Let's Dance
Sep. 11th, 2010 11:45 pmNot much to report on today -- I didn't even play Sims (we watched the last "Vicar of Dibley" episode and a retrospective at dinner, so I didn't get back to Chester the Laptop until 8:30, and then I felt it was just too late). So hey, let's have a story. Specifically, let's have the follow-up story to Surrendering:
26. Romance – They Won’t Say They’re In Love
“Hey, Jennifer, look! Victor got Alice out onto the dance floor!”
Jennifer looked over her shoulder. Sure enough, Alice was out there, leaning against Victor, her head pressed against his chest. “So he did,” she said. “I’m impressed. I didn’t think any of us would be able to tear her away from that wall.”
Marty nodded his agreement. “They look awfully happy together. Kinda weird to see Alice smile and not have it look psychotic.”
“Marty, that’s a terrible thing to say.”
“True, isn’t it?”
“That’s what makes it terrible!”
Marty shrugged and spun them around, glancing back at the other couple. “It is nice to see her looking honest to God happy,” he said. “Think they’re finally gonna kiss?”
“Pardon?” Jennifer repeated, surprised.
“Oh, come on, Jen! He’s been staring at her like she’s the best thing since sliced bread for ages now. And I’m almost positive she likes him back.”
Jennifer thought about that for a bit. To tell the truth, she’d seen Alice watching Victor quite a bit in their travels. He was always the first one she asked about after one of their battles. She always seemed to blush whenever he said the least positive thing about her. And she’d become rather more protective of him ever since Victoria had joined the group. Almost – almost as if she were jealous. Jennifer looked back at the couple. They were revolving slowly on the spot, arms tight around each other, looking more content than she’d ever seen them. “Marty, I do believe you have a point,” she admitted.
“Yeah, I figured,” Marty nodded, grinning. “So, think there’s a kiss in the near future?”
“Perhaps,” Jennifer shrugged. “I’m just thinking about how shy Victor is. His nerves might fail him.”
Marty stared at her, eyes wide. “You’re kidding,” he finally said. “You’re not saying he might be afraid of kissing?”
“Most people are a little nervous about it at first!” Jennifer tilted her head. “Weren’t you in the least bit worried when you kissed me? I might have woken up and slapped you.”
Marty looked at her, uncomprehending. “I was half-expecting that, to be honest,” he confessed. “I did kiss you when you were unconscious.”
Jennifer sighed and shook her head. “I keep forgetting you don’t feel like other people.”
Marty shook his head too, looking frustrated as he spun them around again. “Yeah. I gotta figure out what this fear thing is, and soon. It’s really annoying, not knowing why people do half the sh – hey! I think he’s going for it!”
Jennifer turned around. Victor and Alice were staring at each other, both of them blushing. As she watched, Victor began to lean down toward Alice, lips just beginning to purse. Jennifer smiled, feeling a nice warm glow. Oh, it was so nice to see another couple fall in –
The picture window on the far side of the ballroom suddenly shattered, ruining the mood. Everyone spun to see a snarling hellhound standing in the hole, froth dripping from its lips and eyes glowing red. Jennifer just barely bit back a scream, something most of the others were unable to do.
Marty slapped a hand to his head. “Ah, shit, they were that close! I was hoping the awkward ‘I like you a lot but I’m not going to say anything’ crap was over! Stupid dog!”
Jennifer gaped at him. “What?! That’s why you’re mad at this thing? Because it interrupted a kiss?!”
“Hey, given my choice between one of these things and those two constantly dancing around each other, I’ll take the hell beast! Hey, weapons guys! Where’s my sword?”
Yeah, so I decided that the dance gets interrupted at a crucial moment by one of the Terror Dogs from Ghostbusters. Aren't I nice?
-TTV: *rolls eyes*-
Yeah. Anyway, I think I covered most of the setting back in "Surrendering" -- grand ball that they're attending thanks to helpful Cheshire, part of Victoria's "Cinderella" arc, blah blah blah. I don't remember why I decided to write this one from Jennifer's perspective -- maybe because she doesn't get a lot of screentime in "The Tale" proper. I mean, I try to give her plenty of lines, and she does have one awesome moment so far, but there's no denying she's The Chick in the Five Man Band. I think I just wanted an outside perspective on the relationship, and Marty and Jennifer, being the official couple, seemed the right ones to give it.
Not too much trivia here -- Marty was fun to write in this one, what with his shock over someone possibly being afraid of "kissing." It's sort of amusing to write someone who doesn't have any idea what fear is. Also, this is wavering on the edge of being semi-canon -- the incident itself will still be occurring, it's just that Jennifer may be more aware of Alice's crush on Victor in the story itself. I just wrote a scene where Victoria and Jennifer ask Alice if she doesn't like her, and it seems to be trending toward the two realizing that Alice has a crush on Victor she can't vocalize.
-M2: Why doesn't she just come out with it and save us all the "will they, won't they?"-
Ahem -- "Everyone I love dies violently -- unnaturally. I'm cursed." You think "The Tale" Alice isn't going to believe this -- especially since she's lost not only her parents, but her grandmother too? She knows she ought to just tell Victor, but part of her is terrified this means that Victor will die.
-M2: *less convincingly* I would guess being Death's godson would help with that. . . .-
Trust me, it doesn't. You'll see.
Anyway, back to trivia -- I deliberately used a curse cut short near the end there, just because I thought it was funny. And, as stated, my idea for the look of the hellhound was that of a Terror Dog from Ghostbusters. Because let's face it, they're rather creepy.
And as for the title, it comes from Megara's song in Disney's Hercules: I Won't Say I'm In Love. I just altered it to refer to two people from an outsider's point of view, in keeping with the story. (Alert readers may remember that this song also happens to be on the Victor/Alice playlist, in terms of Alice trying to deny her crush)
Okay, and now it's time to answer another tag as Marty (he and Clark are still chatting) and perhaps visit the Sims Wikia.
