crossover_chick: Doc snoozing on his couch (BTTF: exhausted)
[personal profile] crossover_chick
Yeah, this first full week after my vacation has been a bit rough when it comes to adjusting back to my usual schedule for getting stuff done in the evenings. I feel like I've REALLY been falling behind on stuff, and it sucks. :( At least I still have this week's half-day Friday to try and catch up on a few things, I suppose. . . But yeah, my to-do list isn't looking great today --

Work – Had an utterly MISERABLE ride in thanks to a couple of accidents on the highway, which really held things up. *grumbles* As for work itself, had a slightly-busier day in terms of phone calls – a few more people doing credit card stuff and one person checking a mailing address – but other than that, still pretty quiet, with me focusing on my duplicates. And at least the ride home was quick – though, with kids slowly trickling back to school, I don’t expect that to last past this week. *grumbles again* Just a day and a half to go!

Beanbags – Another nice day, another game out in the yard – and let me tell you, Dad SMOKED Mom and I today. He got all the wins, and Mom and I had to constantly duke it out for second, with me just managing to squeeze past her twice. Final scores were me 2-3-2; Dad W-W-W; and Mom 3-2-3. Bleh – hopefully we can do better tomorrow (if we play – depends on when the predicted rain comes in. Supposed to be late at night into Friday, buuuuut. . .).

To-Do List

1. Get in a workout: Check – another night on the bike, another night with Oxventure Presents Blades In the Dark – “Fate Of The Dimmer Sisters!” Barnaby did indeed manage to get the prisoner “conveyor belt” stopped so Rosie could be put in with Josie in the special glowing trick carriage, but the consequences of that were a brief pile-up of carriages as the goats all ran into each other; another prisoner attempting to make a run for it (Barnaby instantly narced him out, and the Bluecoats gave him a most savage beating); and Darnelle getting QUITE annoyed with Barnaby and lecturing him about how they were behind schedule. Barnaby tried to calm him down with a drink, but Darnelle declared he wasn’t drinking today – an idea that absolutely BAFFLED our favorite horrible rich alcoholic. XD Even worse, he took the bottle from Barnaby and poured it out! That’s an entire third of Barnaby’s load that you’ve wasted on the ground, Darnelle! XD (Seriously, it’s very funny that, after complaining in the balloon race that Barnaby was a walking drinks cabinet, Mike has just completely embraced that and made Barnaby constantly carrying all the alcohol. XD)

Anyway – with Rosie and Josie secured, and the carriages straightened out, the convoy was on its way! They proceeded through the streets, surrounded by a mob of ordinary citizens come to jeer at the prisoners and generally make a nice day out of the horrible murder of two people. :p The convoy eventually came to the spot where Lilith was waiting, soon joined by a number of Spirit Wardens – Lilith made sure to stay at the back of the crowd, where she wouldn’t be spotted. Everything seemed to be proceeding swimmingly for Darnelle –

And then, suddenly, the entire convoy ground to a halt. And when Darnelle asked why, he was informed by his trembly-voiced aide that something was wrong with the wheels on the lead carriage. Darnelle was immediately like “these wheels DO NOT fail” and told Barnaby to keep a close eye out, as he suspected sabotage. The Bluecoats kept themselves busy trying to keep the mob under control while the Spirit Wardens searched the crowd – Lilith rolled a Prowl to keep under the radar, and managed it with a five. BUT, as she slipped behind a family enjoying the spectacle, she saw a Bluecoat run up to Darnelle and show him the damaged remains of the clockwork spear.

The clockwork spear with the “Lumiere” name on it, as Edvard brands all his items and Lilith forgot to scratch that out or take it off. Darnelle said they’d investigate “Lumiere” later, and Barnaby quickly tried to distract him by pointing out that, if this was sabotage, SURELY something would have happened by now? Darnelle agreed, saying that was the first sensible thing Barnaby had said all day, and took Barnaby’s suggestion to start searching the carriages. The Bluecoats began flinging open doors and looking inside each carriage –

And cue Finn appearing by Lilith’s side, having been frightened away by Rosie and Josie (who’d tried chanting something to pull her apart) before she could deliver her message about stamping on the floor to activate the trick door. Lilith gave her a cuddle and reassured her that it was all right, she understood those two could be really scary, and popped her back in a spirit bottle to chill for the time being. However, this did mean that, when the carriage containing Rosie and Josie was opened, they were still sitting in there. They gave Barnaby a quizzical look as he started ranting about how he hated them, how they were probably responsible for this, and how his respect for them had gone through the floor (with appropriate significant hand gestures). There was no indication from the girls that they understood what he was on about, though –

Cue Lilith deciding “Tempest time,” summoning another massive fog, sprinting toward the carriage before they could close it, and opening up the trap door herself to physically drag the girls in there. Barnaby opted to help by shouting about witchcraft, demanding everyone scan the rooftops for collaborators, and Lilith accepted a Devil’s Bargain from Luke where she got another die in return for being trapped in the space with Rosie and Josie, who would creepily whisper to her and touch her snake-hair and suchlike (this was originally going to translate to stress, but then Mike suggested it be “Level 1 Harm – Touched Hair” instead and Luke went with that as funnier XD). This gave her a massive five dice to roll to Finesse this just right –

And one of them was a five, meaning she just BARELY managed it, knee-sliding through a Bluecoat’s legs and flinging herself into the carriage just as the door was closed. But she did it, getting Rosie and Josie inside the false floor and then enduring them being smushed up right against her as they stroked her snakes and told her terrible stories that would haunt her for ages. Barnaby indicated the convoy should go on now, they needed to get these witches burned already, and with the wheel replaced, the convoy did indeed set off again, winding through the streets until it reached Brightstone. They arrived at the burning place with its pyre – overseen by Lord Strangford himself, giving a very pointed speech about how punishments like these were a message to those who would not fall into line with what they should do – and Barnaby checked the clock, confirming it was just after noon.

And then called for a flashback where he talked to his financial advisor and had him SELL ALL OF BARNABY’S SHARES IN TRIPOT SECURITY AT NOON. XD Luke clearly considered this to be hilariously horrific, and had Darnelle’s aide learn the news from the market and come up to tell him just as he was preparing to unlock the special carriage with Barnaby. Darnelle was FURIOUS that Barnaby had “pump and dumped” him (Barnaby claiming that the whole business with the witches had just made him uneasy), and vowed to make Barnaby rue the sale. The aide took the key from Barnaby, and he melted into the crowd as they unlocked the carriage –

To find it empty. And then, just to twist the knife, Barnaby got the crowd all chanting “JUSTICE!” before he fled. XD Darnelle staggered off, a broken man in the face of this ruin of his company, and the carriage was eventually brought back to the warehouse, where Barnaby was able to quietly collect Lilith and the sisters without anyone suspecting a thing (because, obviously, the witches had fled in the mysterious fog earlier). Luke was so impressed with their clever plans that he didn’t even make them roll for any of the exfil, AND declared that Barnaby’s pump-and-dump had in fact solved the gang’s money problems, at least slightly – Barnaby earned five Coin from the sale, paid two to Cart-On-The-Road, and kept – well, HOPEFULLY just one for himself, as part of his finder’s fee. XD But yes, the gang theoretically has two Coin back in its coffers, hooray. :p Barnaby and Lilith delivered Rosie and Josie back to Keleanor’s safehouse, where she gave them a hug and sent them on their way, and – after another toffee and a “green smoothie” from Lilith (which she revealed was just drainwater; she THOUGHT if she gave it to Barnaby he’d throw up all the alcohol he’d drunk, but apparently instead all the booze in his system had sterilized it. Kelly chose to mix it with her weird spirit stuff, declaring that it gave it a HELL of a kick) – she gave the two Hobbyhorses more details on how she’d come to work with the Brighteners – they were mostly old money sorts, only bringing her on to help improve the Barricade and the gathering of ghost energy for ossilatronic devices – and what the Barricade even WAS – a big machine, much like the lightning barriers around the city, built over a natural rock passage in the mountains that served as a road to the afterlife. Normally, ghosts go in, and Magic (capital M and everything) comes out, but the Barricade disrupts that, and was in fact responsible for the ghost calamity that came upon the world in the past (the Brighteners have been faking that THAT was a natural disaster). Its whole purpose is to keep G’eth haunted so the ghosts can be harvested for their spectral energy and used in technology. All of this was interspersed with numerous rants about how the group were cowards for just maintaining the Barricade and not seeing what it could really do and piercing the veil and truths beautiful and horrifying and all that nonsense. XD

Aaaand – because I couldn’t resist, I ended up watching the last ten minutes of the episode (had to refresh my memory on whether the discovery of Edvard’s spear happened before or after Finn appeared to Lilith anyway) after supper! After complaining mightily that the Brighteners weren’t using the Barricade to its full potential and how she’d THOUGHT she was joining a group of like-minded researchers when she accepted their invitation, Keleanor admitted that she actually rather missed her sister, even if she was a coward who believed in the natural order of things. Barnaby suggested that maybe they could get drinks or breakfast together now that she’d rejected the Brighteners, and Kelly seemed to be considering it –

Cue a gang of six Red Sashes, a foreign, ruthless mercenary group (and the victims of Barnaby and Kasimir’s previous balloon rampage) bursting into the room with swords drawn. Kelly attempted to do a “redemption equals death” moment by shielding the two Hobbyhorses, but Lilith decided to try and be awesome instead. Her FIRST attempt, using a ritual to pierce the veil and unleash a basilisk on the Sashes (like she saw back in the train yard when she and Kasimir were doing that job for the Gut-Cutters), unfortunately fizzled due to a bad dice roll (Kelly commended her for trying, though). Thinking quickly, she called for a flashback to convince Cart-On-The-Road to sneak into Kelly’s safehouse and make a secret passage escape route for her and Barnaby should she need it – Luke insisted she take two stress and roll for it, and she rolled her single die in Sway –

And got a six! XD Lilith stamped on the hidden pressure plate, and the floor opened up underneath the startled Red Sashes, sending them plummeting into what they THOUGHT was the abyss, but proved to be a chute that landed them in a passing manure cart. XD (Barnaby looked at his coat and remarked it was a lucky escape. XD) One managed to use his sword to slow his fall just enough to ask Lilith the time before his “death,” however – and when she told him it was 7 PM, he informed her that her friends were already dead before releasing his sword and falling into the darkness. Kelly confirmed that, if this was an attack from the Brighteners, they DEFINITELY would have gone after the other Hobbyhorses too – and there was a good chance that Lilith and Barnaby were the only ones left.

Barnaby: “Well, good thing one of them is me!” XD We ended the episode with Lilith racing into the street, spirit bottles at the ready to try and save the ghosts of her friends from Spirit Warden mulching, and Barnaby casually strolling after her with no real plan at all save maybe finding a nice drinking establishment. :p Next week, we turn back time to see what Kasimir, Zillah, and Edvard were doing during all of this, and if any of them are indeed dead, with “Foundry No. 12!”

2. Continue writing Valicer In The Dark, “Home Sweet Lair”: No check, to my own annoyance – I just ran out of juice tonight. *sigh* I suppose it’s better to run out of juice on the random snippets from this verse instead of on “Londerland Bloodlines,” but still. Hoping to do better tomorrow!

3. Keep up with YouTube Subs: One-third check again, with me catching up on yesterday’s Josh Way as the shortest video in my Subs after the above write-up of “Fate Of The Dimmer Sisters” ran long – “SKETCHY: Toad(s)!” Featuring Josh drawing Mr. Toad from the Wind In The Willows half of that anthology featuring him and Disney’s first animated take on The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow (inspired by Twitter discourse on what Mr. Toad’s actual pant color is – the consensus being that, if you see him in red pants, he’s actually in his underwear XD), and then Josh drawing a Toad mushroom guy from the Mario Bros series pointing at Mr. Toad (because Josh had the thought after finishing the Mr. Toad drawing that this would be funny and couldn’t resist bringing it to life). XD Fun little video, as always – though I THINK his audio might have gotten desynced from the action at one point. Not actually sure, though. O.o

4. Get my tumblr queues sorted: Check – as it was Wednesday, I only had Victor Luvs Alice to worry about, and I kept it very simple – Alice: Madness Returns photoset on Thursday, Corpse Bride gifset on Friday, and a reblog of my old Song Saturday featuring the Michael and Janet Jackson song “Scream” for, well, Saturday (because you’ve probably noticed by this point I’ve been rather grumpy this week). Though I also ended up grabbing some posts I wanted to reblog from my dash and sticking them in my drafts for later, along with the start of a reply to Satirical Demon’s reply to my reply to his ask about the Haunted Mansion Valicer stuff. XD I just didn’t want to lose any of it, and – yeah. At least I was productive somewhere other than the workout write-up!

Yeah, not great, but at least I'm a little ahead of the game in potential tumblr posts. And have finished up another excellent episode of Oxventure Presents Blades In The Dark. :) Tomorrow, back to Londerland Bloodlines for writing, and James Turner for working out (gotta go back to Addison's Dine Out Reloaded adventures), and HOPEFULLY get some messages answered! But for now, bed. Night all!
