A Night Where I Can Breathe
Nov. 4th, 2011 11:54 pmAll caught up on LJ, tumblr, and twitter. How amazing is that? I've actually got some quiet time.
Not that I'm spending it productively, I'm just saying. XD
And the most pathetic thing is, I can't think of any decently-sized journal entry! I mean, we're doing the French Revolution in History, learning about preschoolers in Developmental Psych, and I'm drawing a hat and gloves for my art project this weekend. Also get to spend part of my Sunday in a museum with the art teacher talking about art. *sigh* At least next weekend is a three-dayer. Also, I may be able to use a free cookie coupon I got from Subway while up there.
You know, I haven't posted a 25 Foods in a while. Before we get into the last grouping of Backie Days, let's have one:
19. Lime(s)
“Alice?”
“Yes?”
“Could you come see this a moment?”
Alice turned away from her investigation into an interesting-looking crevice in the rocks and climbed down toward her husband. They and the rest of the family were spending some time in the Vale of Tears, having a picnic and just generally enjoying themselves. Right at this moment, however, Victor looked rather puzzled. He was also holding something green and oval-shaped. “What is it?” she said, reaching the ground and coming toward him.
In response, he held out the green thing. “Is this from you?”
Alice looked. What Victor was holding was – was a little lime. With arms and legs. Dressed in a sailor suit. She stared at it for a moment. “What the – where did you find that?”
“I’m guessing that’s a no, then,” Victor said. “There’s a whole little community of them on the far shore. They’re building boats.”
The lime creature, apparently thinking some action was required of it, chose that moment to wave. Alice waved back, still a little startled. “Well – ah – they’re rather cute, but I certainly haven’t been thinking of seafaring limes anytime recently.”
“Neither have I. So where did he--”
“Mummy? Daddy? Have you seen – oh, you’ve met the Limeys!”
Victor and Alice looked down at Lorina. “The what?” Victor repeated.
“The Limeys,” Lorina repeated dutifully. “They’re sailors. At least, that’s what the lady told me.”
Alice couldn’t hold in all her snickers, though she tried mightily. “The new nickname for the British Navy men,” she murmured in sudden understanding. “Were you thinking of them just now?”
“Yeah! And that’s when I discov – dis. . . .” Lorina’s eyes grew round. “D-did I – m-make them?”
“Wonderland is a dream world that thrives on nonsense,” Alice replied. “And you’re related to me by blood, which can’t hurt matters.”
Victor gently handed her the little Limey. “Well, nobody objects to a new bit of nonsense, I’m sure,” he told her. “But do be careful with them, all right? And let your brothers and sister play with them if they like.”
“Okay Daddy.” She carried the Limey back to its fellows, still looking awed.
Alice watched her go with a small smile. “So that does it,” she said. “Wonderland is officially no longer just mine.”
Victor nodded, then drew her close. “Do you really mind all that much?”
Alice leaned her head on his shoulder. “After all I’ve gained – no, not at all.”
-TTV: *amused grin* Oh, this is sweet.-
Yeah, sometimes I just like writing the fluff.
-M: Yeah, but -- did I see "brothers?" Plural?-
You did -- this is a Travelers Verse fic, so Victor and Alice have FOUR kids here -- Chester, Lucy, Vincent & Lorina. I know I mentioned this over on my tumblr, but I dunno if it came up here: when designing the Travelers Verse, I found I'd grown quite fond of the twins Vincent & Lorina, but I also wanted to include Lucy from the Solicitor's Ward Verse. So, bam, combined them, and four kids.
-D: Oh dear. I hope they're not too overwhelmed.-
LoL, no, they can generally keep up with the little ones, though as you can see there's occasional reality warping in Wonderland. I knew I had to do something with the British navy men being nicknamed "limeys" for this prompt, but I discovered that the nickname came along a bit later than I thought -- the story was originally set back when Victor and Alice were newlyweds. Fortunately I came up with the idea of one of Alice's kids making up seafaring limes, and things just went from there.
-HD: It is appropriately Wonderlandish.-
I thought so. I mean, if you can have Origami Ants and Cannon Crabs, you can certainly have Sailor Limeys. Just limited by your imagination.
-VD2: So, Wonderland is a real place here?-
In a sense -- it exists inside Alice's head, and you've got to have the special Traveler talent to get inside, but it is someplace others can visit. The family often goes on nighttime trips to the various realms.
-VM: Just fall asleep and you're there?-
Yup. Better than the alternative, which is letting the body run around on autopilot and possibly look completely mental. Alice has way too much experience with that one.
-VM: Good point.-
Indeed.
All righty, I really ought to write something tonight. Apparently if I'm not doing NaNo November is a low-productivity month. Hopefully I can pick up the pace once the Backie goodness starts.
