12 Days of Christmas: Day Nine

As promised, it's Victor kidfic for today's prompt:
“Victor! Don’t touch that!”
Victor’s hand froze inches away from the cinnamon stick. “But Mother, it s-smells so good,” he said quietly, looking longingly at the treat.
“That’s exactly why you can’t touch it,” Nell said, bustling over and frowning down at him. “It’s there for the scent, not for eating. It’s for our visitors to enjoy.”
“Oh, they will, dear,” William said approvingly, taking a good whiff. “You’ve really outdone yourself this year.”
Nell favored William with a smile. “Why thank you. I wanted to make sure everyone knew who could afford to spend Christmas in style.” She grinned around the large entrance hall. “Just think – our first Christmas in a mansion! We’ll be busy with guests up until the day itself! All your most important associates are coming, right?” she added.
“Every one,” William said, a proud smile under his mustache. “We’ll show them how well a fish merchant’s life can be, eh?”
“Oh William, don’t call yourself that,” Nell scolded, poking him lightly with her fan. “You’re a businessman, not some common storefront seller.”
“W-will some of these p-people have children?” Victor asked, his tone filled with commingled hope and worry.
“I hope not – children make such a mess,” Nell said. “Speaking of which, make extra sure to wipe your shoes before you come inside from now on. And if that mutt of yours tracks one bit of mud across my floors--”
Victor shrank back. “Y-yes, Mother,” he squeaked. “I’ll b-be good.”
“Good.” Nell bustled away, going on about how they’d have to have the perfect pastries ready for their guests, William following in her wake. Victor watched them go, then sighed.
Truth be told – he would have much preferred a quieter Christmas.
-M: So Nell can even make Christmas painful.-
-TTV: Not painful, precisely -- more overloaded.-
*nodnod* Yeah, this is the Christmas after Victor and his family moved into their mansion on the town square -- Victor's seven at this point. Nell is definitely going all-out to prove to everyone she can celebrate the most expensive Christmas in town. Unfortunately, as usual, she's not taking Victor's feelings into the matter.
-J2: *sarcasm dripping off the words* Love how she dashes his hopes about having other children to play with.-
-TTV: Actually, I have no idea if those children would have even wanted to play with me, so I can't feel too badly about that.-
Still. . . Anyway, just wanted to show you what a typical Christmas was like for the Van Dorts in Victor's childhood. Sorry to give you a potentially-depressing fic this time -- the sweetness and fluff should resume tomorrow.
In other news, the promised update on the Liddells of Inkwell Secundus! There's an interesting development in there, but I'm not going to spoil it -- go read. As it is, I have RPing to do -- joy, I get to see just how badly LJ's screwed up comment threads. >.< Seriously, LJ, why the hell did you feel the need to screw around with them? There was definitely not need to take away the subject titles. And when I hear people are getting migraines looking at your new layout. . .well. *shakehead* Suddenly I'm really glad I have an alternate source of RP on tumblr.
