this point, I'm kind of just having them go with it. "Hey, guys... why does a spider have money? Not that I'm complaning, but... they don't even swallow their prey whole like the snakes..."
Yeah, I saved the startup to a different save file as maybe a reward.
Yep, especially when being sick is added to the mix.

Date: 2020-10-11 03:16 am (UTC)*snork* Oh dear. . .I would HOPE there is one! Otherwise anyone who picked it up who wasn't already a fan is going to spend most of their playtime wondering where the hell they are.
Aww, that sounds like fun. The New York trip is really the only field trip I remember, and that because a) we went such a long way, b) the X-Files movie was playing on the in-bus TVs and creeped me out, and c) I'm pretty sure the door to the bathroom in the back flew open briefly when I was trying to use the facilities, which was embarrassing. Ugh -- I'd rather have ice cream sundaes!
Yeah, I can imagine. Definitely a "someday" project.
*snork* That's all you CAN do in some cases. Lampshade, then move on.
Awww, nice. :) Something to look forward to!
Yeah, I just caught up with your latest entries. That really sucks -- I hope you feel better soon!

Date: 2020-10-13 05:20 am (UTC)There's a Video Game Atlas site I visit that has all kinds of video game maps, and I saw a rip of the in-game map there. So it exists somehow... they just swapped out the old way to get it for a dash function I never use, and nothing in the game reveals how to get the map now.
Yeah. After all, they don't know it yet, but this IS an unstable Unresolved Bubble Of Spacetime, so it's bound to have some wierd things going on! It's still funny to play the game while muttering random dialogue snippets that pop into my mind to myself and sometimes different sides to conversation bits, with no real idea which line is whose in most cases yet. Just going with the flow and saying whatever crosses my brain for notes. One of those instances when having an erratic temperature might actually be helping.
"Better" for a certain definition of it today. Instead of multiple symptoms I seem to be getting a random game of symptom roulette. Hoping to maybe get a round of game in this evening... and try having them make a to-do list. XD
no subject
Date: 2020-10-15 03:04 am (UTC)I see, hmmmm. Well, that's pretty annoying, but at least you have a place to visit where you can see it? And maybe you'll stumble upon how to access it.
LOL -- when it doubt, blamed the Unresolved Bubble of Spacetime Effect! XD And I bet it is XD I do that a bit while I'm playing, though it's more in the sense of "okay make a note of this for later expansion" and suchlike. But oftentimes, after the fact, I'll start getting into real scenes based on bits I've played and things I would like to see, and trying to work them out in my head while pacing around the room. I can be very animated when I'm getting into a scene I like! (I have genuinely once basically flung myself into a wall and jammed a finger doing this.)
Well, that's -- something? I guess? As long as you're well enough to be upright and play, I guess that's improvement.

Date: 2020-10-16 03:48 am (UTC)I know the world map fairly well for FF1 after all these years. And finding a copy is easy enough. But if nothing actually IN the game says how to find one, well... they don't have one (unless they're scribbling one themselves as they go).
Yeah, so behind on so many things. Hoping to get through at least part of the Earth Cave tonight. :)

Date: 2020-10-17 03:31 am (UTC)Well, that's good, at least. And yeah, that's fair, given how you're trying to play. If I were them, I'd be at least ATTEMPTING to make some sort of map. . .but I'm kind of terrible at directions and whatnot, so I don't know how good it would be.
"Behind on many things" is the 2020 mood. Hope the playthrough continues to go well!

Date: 2020-10-19 05:01 pm (UTC)They've gotten to the volcano, but not in it yet. Muttered concerns and WTF about convection all the way... And I'm learning I have to pay closer attention to this playthrough because of not doing all the level grinding I tend to. They still seem on the upper edge of the curve there tho, from all the getting lost.

Date: 2020-10-20 03:15 am (UTC)Heh, I've no doubt. . .you just gotta go with the flow, kids. Except when that flow is lava. :p And I see -- well, I'm glad the "getting lost" is paying off at least a little. Levels are important!

Date: 2020-10-24 01:18 am (UTC)Ice cavern went well. Their insistence on sticking their noses inside Earthgift about 20 levels and a class change before most try it... not so well. They ended up with a rather nasty scare. Luckily a TPK inside the bonus dungeons isn't handled as a game-over, you just get booted out of the dungeon.
no subject
Date: 2020-10-24 04:10 am (UTC)Ooof -- I'm glad that the TPK didn't lead to a game over, at least! Poor things, though -- sounds like they had a bad time!
no subject
Date: 2020-10-24 06:13 am (UTC)They definitely did. But it makes sure they'll avoid the bonus dungeons until they're a little more ready. And they didn't have any big problems until they got to a boss... who wiped them out in two lousy turns.
They had a better (and funnier) round of videos today. Got them through Class Change, finally... and found out that absolutely NO ONE in the game tells you where to find Bahamut. The closest you get is "Carrying around a rat tail, huh? Better see the Dragon King." or something like that. Nothing on where he was. XD They only managed to find him because they'd been nearly everywhere else! (They also found the entrance to one of the other bonus dungeons, and did a really quick NOPE outta there! Not that I can blame them. Not ready for those until around lvl 40-45, and they tried it around 21...)
Due to detours while looking for dragons they have most of the prep for the Sunken Shrine done, and just need to visit the waterfall to be ready for the Mirage Tower and Floating Fortress. Tomorrow is likely to be a little more shopping for spells and then the waterfall. And then the poor dears have to stuff themselves in an unsafe "submarine" someone made out of a barrel...
no subject
Date: 2020-10-25 04:27 am (UTC)*nods* At least there's that. And I see -- well, it could have been worse, then. At least they made it to a boss!
LOL, oh man. Why does everyone have to be so cryptic in this game? I'm sure they're absolutely sick of it at this point. . .I guess they're getting their exercise roaming the map like this? XD (And heh, I see -- yup, not the time for bonus dungeons! Gotta level up some more first. . .)
That's good! They're making decent progress, it sounds like. Though oof, what is it with them and terrible water conveyance devices. . .
no subject
Date: 2020-10-26 06:47 am (UTC)And, yeah, they've had a lot of getting lost and not knowing what to do next and occasional grumblings about how these people expect them to save the world, but won't even give them a MAP or tell them where to find the Dragon King or anything they'd like to know that could help them do it. It's really giving them an understandable "people get lazy when they think someone else is prophesied to save their asses" perspective. And they may be about to get a string of lost again, as they have no idea how to get into the Mirage tower except that it involves a "chiming sound", and haven't even visited Lufein... yet. They are making pretty decent progress, tho, despite the perpetual mild confusion.
Not sure. They like the airship after they got most of the sand off, but that barrel-submarine? When the game asks if you want to climb in and has yes/no options... well, there was a bit of a pause and a lot of "Want to? The answer would be no (bordering on hell no). Have to, unfortunately, is yes..."
no subject
Date: 2020-10-27 03:26 am (UTC)*laugh* Can't blame them, honestly. You'd think the NPCs would be more helpful, but nooope. It's all Someone Else's Problem. :p And oof, damn. . .I'm glad to hear they're at least still making progress! Seems like that's at a premium in this world.
Well, hey, an airship sounds cool. Barrel-sub? Not so much. . .ah, the lovely power of "But Thou Must. . ."
no subject
Date: 2020-10-27 06:14 pm (UTC)It's sort of like the issues Lonnie complains about sometimes. The people are so well trained that there is someone whose job it is to fix this problem that no one even thinks of trying to do anything about it themselves. (Course, the big problems set in when the people whose job it is to do something about whatever it is don't give a damn unless it directly involves them or lines their pockets - and then you have no one doing ANYTHING because nobody else even knows HOW to step up and do something any more.) But just about every story I've seen with a prophesy has this problem. No one even tries to make it easier on the person or people the prophesy says is meant to solve the problem by giving them extra help or at least taking out some of the enemy's support or anything. Oh well. At least by now the group has quit going "how are they so damned sure we're theses prophesied Light Warriors when we basically woke up on their front lawn with amnesia" and have accepted they might as well be since they're the only ones doing the job, prophesy be damned. (Also a funny moment when one of the mermaids in the Sunken Shrine asks "Who are you?" and the instant reaction was "We've been trying to figure that out from the start of this mess!"
Yeah, one of my least favorite game tropes. And, honestly, that princess from Dragon Warrior creeped me right the fk out with that, and might be why I have not yet played any of the other games in that entire series...
no subject
Date: 2020-10-29 03:36 am (UTC)Yeah, it's kind of a common complaint with prophesies. People just get so used to there being a "chosen one" to solve all the problems, they forget that it would probably be in their best interest to help said "chosen one." And to have some backup plans in place in case something not-fated happens. . . (Or, as you say, the "chosen one" turns out to be a dick.) At least your group is committed to stepping up and being the heroes. . .and LOL, yes. Fated to save the world, and they don't even know who they are. . .
It's annoying as all get out. And is that so? I assume she's got some sort of creepy sprite going on during the moment?

Date: 2020-10-29 06:26 am (UTC)Dragon Warrior was an NES game, so not much variation on spites. She was the trope namer tho. The whole thing is basically her asking your chara if they love her and then going "But thou must!" if you say no, and I think the game won't even let you leave the room (or end the conversation with her) until you say yes. Put her kind of firmly in Creepy Stalker Territory for me long ago... and then, well, in later playthroughs... I found out that, well, It's actually possible to beat the entire game without ever rescuing her from the dragon early on in it. So I never did again.
no subject
Date: 2020-10-30 03:53 am (UTC)Ah -- I see. I didn't know if she had a scary face that popped up in a screen or something. . .but yeah, telling someone that you must love her isn't exactly great behavior, is it? Yeesh. . .and seriously? Nope, I guess thou mustn't, princess! XD

Date: 2020-11-01 01:46 am (UTC)They've finished off Earthgift and off to a round of Hellfire Chasm tonight, if I don't just skip in favor of sleep. I keep having strangely exhausted days.
It seems I also have to iron out a little wrinkle with my early timeline synchronization as Jake was apparently done with the Ultima timeline by the time they were done with Earthgift. He was spotted in Cornelia when they went to stay at the inn. Well, watching for things like that WAS one of the reasons I wanted to get letsplays out of the way.
no subject
Date: 2020-11-01 03:59 am (UTC)Nice -- well, getting to Hellfire Chasm, not you having strangely exhausted days. Hope this isn't a new trend for you. :(
Ah, I see -- yeah, exactly! Having actual experience with the game helps you figure out what needs to be tweaked. :) At least it's just a minor wrinkle.

Date: 2020-11-02 02:51 am (UTC)I'd hope not too, but my health has been not so great all year.
Yeah, and there are only two timelines to juggle in that patch. Much easier than the later sections.

Date: 2020-11-02 03:59 am (UTC)Yeah, so I've seen. :( I'm sorry -- as if you don't have enough to deal with.

Date: 2020-11-02 04:37 am (UTC)Just got done with Hellfire Chasm's second round and have them all set up to wander into Lifespring Grotto tomorrow. They're finding these a lot easier - and I may have found a minor glitch/oversight in the game! On the overworld maps of Hellfire, it's possible to talk to the pirate guy you need to find and speak to without leaving your boat. Ooops. Saved a lot of walking just because he was close to the coast.

Date: 2020-11-03 04:17 am (UTC)Nice. :D I'm glad they're improving! And LOL, is that so? Well, I guess that makes sense -- if he's close enough to the water, they could just shout. XD
no subject
Date: 2020-11-04 12:49 am (UTC)Yep, but still pretty sure that "puzzle" was not meant to be solved that way. XD There was also a non-standard solve on the Lifespring Grotto floor with Gilgamesh, because instead of going from mermaid to mermaid until they found the one who knew where he was, they chanced out talking to a few others they passed and just happened past the right room on their way to the spot the first one had told them to check.

Date: 2020-11-04 04:08 am (UTC)LOL, still, if nothing stopped, then it's legit. And LOL -- they seem to be catching a few breaks here and there now! Maybe the universe is trying to make up for the barrel sub a bit.
