Another Late Night
Aug. 24th, 2022 11:49 pmThought I might be able to squeeze more in tonight, but between having to stop for gas on the ride home, playing beanbags, and the usual juggle of the to-do list, my writing, and fighting off distractions -- yeah. Maybe tomorrow will be a little better on that front. At least I completed my standard to-do list:
Work – Meh – another reasonably quiet day, but my lunch break was interrupted first by someone asking for help with updating their credit card, then by helping to stuff envelopes for the latest mailing we’re doing, so that was rather annoying. Other than that, though, finally got in contact with someone I’ve been playing phone tag with to do an update; cleared up some obituaries; and looked at more expired cards. *shrug* Could have gone worse for a Wednesday!
Beanbags – Yes – hot outside, but not too muggy to be completely oppressive, so we headed out and played a few rounds! And it was a nice, equitable day too for the most part – I got W-3-2; Dad got 2-2-W; and Mom got 3-W-3. Everybody won once, yay~ We’ll see if there’s a repeat performance tomorrow!
To-Do List –
1. Get in a workout: Check – another night on the bike, another night with the Oxventure “Sail Of The Century!” Having discovered that the Inevitability was sending four druid-powered “speedboats” after them with fresh, not-actually-friends-of-the-Oxventurers boarding parties, the gang had one aim – increase their lead! Dob’s thought was to dump all the cannons and Corazon’s bed and whatnot to make the ship lighter, but Corazon – very much not wanting all of his stuff, including the expensive guns, to get thrown overboard – said that he had a different plan –
And pulled out the super-strength bracers they picked up from the museum adventure that Luke ran! While they were certainly useful then, Corazon has been reluctant to use them since because he was worried about them being cursed. However, desperate times called for desperate measures, and he figured he could strap them to his legs and basically push the boat along with super strength and the resultant incredible speed. And luckily, as it turned out, the bracers were not cursed, just annoying. XD Johnny basically decided to make the spell on them act like a semi-intelligent AI FitBit, registering Corazon as a new user and informing him that he had 75% charge left. Also had auto-laces, like a certain pair of Nikes from a certain movie sequel. XD Anyway, Corazon strapped those on, dove perfectly into the water, then started kicking and pushing, providing them a truly giant boost of speed and getting quite a distance between them and their pursuers!
Dob decided this was the perfect time to ransack Corazon’s captain’s quarters and put a cannon in there so they could fire upon any pursuit that actually got close enough. XD Prudence and Egbert were naturally all for this, while Corazon tried to call for a Blades in the Dark flashback to set up a trap to stop them. XD Johnny in fact made Corazon describe his own captain’s quarters and their vast luxury before allowing the others to wreck the room – upending his desk, throwing out his wardrobe, and kicking out his window (making Corazon wonder what the hell was up with all that broken glass). The group DID get the cannon successfully in and mounted in such a way that they could fire it multiple times (basically they kept it on the wheely base so it could move a bit), though thanks to a middling roll Dob ended up tweaking his back and spent some time prone. Corazon kept kicking until the bracers informed him that he was at 25% power, then climbed back on the Joyful Damnation, removed them (though not before they’d given him the shipping forecast, and tested his blood pressure (okay) and his cholesterol (could actually stand to have a little MORE in his body)), then went looking for the others – and, of course, found them in his quarters with a massive cannon, and Rust sleeping on the contents of his wardrobe.
Cue Corazon stalking off in a huff to his spare captain’s quarters to change out of his wet clothes. XD Everyone agreed this was entirely in-character, with Prudence even complaining that multiple captain’s quarters was the whole reason they had no room on this ship. XD
Anyway, once Corazon was decent again, a decision had to be made – was the gang going to go into the coral reef in the hopes of taking advantage of their good maneuverability to leave the Inevitability behind? Or were they going to try a different route? Dob was like “we probably should consider scuttling the Inevitability,” but everyone was more or less in agreement that they’d spend this long planning on going into the reef, they should follow through – forcing the Inevitability to go around would help them lose it all the faster, hopefully! Egbert got Rust’s help in carrying the mines back to the stern (after telling him that NO, you do NOT push in those pins on the side!), and Dob and Prudence climbed into the rigging to provide directions to Corazon at the wheel (and to trim the sails, at Johnny’s reminder, so they didn’t barrel into the reef at 20 knots). Corazon, using Mage Hand for extra invisible grip, expertly took the first few turns into the reef, and Egbert and Rust dropped the mines over the side for the little speedboats to run into. The first pair approached –
BANG! One miss, thanks to a decent Dex saving throw, and one hit! The unlucky boat basically turned into a fountain of planking and corpses. XD That still left the other boat, though –
And Dob went “I AM GOING OVERBOARD TODAY NO MATTER WHAT,” allowed Corazon to tie a rope to him, then dove overboard to find some coral to stand on and Thunderwave the other boat in an attempt to knock it over. Johnny, thinking this plan was amazing, more than allowed it – but then the question of how much the Thunderwave hurt DOB came up. Because, strictly according to the rules, Thunderwave is literally just a very violent wave of thunder – but it’s been established in Oxventure at this point that Dob’s version, at least, has LIGHTNING as well. And the dude WAS standing in salt water. . .yeaaaah, Dob ended up frying himself for ten damage, BUT he got the boat and its occupants as well, leaving them stunned in the water. So not a total loss! Even if he smelled like fried courgettes afterward. XD
But that still left two other boats coming in as they continued navigating the reef – one rolled a two, and just BARRELED into the remaining mine, turning into essentially a cloud of red mist and bits of splintered wood. But the other?
NAT 20. So they’re STILL very much on the Joyful Damnation’s tail! Fortunately said tail now has a cannon sticking out of it. . .we’ll see how this wraps up tomorrow!
2. Continue writing “Londerland Bloodlines: Downtown Queensland”: Check – Alice has gotten through her incarceration in Rutledge Asylum after the fire, with Victor having his usual “who the hell commits a CHILD” moment (which, Alice DOES at least appreciate the sentiment!) and to the start of the original American McGee’s Alice, with being called to Wonderland. She’s also verbally responded to one of her hallucinations for the first time in front of Victor, so the next writing session will contain a small detour as she explains, “Oh yeah, I see characters from Wonderland around me all the time now and I can’t switch them off.” Joy. XD At least I’m used to writing this kind of exposition now?
3. Keep up with YouTube Subs: Check, with a very easy one upload today – GrayStillPlays and “Upgrading to the world's biggest player in GTA 5!” Alex has found a new student to tutor, Nick (as Danny is busy with homework at the moment), and together they made Gray a new course of pain in GTA V – a board where, after each checkpoint, everything gets bigger! Trees, scenery, props, this one NPC guy’s special TV head, everything. Gray started with a go-kart and a bunch of tight-rope-related parkour (such as getting over a tightrope, then over a line of bushes without falling over, then over ANOTHER couple of tightropes, then finally over a big jump); then upgraded to a motorcycle and his choice of a “skill” or “luck” course (after trying “luck” and finding it had a bunch of fake platforms, Gray instead went with skill and navigated his way over the spinning upside-down planters, across one tightrope to fall down onto another, SLIGHTLY OFF-KILTER tightrope, then down a boosted curl to the next checkpoint); then got a slightly bigger bike and slightly bigger NPCs and trees to drive around as he drove through the “head height windmill road” and into a series of pipes where he had to avoid yet more windmills (and discovered that Nick apparently had not put adequate anti-cheat measures into the board, allowing him to fly his bike across the board and into the pipe nearest the end); then upgraded to a car and a series of pipes where he had to jump through the thumbnail hole and ride up the ribbon to get to his destination (again, finding a way to cheat by just timing his jump off one intended upside-down wall ride so he just fell into the pipe that was closest to the end); then climbed the wall and upgraded to The Liberator monster truck to start driving over over-sized pieces of humanoid modern art (through one sculpture’s degraded buttcheeks, up another’s back and over his head and arm, over to a simple cylinder “tightrope” that was actually quite wide, then launch himself over to the road where he could leap through the two celebrating with a beer); and finally had to leap through a broken bridge through all the mega-monster-merged windmills, do a double “tire tightrope” (where he had to keep his tires carefully positioned on each shaft, because if any slipped into the middle, he was screwed) down the stems of two MORE windmills, before finally making up and over one more humanoid sculpture and to the finish line! Whew! Tough course, to be sure – good thing Gray has bucketloads of determination and a refusal to ever give up, huh? XD Expecting good things from you, Nicky!
4. Get my tumblr queues sorted: Check – went through my “fallout of darkness” tag on tumblr to find a Song Saturday reblog for Victor Luvs Alice for that verse that a) was fun and b) still worked (the videos on a few of them have gone walkabout). Settled on Panic! at the Disco and “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time,” which is now permanently mixed with that verse in my head given how hard I was listening to it during my first Fallout 4 runs. *nods* And after a queue speed reset back to one per day, we’re good for the rest of the week on that blog, yay!
So yeah, that's all set. I basically just need a better way to juggle all the various messages I answer at night. . .again, hopefully tomorrow will be better. As it stands right now, I gotta get to bed -- night all!
