Sooooo -- Today Happened
Jan. 6th, 2021 11:06 pmI mean, for me, the day was reasonably quiet (mostly doing reversals and catching up on stuff sent back from our processors), but -- yeah. Shit went DOWN in DC. I'm still not entirely up on all the details (I only heard about it at the end of my shift at work, and there was only so much of the news I could take in one sitting), but -- yeah. I can tell it was bad, and the next two weeks are gonna be -- interesting. In all the worst ways. Ugh. . .
Let's not think about that for a little bit, okay? Instead, I'll take you through the standard weekday evening to-do list:
1. Get in a workout: Check – managed to drag myself away from the coverage for a bike ride and another chunk of Jon’s Fallout 4 Survival Playthrough! Grills finished exploring the prisons and labs and whatnot for the robobrains (with Jon praising it for some of the creepiest storytelling in the game – I really have to watch his “No Guns” run at some point, he keeps saying he goes into more detail with these quests with that character), finding some enemies and gear but no bed. So it was into the final room with no save point –
And Grills and Codsworth nailed it. Jon was fully expecting this to take multiple attempts, but – despite a few close calls (mostly from things exploding, though a few of the robots could take a hit) – the dynamic duo made it through the waves of bots and confronted the Mechanist! I was half-certain that Grills was going to be the sort to kill her (yes, her – the twist is that the Mechanist is a young female mechanic who knows robots and was trying to get them to HELP the Commonwealth; she’s genuinely HORRIFIED when she’s told that the robobrains happily twisted their prime directive to kill people), but nope – he was content with getting her to stand down, yay. He took control of the facility, explored a secret area that apparently Jon had missed when he first did the quest, and then headed home.
And then took a quick jaunt to the Institute to steal as much aluminum stuff as he possibly can because he needed it to repair his power armor. XD With that sorted, he also upgraded the unyielding metal arm he got off a legendary bot during the wave (+3 to all stats at low health; Jon’s hoping it’ll stack with his chest piece which has the same effect), talked to Ada to end the quest, put Codsworth back on “hanging around Hangman’s Alley” duty (still in “Most Dangerous Robot” mode, mind XD), added some new suits to his collection. . .and I left him going to take care of the first “Rogue Robot” quest, which had spawned just outside his house. XD Never deny the power of Chaos Junction, as Jon calls it.
2. Keep up with YouTube subscriptions: Check! Today’s offerings:
A) Call Me Kevin plays The Sims 2: Life Stories! This was a subset of The Sims 2 that actually had a story mode where you played a specific character through a specific plot (tracked via your Wants panel with a special “goal” want) – if I remember correctly, these were intended for laptop users. Kevin’s got his on a virtual machine (after HOURS of work, apparently), and he’s playing the story of Riley, who had lost her job and moved in with her aunt in Four Corners. Said aunt promptly ditched her (first for work, then to help out a mysterious old friend), so Kevin decided to spend his time doing what he loves best – making Sims look weird and destroying their lives! Riley now lives in a coconut bra and grass skirt with full-face rainbow star makeup, meaning her potential love interest Mickey has absolutely NO chemistry with her. XD The plot won’t actually let them hate each other, though, so Kevin resorted to other measures to screw with the game – namely, multiple cooking fires! XD Hell, he left the first one running after inviting over Mickey and then immediately leaving for the gym. After all, it was still there when he got back. :p Most of the house has burned down now, and he managed to kill Riley once by accident (with the game shooting him a sarcastic comment before reloading from the last save). Poor Riley lives among the ashes, eating bathroom pizza. And yet one could argue she has one of the better lives among Kevin’s Sims. XD I hope he does more – this is a lot of fun!
B) Speaking of which, GrayStillPlays, er, plays more Turbo Dismount! (Or Happy Wheels, as he said in his closer. Poor Gray, he’s starting to forget the difference between all these impossible boards. XD) Today was mostly “horrible falling challenges,” starting with a pit of lightspeed bulldozers and wind turbines, and ending with a pit of constantly pulsing snowplows. Fun for the whole family! Gray managed to get through both without getting totally destroyed, but it really took some doing! Also taking some doing – getting through a ring of vehicles, with a vertical train in the middle (harder than it looks!), and around three loop-de-loops before flying through four lanes of Frogger-style traffic (also harder than it looks, though Gray managed it with one of the lighter cars). It’s amazing, the bullshit he’ll put himself through to make us laugh. XD
3. Write on “In A World Of His Own”: Check! Talk moved from what they would paint on each other if they could, to Alice musing over a contradiction in Victor’s life – he’s fond of color, but mainly does black-and-white ink drawings. Victor admits this is weird but says he just likes a nice crisp ink line. Also the bit where Alice wonders why The Artist looks like a pencil drawing of Victor, only for him to nudge her into remembering what her preferred drawing implement is, has happened and it is cute. :D Needed that today!
I also helped out a bit more with the puzzle, as I always do, and I got a couple days' worth of queue done on Victor Luvs Alice! One meme for the "Fallout of Darkness" verse that I've been sitting on, and one reblog that really, REALLY sums up the writer life very well. So that's good, at least.
Okay, time to answer my DW comment, go to bed, and brace myself for whatever might happen in the morning. Hopefully the world won't have gone completely to hell on Thursday. . .night all.
